character history

Even at a young age, Hanjoo had always realized that her father had never wanted her; if he had, he would've not left her and her mother in the first place. So when she stood in front of her father’s mansion door after her mother’s death, she expected nothing from him. And when her father and his new family treated her like a stranger, she had been prepared for that. She was grateful enough that her father still provided her with comfortable living environment and paid for her education. So if acting as if she was invisible was what he wanted from her, she figured she could do just that. Hanjoo stayed in her room or outside of the house as much as possible, busying herself with books and more books, and talking only to Mr. Lee, the family’s butler. When she was accepted to study at KAIST, Hanjoo was more excited by the fact that she was able to get out of the house, and she was sure that he father was, too. She knew that he didn’t care the least bit of what she was doing in college and after, but it wasn’t like she could really complain, he still paid for it anyway.

~o~

Luhan was in the middle of having a headache from spying on too many people’s minds when he laid eyes on Hanjoo, and he wasted no time in approaching her. However, persuading the stoic-faced girl turned out to be a harder work than what he had expected, and it kinda irked him. Luhan had planned that he only needed a day, but instead it took him three days to convince Hanjoo to go with him. The first leading him into having a door slammed in front of his face, the second involved so many unvoiced thoughts and questions that he had to answer, which led into him having to chase a horrified Hanjoo all the way across campus to her dorm only to have a door slammed in front of his face, again. The third, though, was pretty easy. Hanjoo was starting to believe that he, in fact, was really an angel with a telepathy power, but she was still skeptical as to why he chose her to be his successor (and thankfully, this time she verbalized that thought).

“Why me?”
“Because you’re smart.”
“If you’re looking for smart, the guys from Engineering are freaking geniuses.”
“But they all have something binding them on earth, unlike you.”

Luhan deserved to be smug because he knew he hit the nail right on the head, but he couldn’t help but feel bad for Hanjoo. Her face instantly turned dark at his words, and he saw her thinking about her uncaring father and his family, and all the people she couldn’t even call her friends. Even with Hanjoo’s silence he saw the microsecond flash of determination in her eyes, and Luhan knew he had won. But then Hanjoo hesitated, remembering her dream of becoming a scientist, at which Luhan only chuckled and responded, “if you go with me, you’ll be able to make scientists”. Upon hearing those words, Hanjoo’s stone-like expression was somehow lit by a newfound excitement, and she finally agreed to come with him—but not before making him solve a silent, extremely advanced math problem as a condition.

character personality

Hanjoo is that one student that comes to the class, sits in the very front row, and leaves as soon as the class gets dismissed. No one really know much about her, besides that she’s the smartest student in the faculty and the biggest nerd one has ever spoken to. Hanjoo is respected by her fellow students and professors because of her knowledgability, but despite her reputation she doesn’t really have friends. Her nerdiness maybe one of the reasons why, along with her reserved and introverted attitude. In addition, Hanjoo has a stoic and stolid expression that makes her seem to be a cold and inapproachable person, making her fellow students reluctant to get close to her.

Hanjoo doesn’t talk much, but when the topic of science and superheroes (especially x-men) come up, she does. Hanjoo will only answer you with a nod or shake of the head (a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ if you’re lucky) when you ask her a general question, but try and ask her about the origin of the Wolverine, then she will blabber on and on and on until you couldn’t take it anymore and leave. Hanjoo doesn’t say much and is usually passive in conversations, but she listens well and when she catches even the smallest misinformation, she won’t let it pass without correction.  Hanjoo is always curious, but she rarely asks questions. She prefers to absorb information through observations or literary researches, and let me tell you, she’s extremely good at that. Hanjoo is also stubborn and persistent with her opinions, and she hates to lose in an argument (not that winning over her is easy to begin with).

Having seen her mother’s experience with her father, Hanjoo has always been skeptical towards people. She finds it hard to be comfortable around anyone, let alone trust them. When she first enters a new group of people, for sometimes she will just stay in the background, giving minimum contributions and quietly judging observing everyone, until she feels comfortable to open up. And when she decides it is safe to trust someone, she will trust the wholeheartedly. Hanjoo may appear emotionless and uninterested, but inside, she has a kind soul. Hanjoo isn’t good at expressing herself, but has her own subtle, silent ways to express her care and affection. This side of her is often left unnoticed, but if you look a little bit closer, you’ll find that she’s actually not that cold at all.

