she dont really like talking to strangers, shes not the shy and quiet type, neither is she the cool and mysterious type, shes just kind of a socially awkward person. she doesnt start conversations with other people, and she hardly have any close friends on land since she takes a long time to warm up to new people. she hates it when people thank or compliment her, because she would feel awkward and doesnt know how to react or reply.
she hardly speaks, but when she does, its something with impact. she doesnt repeat or say something that she deemed as not needed. she is a very smart and sharp child, she is able to rebut whatever you just said as soon as you finished your sentence. the only times shes not socially awkward is either shes really close with that person, or when shes arguing with that person. even though shes quiet, her brain is always busy. she judges people a lot, even though its only a moment of judging. for example she would judge someone based on something she just saw them wearing/saying/doing, but that wouldnt make her hate or judge them forever.

background — the family used to sell bing su in north korea. due to the cold war, the family escaped with some of their neighbours and friends onto a ship to seek shelter. in order to survive on the sea, they turned the ship into a pirate ship and began robbing other ships that were passing by. it was later decided that they need a captain, after some votings, her grandfather was chosen as the best choice. they then named the ship "bingsu".
her father grew up on the ship, and married a beautiful young lady who also grew up on the ship. they gave birth to a beautiful baby girl on the japan sea on december 14, naming her seo joo hae.
the girl grew up together with another girl, min ji yeon, who had the same age as her. the two girls became really good friends and they would do everything together. when they were 10, a new boy, a year older, was added into the pirate crew. according to her grandfather, it was because the boy's father was unale to pay up for the huge amount of money he owed him, the irresponsible father then decided to sell his son to her grandfather in order to pay off his debts. therefore the boy was brought to the ship to help out with the chores.
he blend in well with both the kids and the adults, her grandfather like to say hes his favourite crew. the boy is able to do well in almost everything and is hardly afraid of anything, which gained favourism from adults. he also act as an older brother to the two kids, telling them stories about land. the two girls love to follow him around, joo hae always dream about being on land and wants to know more, also, both the girls have a crush on the new boy.
three years later, their grandfather died, and their father became the new captain of "bingsu". he then decided to expand their pirate career by sending the new boy to south korea as a "spy", wanting him to find out when big ships are coming, and they will wait there for the ship to come, so that they don't have to wait and search for ships, to make their job easier and to earn more money. while the people were all busy preparing to send the boy to land, joo hae managed to sneaked into the tiny boat to hide (with all her determination and courage to visit land). unknown to them all, when the boy set off from the ship, he was bringing along joo hae too.
joo hae was really excited to leave the ship and step on land the first time. when the boy found out that she tagged along, he wanted to take her back to the ship, but she quickly escaped and went off to explore the whole new world by herself. while running away from the boy, she took shelter in a tiny clinic. the doctor thought that she was in need of immediate help because she was panting heavily when she rushed in. he wanted to conduct some check-ups for her, but of course she declined. however due to his insistence, the check-ups were still conducted, he then realised that she was a very healthy girl.
they had a little conversation and he found out that shes a north korean. although shocked, he was eager to help her, because his grandfather was a north korean too, and due to the countrys seperation, his father and grandfather were unable to meet for all these years. he knew that his father yearned to meet his grandfather again. he assumed that the girl escaped from north korea to visit her seperated family members too, and he promised her to help her find her family. he also offered her to stay with him and his family before she find her family. 
in order to protect joo haes north korean identity, the man suggested that she live her life as his son. his son is sickly ever since young, and he had never left his house before, therefore its okay for her to live as him outside of the house. she was entitled to his birth certificate, identity card etc. they happened to be born on the same year as well. the man helped her cut her hair and taught her how to act like a boy.
when her father found out that his daughter escaped, he was furious and sent his men to get her back. however, it was all failed attempts. all thanks to that uncle she happened to met, they were unable to get hold of her exact location. she now live as someone totally new to her, although shes sorry for taking his identity, she knew she needed it.

Entertainment Background — joo hae auditioned and joined top entertainment using ri hwans identity after watching music shows on the television. she was going to debut as the maknae and main vocal of teen top after training for 14 months, but somehow rihwans condition was found out by the entertainment. she never knew how it got out, by who and why, but it killed her stardom life before it even officially started. top entertainment didnt want to debut an idol like a time bomb. they dont even know when she cant perform anymore, therefore they had no choice but to let her go.

First meeting — they first met when she was still a female. he first saw her in the clinic when she was helping out rihwan's father with the simple chores in the clinic. for some reason (depending on the guy's personality), they interacted with each other for a few minutes. he was the first guy she got to interact with after she got down the ship (except for rihwan's father that is).
although they only exchanged a few words, he made an impression. after joo hae turned into a guy and became a trainee in sc, she met him again. at first she would ran away every time she sees him, because she was afraid that he might regconise her, and if he did, her secret might be revealed. but after realising that he doesnt remember her, she was half happy, and half disappointed.

relationship/interactions — at first she would deny the fact that she likes him, because she believed that she likes chanyoung. but she would always secretly get jealous when he get too close with any other girls (like his love interest). as time passes by, shell realise that she actually like him and not chanyoung. after some encouragement from her friend in flair, she would start to try and get his attention. she would try to flirt with him but itll just end up awkward for her or she just cant bring herself to do it. she even thought of telling him that shes a female, but she didnt in the end. she would also ask him for lessons (depending on what he's good in), just so that she can spend more time with him (probably taught by her friend in flair)
and then when things progressed between him and his love interest, and when rumors spread about her and her friend in flair dating, things just got really complicated that it's hard to explain to him or to let him know her feelings.
