Like any young person, Haruka did actually start out a trainer. It was short lived however like short lived as in she went to the Vivirdian City and called it quits on becoming a trainer because it just wasn't her thing. She ended up going back to Pallet Town and decided to work for Professor Oak as a way to realize what she wanted to do and Bam, she ended up being stuck there because researching and becoming a Pokemon Professor was what she wanted to do with her life.
Her doctorial experience mostly comes from taking care of the various Pokemon that roam and are stored at Professor Oak's lab. She learned mostly from him.
battle style
She doesn't really battle, but when she does, it's a bit obvious that she is pretty inexperience though she tries to make it up by trying to outwit the other trainer. It works like 40% of the time because sometimes her temper gets the best of her and it all goes downhill

People always ask how Squirtle got stuck with such a pain in the partner such as Haruka because Squirtle is a gentle soul. He is friendly pokemon and frankly a bit of a pushover. Squirtle though, is a naturally curious so he often goes off on his own if he sees something that catches his eye which makes Haruka go look for him frantically.

*Haruka is a bit overprotective of Squirtle especially in the presence of who she calls 'bad' influences and Squirtle follows around Haruka quite a lot. Whenever Haruka does something, he's always there to help...except when he runs off, I guess.

Espurr, when you're around her, is a unnerving. She is quiet as she stands there watching you with big eyes that are looking into your soul. Though she gives off a mysterious kind of air to her, she actually very nice and caring. Notably, she is a bit slow to react.
