appearAnce.

— Standing at a modest height of 163cm, Lian often refers to herself as fun sized. Due to her strict training regimen, she weighs 48 kg and has a flat abdomen. Her body is proportioned well. She has medium to long hair, naturally black. She has dyed this blonde multiple times. She often wears her hair in a neat ponytail during practice and normally has it down. Lian only has two piercings—one in each ear—in fear that her mom might faint if she sees more than one piercing in her daughter’s ear.

fashIOn stYle.

— Feminine, but with neutral tones and a monochromatic palette. Her casual style can be described as smart chic, mixed with pretty lace patterns and flowy fabrics. Lian always shows off her best features, not minding if she’ll end up showing off a little skin. She keeps this color scheme and style philosophy in the practice room with a ton of crop tops, baggy pants, and plain tees. Although her wardrobe might be devoid of color, Lian knows she’s always wearing a smile anyway. That’s enough to brighten up the room.

pErsoNAlity.

(+) outgoing, bubbly, observant, optimistic
(-) talkative, an overthinker, indecisive, emotional

If there is one thing Lian loves more than music, it’s people. Meeting, seeing, and especially, talking to people. It doesn’t surprise her much now when people tell her that she’s probably the most outgoing person they’ve ever met—and for that, Lian is incredibly proud. She’s a great conversationalist, and almost always knows what to say in any given situation, even with a language barrier. Lian is never afraid to take initiative in things that she’s absolutely passionate about. She interacts with the fans first, with the other trainees first, and with the hidden cameras & staff of the show first. Bright and bubbly, Lian’s biggest weapon aside from her skills on the stage is her smile and aura of cheerfulness. She likes appearing that way because she knows she can make others feel happy too. Even on her not-so-happy days.

Obviously, Lian likes to have fun with her friends, old and new. She mixes a little of that fun in her work, too, but not to the extent that it’s disruptive. In fact, Lian remains observant. She makes sure she still focuses on the task at hand and is quick to find details that are wrong or that can be improved. She is also observant when it comes to people. New hairdo? New shoes? New habit? Lian always finds an opportunity to bring it up. With this talent, she makes sure to respect other people’s boundaries, and to gauge other people’s emotions to know how to act around them. In work, this observational skill often provides her a way to contribute her own ideas to improve, encourage, or even change things she’s seen. Coupled with her good speaking skills, Lian is able to get her point across without offending anybody.

As a true wordsmith, Lian shows she cares through words of encouragement. She believes in people as much as she loves them and supports them, even in their downfall. To those who need it, Lian provides her positive outlook on life. As she says, it’s hard to survive in the idol world without it. She takes criticism and tries to look at it as a step to becoming better. She often offers to distract her friends from being sad by just listening to her talk with her boundless optimism. However, for many people, Lian can prove to be quite a handful. For others who want peace & quiet in their lives, Lian might be a nightmare to be with. When she’s completely into a conversation, she doesn’t have much regard for anybody outside of it. She’s been scolded often due to being too loud with her friends, or even with just her louder-than-normal speaking voice.

Unknown to some, there are a lot of things that keep Lian up at night. She overthinks the reasons behind her friends’ actions, the decisions she has made throughout the day, or even decisions she’s made years ago. Due to this, she tends to be indecisive at even the simplest of decisions, like deciding what to eat. She ends up relying on others that are surer of themselves to decide on important matters and sees her own opinion as only secondary to others’. Although often in high spirits, in times of great stress, Lian is prone to breaking down and being overly emotional. She knows how to cry too. Lian doesn’t want to show that part of herself to people who rely on her as she knows how much it could affect them. To the people that she loves, she always wants to be a beacon of hope. The sun, if you will. And if her smile can’t touch people’s hearts in times of sadness, Lian knows that her songs will.

bAckground.

Born and raised in a Filipino-Chinese family of musicians, Lian has been playing the piano since age 5. Her father was a pianist turned businessman selling instruments, and her mother was a music teacher. Their household was rarely quiet—with her grandmother, her parents, & her two older siblings in one household.

Lian fell in love with the piano due to her father. On days her father sticks around enough to see her get home from piano classes on Saturdays, he plays nursery rhymes and classical pieces with her, as a way of showing his daughter that he loved her. That transitioned into singing soon enough, with her mother’s influences. At the time, her mother became infatuated with BoA. Lian’s discovery of BoA led her to start singing seriously, as if her life depended on it. Lian started singing lessons with her mother at age 7. At age 11, Lian was already joining singing competitions while still playing piano on the side. Her parents were always very supportive, no matter what the outcome of her contests were.

Stars seemed to align for Lian soon enough as BoA’s first solo concert in South Korea happened in January 2013. Lian was there to finally see her idol, along with her mother and older sister, who managed to secure a job in South Korea. The concert made Lian really realize what she wanted to do in life. Encouraged by her mother and the rest of her family, Lian stayed with her older sister in South Korea since then. She started attending Seoul Foreign School in Seoul in March of that year. In 2015, Lian auditioned for DSP Media. She moved into the trainee dorms later that year, moving in with Kiyeon.