PERSONALITY.
Luhan is the epitome of the saying ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’. With an angelic yet mysterious appearance, one would think of him as a sweet, romantic guy or a calm and cool guy who makes all the girls scream ‘senpai, notice me’. HA. Ladies and gentlemen, do not let what’s outside fool you. Behind the beautiful visage is a shrewd, scheming guy who has a thousand tricks to get what he wants. As the guardian of the minds, Luhan has the privilege of accessing other people’s deepest thoughts and secrets, and he makes sure to make full use of it. Luhan is clever and tactful, and his ability in reading people’s mind only adds up to his advantage to get things done just by blackmailing bribing talking people into doing them. Luhan, despite his age, likes joking around, pulling pranks, and playing with other people’s minds (literally). The three beagles might be well known as the pranksters, but where do you think they got their evil ideas from?

Now I may have been giving out the idea that Luhan is a selfish, good-for-nothing kid that only does what he wants (Hanjoo: which he is), but he really isn’t. Setting aside his cunningness and rather prickly attitude, Luhan is actually a thoughtful hyung who cares a lot of his dongsaengs’ well-being. Though Joonmyun is the (somewhat) leader and Minseok is the respected eldest hyung, Luhan is the one the guardians turn to when they’re troubled and need a listening ear, because he always says the right thing at the right time. Luhan is also heedful and very protective towards his friends, always keeping them in check and being there when they need him even before they ask.

When it comes to his work, Luhan is all business and no joking around. Well, he has to be, since as the guardian of the mind, his job is one of the most important. Luhan is hardworking and attentive to details, and he is someone that sees the end of what he started. Luhan’s way of working is systematic and organized, and he likes to makes sure that everything always goes according to plan. Even though most of the time he’s insolent and insufferable, his friends admit that this ‘guardian of the mind’ side of Luhan is pretty cool.

MEETING.
Hanjoo and Luhan’s first meeting was pretty simple: she was walking back from a class when Luhan popped out of nowhere in front of her with a blank face, almost making her smash him with her macbook and ruin the beautiful laptop.

“You are Song Hanjoo, 21 years old, third year student of Physics department, roommate of Kim Saemi, dormitory E8 room 220.”
“…And you’re weird.”
“My name is Luhan-”
“Like I care. Now go away or-”
“-and I’m here to take you with me.”
“-what?”

Yup. It was pretty simple.
Hanjoo was pretty sure she never had a stalker—heck, no one had ever bothered to talk to her, let alone stalk—so meeting Luhan was kind of creepy. But when Luhan introduced himself once again, and this time mentioning about him being a guardian from heaven, Hanjoo couldn’t help the scoff that escaped her lips. To say that Hanjoo thought Luhan was weird was a polite fabrication; she thought he was downright psychotic. So she just rolled her eyes and walked away, saying that she was busy and had no time for weirdos. But Luhan followed her while still trying to explain himself. He told her about the guardians what they did, but she just kept walking faster, only once in a while sparing him glances of disbelief. Luhan trailed after Hanjoo until she reached her dorm room and slammed the door at his face, and finally decided to leave her for the day and comeback again later because he knew that in the end she’d agree to go anyway.

INTERACTIONS/STORY.
When she first met Luhan, Hanjoo had guessed that he was going to be annoying, but she’d never expected him to be this annoying. Like really, he just wouldn’t leave her alone. Well, it is true that he was her mentor and couldn’t really leave her alone, but she seriously could use a break once in a while. But of course it was too much of a request, because in the end she still had to deal with her mentor’s flirty and irritating behavior 24/7. Not to mention the fact that Luhan could easily know what she really thought and felt, and he used that for teasing her even more. Hanjoo had never consider her intelligence as something special, but when one day she figured out the way to prevent her thoughts from being read by Luhan (much to his displeasure), for once she feels highly accomplished.

