Rant on Overdose... I guess?

Alright, now that the official MVs are actually out... Well, I applaud SM for putting forth something so good in the first place, but there are aspects of both versions that I'm a bit at odds with.

Firstly, whoever dressed them in those fugly nineties wannabe rapper boyband rags needs to burn. (There are some acceptable exceptions, but in general those outfits should be disposed of in an acid bath of doom. Especially the hats.)

About the song itself... Guess I should point out first that I am very much M biased since I think most EXO tracks sound better in Mandarin Chinese than Korean - this will most likely shine through later on.

Anyhow, while I love the sound, and the lyrics are good and all, I can't help but wonder about the assigned parts for each member. I mean, they're supposedly promoting separately (as evidenced by M appearing on show after show in mainland China) and yet the MVs are made exactly as Wolf and Growl - a mix of K and M members providing vocals.

I know I know, "we are one". But if they say one thing they should stick to it. I was looking forward to separate promotions, because I believed it would give everyone a little more time in the spotlight, but like this they might as well keep promoting as OT12. (Which isn't a bad thing because parts of the choreo look pretty, dare I say it, lame... When it's just six of them performing.)

Also, it's not like I don't understand why SM puts so much focus on their beloved vocal line, but it seems a little uninclusive to divide the parts the way they have, since the whole rapper line is pretty much excluded from one or the other version depending on their native language... I mean even Wolf and Growl made room for one short sentence each. *heavy sigh*

Now, as I mentioned before I am a rather biased person, towards M mainly because dundundundun, that's where my ultimate bias of all times happens to be. And I'm sort of irritated, now that I'm breaching the topic of extreme biasedness (<--- wish autocorrect would show me if that is a real word) I can't stop raving without mentioning the weird rap part in M. Like, okay, Kris is fine as a rapper I guess, he's gotten a lot better recently in any case, and I don't have a problem with Xiumin though I struggle to figure out what his role actually is. And I suppose since Tao did get that rap part in Growl it might even things out to let Kris take this one... But still. I'm struggling to cope with the fact that Tao, who was the main rapper last time around as far as I could tell, suddenly has like two lines in the whole song.

And I'm not trying to offend anyone (because gods do a lot of exo stans get insulted easily) but why does SM insist on making vocals rap? I mean in two moons, wolf and growl I'm pretty sure it was Lay filling that third slot, but now all of the sudden it's Xiumin? Neither of them have been listed as rappers before... Have they? I just- ide-... Let me cry for a bit. *ugly sob* SM what the are you even... Asdfghjkl.

I guess there's a lot more to be said about the whole thing (marshmallow shirts, getting lost in a one-way maze, Kris doing the dance solo in the opening - he's not bad but... Y'know?) but sleep-deprivation is killing me. Slowly. Painfully. *eyeballs sizzling from screen's light* Shoot me please.

Ugh.

Tl;dr: throw stylist and gangsta clothes in a furnace, separate the 12 properly ffs, give every member at least one line each, and make up your bloody minds about what roles each member has to fill. Geez SM. *eyeroll*

Agree or disagree? Let me know yeah, always up for debate. And tea. Anyone want tea?

Finally, wishing fabulous Byun Baekhyun a happy birthday (better late than never right?) and sending love and encouragement for all of EXO with their delayed comeback~! Looking forward to all the variety to come~

and as for "role filling"...even though in kpop it is good to have appointed roles and recognizing them...a little mixing up wouldn't hurt. If we get used to the same formula...for example member A only sings and member B only raps then kpop would turn out to be very bland.

I think EXO has great potential and they could be one of those groups that continously surprise their fans with their improvements and experiemnts.

Well, first...Xiumin is actually a rapper and a vocal. His role in EXO hasnt been properly established. That could be a great thing for EXO (for M especially) if SM plays their cards right. Exo voted Xiumin as their "highest note" though nobody has actually heard him sing properly. And he did win a singing contest (well...it was a karaoke singing contest but still) and Xiumin has said his role was to "scream and screech" in EXO/Mama. (which is really sad if you think about it.

As for the vocal line "rapping". I have no qualms about that. And as far as I can tell..."rap" isn't thoroughly defined in Kpop. Because there are be songs that sound like they have rap parts in them when actually they just have that kind of beat. It's sorta like pseudo-rap. And i don't think vocals (especially idols) should limit themselves to what they are great at. They should expand their horizons and try different things like going out of their comfort zone. D.O. can rap. He can rap GOOD. But we have yet to hear him. (he's a sick beatboxer though)

And that's commendable.
Much like how "rappers" sing sometimes (especially when the songs they have don't have a rap part). Take Chanyeol (omg his singing voice is sooo agdjamdjksmd) and Kai. Even Tao sings. We'll get to Tao later.

Okay those outfits . and those fugly hats (I had those when I was little) are just so freaking ugly. D.O. and Tao and Chen are sorta dressed in an acceptable manner so they pass.
But everyone else....I agree. The stylist needs to burn.

And as. for the line allocation....the version you hear in the MVs aren't the ones they are gonna actually perform on stage. So if you took all of M's lines in both versions you'd notice the pattern of how they are ordered. But Tao has no long parts. I think that's because they wanna improve duizhang's skills. Or they just wanna achieve the same timbre or feel that Chanyeol has in the K version. Either way Zi Tao is a badass underground rapper.