Tragedy struck when Lian’s father died in 2016 from a brain aneurysm. With that and the stress of juggling school & training, Lian was in the dumps. Lian stopped playing the piano for a while, and even stopped singing. Being with her fellow trainees who continued to work hard despite their own hardships, especially Kiyeon who treated her like her own family, Lian became inspired again and began working as hard as ever. She thought that her father would not have liked to see her stop doing what she loved.

best friend | Bang Kiyeon / born 1995 / DSP Media & Produce 101 trainee / Chu Sojung (Exy) / 10/10

To Lian, Kiyeon was probably her first friend at the company. When you live with someone, it’s hard to not get close with them, especially if both of you are extroverted. That’s the case for both Lian and Kiyeon. It was mostly Kiyeon who helped Lian get over her slump when they were trainees. Through that, they got very close. They know how to have fun together, how to make others laugh together, and how to work together, often asking each other for advice on improving their skills & collaborating. They fill each other’s gaps—Kiyeon’s the type to make decisions when Lian can’t, and Lian always supports Kiyeon through tough times and makes sure she doesn’t feel alone.

friend | Ho Yonghwan / born 1998 / DSP Media & Produce 101 trainee / Kang Hyunggu (Kino) / 8/10

One of Lian’s most unlikely friends is Yonghwan, who normally keeps to himself in his time away from training. Somehow, they got close by sharing their love for music—Lian with piano, and Yonghwan with composing over-all. Lian is always thankful for Yonghwan’s ideas and his surprising kindness to her, looking out for her and helping her to the best of his ability. Although he may be emotionally constipated at times, Lian always values his inputs. His endless talent is what Lian admires most about him. To Lian, he’s someone she wants to learn a lot from.

— friend | Murakawa Eiji / born 2000 / DSP Media & Produce 101 trainee /  Yoon Sanha / 7/10

Eiji and Lian are partners-in-crime: Eiji loves having fun more than anything, while Lian’s just game enough for anything Eiji has under his sleeve. As both foreigners looking for a big break in a foreign country, they’ve learned to empathize with each other. They rarely have serious moments together, but when they do, Lian is always the one to take the lead. She cares for him like an older sister would, and only wants the best for him.

STAGEname. Lian (리안) | It's simply the nickname she likes being called as.
PLOTLINE. Vocal
TALENT TWIN. Ex-PRISTIN member Bae Sungyeon
COMPANY NAME. DSP Media

TRAINEE YEARS.

— 4 years, 2 months

TRAINEE BACKGROUND.

— Lian entered DSP Media in 2015, through their open audition. Trainee life was very interesting to Lian who formerly didn't have to compete with other kids when she was being trained in singing or dancing.  She also had the disadvantage of not knowing how to speak Korean. But she simply did the best she could. She acknowledged the fact that she wasn't the best at what she does;  it's what she can do and how she does it that matters. Throughout her trainee life, she focused on improving her dancing skills as she was lacking, but also explored with what she can do with her vocals. She talked to others often to improve her Korean, and is well-liked by her teachers at the company due to her sheer want of learning the language. Lian made friends with almost all of the trainees, with Kiyeon being her closest friend.

With Lian's father's death in 2016, Lian became uninspired. She didn't feel like practicing as she did before, and even almost got cut from the company. But with the help of her friends, she managed. Lian wants to help other people get through tough times just like how her fellow trainees did for her. This is what she wants to do for the viewers of Produce too.

Previous experience. Lian has collaborated with fellow DSP Media trainee Yonghwan for the song "Lonely".

AUDITION TAPE.

Introduce yourself.

— Lian smiles at the interviewer and bows politely. “Hello, everyone! I’m the 20-year old living battery of DSP Media, Go Lian! It’s nice to meet you all.”

Why did you choose produce 101?

— “Oh,” Lian laughs softly, “I guess I didn’t really choose it. It’s more like it chose me. But I think the reason why I’m here to represent my company is to share what I have with the National Producers.” She nods. A thoughtful smile appears on her face. “I want to make them happy, to inspire them.”

Are you confident in yourself?

— “Of course! Although I always think there are things that can still be improved.” Lian grins.

What if produce 101 have a new concept? Would you still want to join?

—“A new concept, huh?” Lian pretends to think for a while, crossing her arms for added effect. She then looks at the interviewer straight in the eye and flashes a smile. “Why not?”

What is your specialty?

— “My specialty, as I hope you can see already, is being bright. Like a source of energy. A battery.” Lian resists the urge to break out into song. “I’m confident that people can find energy from my voice too.”

What is your hope and goal?

— “Ah, I think I’m similar to a lot of people. To debut is the main goal here, isn’t it?” She asks to no one. “Other than that, my goal is to let the National Producers know that they can rely on me to give them hope.”

What song did you choose for your first evaluation performance?

— Lian immediately beams brightly, eyes sparkling. “My fellow DSP Media trainees and I will be performing KARD-sunbaenim’s Hola Hola. {Somin: Lian, Jiwoo: Kiyeon, BM: Hwanho, J.Seph: Eiji}

comments. 1/4 of the crackheads trainees of DSP Media. I hope you like Lian and her energy! She'll be eager to make friends with everyone.
password. DSP kids have to stick together; Lian sits at 65! Kiyeon is next to her at 64, Yonghwan at 63, and Eiji at 62.
suggestions/ideas.

— Lian getting scolded due to being too loud. She'll probably still talk to other people even if they're something else going on. Or to the cameras.
— A sports festival! Lian's bound to do very badly and is seen hiding from the cameras in fear of being seen with her bad running. It'll be fun (and funny) for everyone.
— Lian volunteering to translate for the Chinese / English-speaking trainees when they are in a team with her. It's been a while since she's met people who can speak her language. She'd want to befriend them.

Finished reading . I must say that Lian really won my heart; I really love her character.
Hwanho is amazing! You elaborated everything really well, and I can understand both of the characters.
I fell like Hwanho would be so close with my character, Ryuu Tatsuya. Ah, I have so many ideas for them now.

Also, are you going to apply more? (I mean, I would love to read them too!)

And yes, Lian and Hwanho are accepted! <3
