Journal Entry 9

So today I was having dinner with one of my dance friends after dance practice, and our conversation made me think a lot about myself as a dancer and the path I want to take in the future.

Firstly, I've seen and I know that some people dance and choreograph just for the sake of impressing other and looking cool. But as I learned from my process of choreographing, coming up with a routine takes much more than that. Every good dance number has a story behind it --- or at least something the choreographer is trying to convey. Therefore the piece that he/she creates is not merely a series of complicated movements crammed together forcefully but rather a way of expressing thoughts and emotions that are hard to put into words. I know I still am a rookie at choreographing, but I defintely aim to become a choreographer like that.

Second thing that I thought about is he importance of practicing. This applies to practically everything in life, but it is especially apparent while dealing with any for of the arts. I really don't understand how people can think that they can just magically pull out spectacular moves without practicing it over and over before, nor could I understand people whining as they complain about how hard a step is and then expect to master it without putting effort in. Everything done perfectly takes enormous amount of practicing beforehand, and I fully aknowledge the importance of practicing and pushing myself to improve.

I feel like dancing has taught me some of the most important things in life and I can't appreciate it more.
