Promise
Day by DaySun Jae needed to be fed every few hours, so during the night I would play with my phone while he ate. I liked to scroll through Jimin’s Instagram to look at all the cute pictures he posted of Haru.
Sun Jae’s cute little face appeared in one of the thumbnails. I clicked on it and a video began to play. In it, Sun Jae lay on his little playmat while Jimin softly sang a lullaby in the background. I pressed the heart button with my thumb, a small smile on my face.
Jimin was an excellent father. I never regretted having children with him, no matter what happened between us. I knew they would always be loved and cared for.
I scrolled through the rest of the photos, some from weeks ago. An old picture of Jin and Jimin grinning at the camera made me frown in thought. I didn’t know how things were between them; Jimin hadn’t mentioned Jin except to accuse me of being in love with him.
“Hey, baby.” Jimin stood in the hallway, yawning and rubbing the sleep out of his eyes.
“Jimin, it’s two in the morning. Go back to sleep.”
He ignored me and plopped onto the couch to rest his head on my shoulder.
“Sun Jae is just so cute. I just wanna be awake with him all the time.”
“Get some s. Then you can feed him and I can sleep.” I laughed. Jimin chuckled softly and kissed my ear.
“You’re amazing.” Jimin whispered, nibbling at my earlobe. “The best mama ever.”
I snorted. “Hardly.”
Jimin kissed my neck and shoulder while I continued to creep on his Insta. A very adorable picture of us from 63 weeks ago hadn’t been liked by me, so I fixed that.
“What are you doing?” Jimin poked his nose into my business. “Is that my Instagram?”
“Yeah.” I admitted sheepishly. “I creep on you while I feed Sun Jae.”
“I’ll have to be more active.”
“Hey, Jimin?”
He kissed my cheek. “Yes?”
“Are you still…are you still mad at Jin?” I asked hesitantly.
Jimin paused, then wrapped his arms around me. “Well…he’s got it bad for you, little wife of mine. I know I told him to confess, but I thought he would do it and then step back. I thought it would be part of an effort to get over you, not to take you away from me.”
“Jimin, he hasn’t tried anything with me. I would have told you if he did.”
“Would you?” Jimin asked in surprise.
“Yeah, better than you finding out later! Could you imagine? You’d probably feel so betrayed and suspicious.”
“Yeah, I would.” He said thoughtfully. “He said something to me, though. He found out we were separated, sorry. I had to say it so we wouldn’t have to film a reality television show, hope you understand.”
“Wait, what?” I held up a hand. “We could have filmed a reality tv show?”
“Uh, yeah.” Jimin cocked his head, puzzled. “I don’t know how you feel about that.”
“Can we still film it?”
“Um…I don’t know.” He said slowly. “But, I don’t want to?”
“Oh.” My shoulders slumped in disappointment. “Why not? It sounds hella cool. I could be famous.”
“It’s not that great.” He told me. “Privacy is nice.”
“Shut up, you dumb celebrity.” I pouted at him. Jimin grinned and kissed me.
“You’re famous in my heart.”
I rolled my eyes and sighed. “So corny. God, you’re such a dad!”
“You love me.” He puckered his lips and I pushed him away, giggling.
“Anyway, Jin said that it seemed like too much of a coincidence that you’d asked me for a separation at the same time he confessed. Said maybe you wanted to be with him, because he was less drama.”
“I mean…maybe if Jin had an like yours.” I pretended to deliberate. “Maybe I would leave you for him then.”
“Okay, seriously, you.” Jimin laughed. “You can’t joke about that anymore. You can’t leave me. You’re not allowed.”
Sun Jae pulled off of me and I tugged my shirt back down. He snuggled up against me and grabbed onto my finger with his entire hand.
“I can’t get over how tiny he is.” I murmured.
“He’s gotten so big compared to last week.” Jimin said softly. “Our little boy is growing up so fast.” He wiped a fake tear from his eye.
“Shut up.” I giggled. “You corny dad.”
Jimin took Sun Jae from my arms and cradled him against his chest, shushing him softly.
“Do you want a snack?” I stood and made my way over to the kitchen.
“You’re gonna get fat.” He warned. “If you snack at night.”
I threw a spoon at him.
“Ouch!” He glared at me. “You could have hit the baby!”
“I’ll get fat if I wanna get fat.” I defiantly another spoon into a gallon of almond milk ice cream.
Jimin shrugged. “Be my guest. Just watch your health.”
“You want some?” I sat down on the couch next to him. He opened his mouth like a little baby bird, so I fed him a spoonful.
Sun Jae eventually fell asleep in Jimin’s arms. He kissed the top of his head, then asked me a quiet question.
“Are we still separated?”
I spooned another mouthful of ice cream into his sad little pouty mouth. He swallowed, then leaned in and nudged my nose with his.
“I just really wanna be with you.” I said softly. “Even if it makes me sad.”
“I don’t want you to be sad.” Jimin whispered, his mouth against mine. “I want to make you happy.”
“Okay.” I kissed him. “Hit me with your best shot.”
Jimin smiled against my mouth. “You’re gonna be so damn happy the sun’s gonna shine outta your .”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