The mentoring sessions with Luhan were no better. Every time they meet to train, all Luhan did was giving her brief explanations and overviews about the works and duties of a guardian, and afterwards sending her to do tasks that didn’t relate to the lesson at all. She knew—because she’d been paying attention to the lessons—that the jobs of a guardian of the minds didn’t include helping Kris rescue an endangered species of bird, or watching Jongdae steering tornadoes, or consoling a crying Tao (she had no idea what to do other that patting his shoulder and saying ‘there, there’). Luhan wouldn’t tell her why she had to do all this, and she couldn’t help but doubting the credibility of her so called mentor.

~o~

Luhan had known that when he decided to recruit Hanjoo as his mentee, he signed himself up for weeks (or months, or years) of getting cold shoulders and sarcastic comebacks, but he honestly didn’t mind—in fact he found it kind of amusing. Every time he would get all flirty and touchy with Hanjoo, he could see that she always became flustered for like a second, but immediately covered it up with a scowl and spiteful retort. Luhan understood that Hanjoo wasn’t used to not being by herself, but he was determined to make Hanjoo open up. That was why he had told the other guardians that he was going to send Hanjoo to them instead of practicing with him; he wanted Hanjoo to interact with the other guardians and get to know them better. He thought it was a perfect, win-win strategy: Hanjoo could get new friends, and he could get more rest.

Luhan was glad that after sometime, Hanjoo seemed to be enjoying herself in the cloudlands, and even though she still had a long way to go, Hanjoo’s curiosity and amazing observation skill had been doing her good. However, it had caused him more headache than he’d like, because not only had Hanjoo figure out a way to block him from entering her mind, she also had developed a liking for exploration. Hanjoo liked doing this thing she called ‘close-up observations’. By close up, she meant really close, as in descending into different countries in different continents, leaving Luhan the trouble of searching the whole planet for her. So one day, after forcefully getting her to sit down and let him enter her mind (it was the first time Hanjoo seeing Luhan so stern she had no choice than to obey), he gave Hanjoo a temporary telepathy gift. It allowed the two of them to communicate through telepathy anytime and anywhere, until the time would come that Hanjoo would receive her own ability, that way every time she decided to wander off Luhan would be spared from the panic attacks. Little did she know, Luhan other reasons for giving her the ability. [a/n: could he do that? I hope he could do that it’d be so sweet ;-;]

~o~

The other residents of the cloudlands had always found Luhan and Hanjoo’s relationship amusing to watch. Hanjoo always seemed to scowl at Luhan and push him away, but if you look close enough, actually she was the clingy one. When she started her life in cloudlands, for the first few months (or years?) all she’d been doing is hiding behind Luhan’s back, that they jokingly called her ‘Luhan’s shadow’. And Luhan, despite all the teasing and flirting, was always there to protect Hanjoo whenever Baekyeol started playing jokes on her or whenever Jongdae found it funny to startle her with thunderclaps despite her fear (Hanjoo hated to admit it, but the mind-link thingy was actually pretty useful). It was also clear that Luhan had done a very good job at making Hanjoo loosen up and become more friendly—and everyone was happy about it, because up close and personal, Hanjoo was actually a good friend. This couple might still have a long way to go, but one didn’t need telepathy to be able to see that the two of them really liked each other.

~o~

Luhan had always been brilliant with words, so he didn’t understand why it was so hard to confess to Hanjoo. Never mind confess, it was hard to even look at Hanjoo in the eyes ever since he had realized that he had fallen for her. So one night, while watching her sleeping, Luhan entered her mind and spoke to her in her dream. He pretended to know nothing when Hanjoo avoided her the whole day after, and constantly following her while pressing her to tell him what the matter was. Hanjoo then finally told him (with a blushing face) that she had dreamt of him confessing, and only then did Luhan reveal the truth—that it hadn’t been a dream, and that he honestly liked her. Luhan watched as Hanjoo’s eyes widened in shock and just laughed, saying "you don’t have to say anything, I can read your mind, remember?" and kissed her in the lips.
