→ adopted baby to korean-american parents
→ was born in korean and moved to new york city at the age of 6, where she lived for nine years.
→ one of her parents got a job offer in Jeju, so when she was 15, she had to move back there with her family. Moving back was so difficult because up until this point, her family only spoke in english and she didn’t know much about her korean heritage besides the basics. Being in a new country was so difficult and she felt lost at school. Her new high school made her repeat a grade because of her struggling with the korean language.
→ feeling very alone and ostracized by her classmates, hazel turned to streaming under her english name as a way to have people to congregate with. She went by Haseul at school and in public, so there was no way anyone could make the connection to her irl, and she felt safe. She would play games, watch videos, or whatever her followers suggested and had a lot of fun. Her streaming was entirely in english, and she never gave away her location, so she felt more connected to her home in new york.
→ hazel never imagined she would get so famous on twitch, the streaming platform she used, but she blew up. She wasn’t the most famous, or even close, but she had a pretty generous following that kept her going.
→ in seoul, hazel was bothered by some of the more conserved concepts of korean culture. Women were not treated equally here, and were expected to keep their heads down. Lots of general rules were confusing and she didn’t like it compared to the liberation of America.
→ because of the strange conservation of korea, hazel doubled down on learning korean history and politics. She focused on protests, even attending a few herself to express her opinions and beliefs. It only seemed natural for her to major in political science so maybe, one day, she could make a difference in korea.
