IN SUMMARY
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in january? No surprises; I stick to what I know.
What's your own favorite story of the year? I really enjoyed a will is a dead giveaway.
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the new year? I still just want to write more. If I can successfully produce a sequel to one of my stories, or if I can totally revamp a story into something I really really like, I'll consider it a successful writing year.
From my past year of writing, what was ... ?
My best story of this year: I think I did well with I Should/Could/Would [Not] Never Love You for No Happy Ending fest. It wasn't my usual genre or ending at all. Everything about it was outside my usual and what I've become comfortable with. I think I fulfilled the prompt in as graceful a way as I could at the time, keeping the characters very human when they could easily be reduced to far away nightmares.
My most popular story of this year: Snakes Will Always Bite Back (At School, aka chapter two, published three years after the first chapter), followed by Strangers on the Train, Friends on the Sidewalk, written for B&E
The story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: I dunno. After so long, I don't even remember what I've written, so I guess all of them, since even I can't seem to appreciate them. orz
The most fun story to write: a most undesirable sentiment was fun in that I enjoyed writing such a twist. I had a lot of ideas of how to write the story, but I think what I ended up with was best, and it was fun to work up to the twist and try to create an unassuming but still suggestive atmosphere.
The story with the single iest moment: I guess to be alive and to live freely or birthday moon, for the kisses. It's been years, and I still have never done much for rated fic. Not my department.
The most "holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: Still haven't reached this point. I honestly don't think I ever will.
The story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: In fics like deep unconscious & second skin and a most undesirable sentiment, protagonists have gone to the extreme to hide certain personal qualities. They didn't shift my perceptions of the characters at all, but they were roles I had to think more about. Their motivations were more important to the direction of the plot than if I was writing a piece of fluff.
The hardest story to write: Very easily I Should/Could/Would [Not] Never Love You for No Happy Ending fest. I liked the prompt in that it was morbidly interesting, and it is something some people unfortunately deal with. Being step-relatives, there's no shared blood, but they're still relatives, and society has rules for relatives. And finding out that someone you've grown up with and love is capable of such twisted mentality can really hurt, especially when you are the focus of that twisted mentality, whether in love or hate.
The biggest disappointment: harmless in its quiet seemed to get no acknowledgement at all. It's written for Keudifictionery, and usually fests are a way to attract readers, because they're sort of advertised. Maybe because it was a rare pair (Kris and Kyungsoo) or maybe it was just a poor story... There's no comments, anyway. I thought it was a pretty okay story, at least. Same with Wedding Bells will Soon be Ringing. I know genderbend isn't everyone's scene, and fics without actual pairings don't seem to do as well. Still thought it was pretty okay.
The biggest surprise: It's kind of not a surprise, considering how big the fest is and how popular the ChanBaek pairing is, but Strangers on the Train, Friends on the Sidewalk, for B&E, got a lot of readers and comments. Just goes to show if you want to be noticed, in anything, go with something known and popular.
The most unintentionally telling story: I don't think there is one. Some stories get kind of preachy, like when animals are involved, but that's not unintentionally telling anything. That's all intentional.
Favorite opening lines:
Kyungsoo, being Kyungsoo, is practical.
The problem with drinking too much is the morning after. Some people drink more to chase away the inevitable. Others have pills or folk remedies. Still others responsibly eat and drink water while indulging.
Chanyeol is one of those blessed individuals who sleep and wake up perfectly refreshed.
Kyungsoo is one of those cursed to be miserable, responsibility and caution be damned.

In a society that thrives on magic and power, Jongin feels that he has neither. As a wolf, he has the innate ability to change form to human and back, but that’s not real magic.

Standing on the front lawn, frowning at the closed trunk of a little blue sedan, Joonmyun crosses his arms over his chest and verbally checks his mental list. “Bed sheets are already at the apartment; the rest of the clothes you’re taking are packed here; you have toothbrush, mouthwash, cleaning supplies… Where’s your purse?” His daughter holds up her arm, brandishing the Molang clutch hanging from a strap on her wrist. Joonmyun nods and takes takes her shoulders. “Are you sure you don’t want us to come with?”
Jaeeun mimics his tone, crossing her arms over his to take his shoulders. “Positive.” She smiles shakes her head. “Papa...you and Baba helped me find a place, deal with the papers, move in, and are even paying for it until I get a job—you deserve a break, so just relax!”
“I’m a dad, honey. We don’t get breaks. I’ll relax when I’m dead.”
“You’ll still be stiff when you’re dead.” She bites her lips at her joke; Joonmyun rolls his eyes but smiles.

It’s a lovely day, clear and unseasonably warm. Birds are screaming; tree squirrels are obsessively hoarding nuts; bugs are enjoying the heated earth when they should probably be hibernating… It’s a lovely day to be a carefree dog.

"She is not a pizza!" If Taehyung was a pizza, he'd be a stuffed crust meat lover's with extra cheese and banana peppers with ranch dressing to dip in. If Yoona was a pizza ... he doesn't know. And it's not relevant.
"Like you'd complain if she arrived hot and ready to your door." Still not relevant. Taehyung refuses to think about it. Absolutely refuses.

Baekhee is beside herself when Junghae tells her about the unexpected prom plans in person after school. Kyungsoon tries to smother her with a pillow, but Baekhee is very good at controlling her breathing and doesn’t pass out.
Tea is livelier than sitting in the men's lounge. Women, he's found, no matter the age, love to talk, and they don't even have to know what they're talking about; they'll still talk animatedly. Baekhyun likes it. Some of his fondest boyhood memories are of having tea with his mother and her friends. He'd play piano, and they'd all smile and praise him and congratulate Mrs. Byun on such a talented son.
He misses that.
He could fall asleep like this, right in front of a complete stranger. Who knows how he'd wake up, then, if he'd even wake up at all. If his room would be trashed or property stolen. Jongin could be hidden anywhere among the ship's ten decks or sitting across from him, sketching while he slept.
“I admit, I'm kind of into those turtles.”
“Really. The turtles.”
“The turtle is a sacred figure in Native American symbolism, representing Mother Earth. They're also a key member of the ecosystem, so it's like hosting a superstar of nature.” He drops a bit of rice on his shirt and picks it up with his fingers. “Plus, did you notice they were smiling? They're really cute!” Seokjin hadn't; he was being an attentive guest and focusing on his host. Who's also very cute.
“I can give you his number, if you want to negotiate a turtle deal.”
“I dunno,” Namjoon sighs. “Do I really have the time to dedicate to them? Can I afford their care and raise them to meet their full turtle potential?”
Seokjin lets him philosophize and eats in silence.

fic writing goals for 2019: Write more outside of fests!!! Challenges or the pairing weeks are acceptable, I think, but just something more for myself and for the fun of it is a good goal for me, I think.
