Pride. The word he is willing to protect before anything else. For him, losing this means ruining everything he has accomplished now. Alexis tried his best to focus on treating his patient. But the last phone call that he just had can’t get out of his head.

“Dr. Alexis, are you okay?” The nurse asked him.
“I’m fine.” He answered.  After treating his 2:30 AM patient, he went back to his office.

Dr. Alexis Quindoza. He is the newly assigned head doctor of the emergency room in Central Medical Center – the country’s largest hospital. Being assigned as the head doctor of the ER, Alexis is bounded with duties. From treating patients 24/7, reporting every doctor’s meetings, and training interns, he barely sees the sun because of his work. The hospital is his new home, despite owning two condo units and a car. But this does not bother him at all, because this is what he wanted and this is what he had worked hard for to achieve.

He remembered everything the voice on the other line told him.

“Alexis, I’m back. Can.. can we make it up again?”

Every word is like a knife stabbing his heart. But Alexis hung up before he can say anything. No, I hate her. And there’s no way I would want her back. She hated me. She left me torn into pieces. Alexis thought. He doesn’t want the woman back to him. Forgiving her means like killing himself and he never wanted to do that. Alexis reminisced the story of how he started hating her.

One summer morning, Alexis woke up in his dorm. It is *insert date here*. It was his birthday. He was very excited that time because he was expecting a visit from the girl he loves the most. But then, he received a text message.

“Alexis,

I’m sorry I can’t make it today. Or even tomorrow. Or even next year. This might probably the last text message I’ll send you. I will be leaving for America today. I’m so sorry. Please. Please forgive me. But always remember that I love you, and I always will.”

Alexis froze as he read the text message. Tons of questions popped on his mind. He thought maybe she doesn’t love him anymore, or maybe she never did. Maybe he wasn’t enough. All of these bothered him but then he realized that if she says she love him, why did she left him?

Every questions left unanswered ate him up. Alexis loved her so much and she left her on his special day. He can’t find any justice with what she did to him so Alexis worked hard to pursue what he is now. He wants to prove that without her, he can do everything and be the best. Alexis wants to let her know that he is already successful and he doesn’t need her anymore. But now that she says she’s back, he really doesn’t know what to do.

A couple of days past, and Alexis sort of forgot the phone call already. His works ate him up and for him, remembering that incident would be very stupid. He thinks that he shouldn’t waste time in killing himself. But then, he received another phone call, from the same number. After seven rings, he answered the phone.

“Alexis.. dear.” The voice sounds so sad. “I’m sorry. If I can only make it up with you again, but I think I can no longer do it anymore. I know that you’ll like it best if I disappear completely right? But before that happens, can you please forgive me first?” Alexis did not respond.

“I’m sorry. Please forgive me. I love you, and I always will.” She continued. He finally hung up. Alexis can no longer contain her words. Tears started to fall from his eyes. His mind fighting over his heart. No, I can’t. He thought. Forgiving you is ruining everything I have accomplished now. He wiped his tears off and continued working.

Days passed, but he still can’t forget everything she said. He can’t sleep nor focus on everything he is doing so he decided to take a leave. Taking a vacation doesn’t do him any better too. Apparently, it makes him worse because he can’t do anything else but think of her so he decided to get back to work even if he is still having a hard time. His interns are very worried about him. They keep asking if he’s okay, if it’s really okay for him to work, or if he had lost a loved one.

Lost a loved one. He thought. Am I about to lose her completely? Why? How? Wait, is she even a loved one?  Alexis keeps on convincing his self. Before he can overthink more, someone knocked on his door again.

“Doc, a new patient has arrived.” The intern spoke as he entered the room.

“Do you need to call me just because a new patient arrived? I’ve already told you that you will call me only if you don’t know what to do anymore.” He responded angrily.

“I’m sorry sir, but this is sort of important. The patient... The patient...” The intern can’t make up her words. Alexis pushed the intern away and found his way out of the door. As he walks through the hallway, he can feel his heart pounding. He never experienced being nervous while treating patients. Alexis sensed that something very unusual will happen.

As he opened the door of the emergency room, everyone was looking at him, pitifully.

It was her. The one in the bed. The woman he was hiding from since she left him. The woman she wants to brag of his success. The only reason why his tears fall off ever since she left. The only one he had ever loved. It is her, now in front of him.

“Alexis.” The woman called him weakly.

“Mom.” Tears started to pour from their eyes. In a blink of an eye, every reason why Alexis hated her is all gone. All he remembers is that he missed her, he loves her, and he’s sorry for closing his door for her.

Everyone left the room slowly. The nurses and the interns inside tapped his back gently before they go. “I’m sorry.” His mom mouthed.

“No, mom. No. I’m sorry. I’m so stupid. After all, all my titles are a bunch of trash. You’re all I need now. I love you mom. I love you.” Alexis cried. His mother smiled and held his hand. Alexis hugged her tightly. She grabbed a letter from her pocket, and Alexis read it immediately.

Alexis,

It’s been a long time. I’m very happy of what you are now. You became successful without anyone supporting you. You really is the best son I’ve ever had. I’m sorry. I’m sorry I lacked. I’m sorry because I left. aaaaa

and there. please help me continue! :)
