Chad Future?
Hello Subbies!
So in this blog, I'm gonna address some of my feelings in light of Chad Future dropping his single featuring our beloved Ravi from VIXX.
In the case of Chad Future, he's supposedly bringing about this American KPOP genre.
And as always, let me say that my opinion is my own. You can agree or disagree. I'm gonna say what I want and that's that.
Personally, I don't much care for Chad Future or his music. I think the whole concept of 'American' KPOP is completely insulting. I truly do. I find offensive, actually. If 'American' KPOP is gonna sound like Chad Future's music, then I want nothing to do with it. Even if he didn't call it that, I still wouldn't listen to it, but I take it a bit more personally because, like many of us here, I'm a loyal KPOP fan. I find this 'American' KPOP offensive because it completely takes away from the whole idea of KPOP itself.
Now, let me clarify a little bit. Prior to this song featuring Ravi, I didn't really know who Chad Future was. I'd heard about him on and off but I was never really curious to find out who the guy was. And after seeing this video with Ravi [I'm not gonna post it here, ya'll can look it up. It actually irritates me to listen to it], I can honestly say I'm glad I didn't look him up earlier because I wouldn't have had anything really positive to say. Now, kudos to the guy for following his dreams and doing the damn thing, obviously people like what's he's doing otherwise he wouldn't have gotten an idol, Ravi, involved with him. But that same thing can be said about ALOT of musicians in general that I do and don't like.
Trust me, I have NO IDEA how the HELL Waka Flocka made it as far into the industry. Or 2Chainz for that matter. *shudders*
But that's neither here nor there.
The fact of the matter is, he's obviously got something about him that people like and people feel that is a good thing and wanna support it.
Kudos to him.
I'm not buying.
So to find out more about the guy, I started to go through and look at some of his MV's and listen to his songs. I try to be a well rounded person and listen to other songs before I develope an opinion about an artist. And upon looking at his other work, once again, I'm not really impressed. If anything, I'm actually irritated by him wanting to be an American KPOP star and introduce 'American' KPOP even more.
The music he makes is NOT Kpop.
It's just AMERICAN.
It sounds like any other American pop song I would hear on the radio from like Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, or whoever else.
"But Deidra, c'mon! That's crap! I bet if the lyrics were in Korean you would like the song!"
No.
No, I wouldn't.
Is it possible that there are actually songs IN KOREAN that I don't like?
Uh...DUH!!!
Regardless of WHATEVER language the song is, it is actually possible for me to just NOT LIKE IT AT ALL.
That's how I feel about Chad Future songs.
It's just more personal for me because I love KPOP so much. I've been a fan since I was 14 years old, so that's almost 8 years of my life that I've dedicated to this genre of music. And honestly, I feel like anybody that is REALLY into their favorite genre of music, would be defensive if some artist came in and said that their songs fit that genre when it really doesn't.
Chad Future, these songs are not KPOP and it has nothing to do with the fact that you're white or that you're not singing in Korean.
It has EVERYTHING to do with the fact that It's just flat not NOT KPOP at all.
Period.
It's just American Music.
And like I said before, I find the term 'American' KPOP extremely offensive because it's like a sad attempt at taking away from KPOP itself. Like, from all the music genre's of the world, KPOP is in a class of it's own. It's in own little bubble and is truly JUST NOW getting to become popular. KPOP still falls into that category of our little secret because the global population at large doesn't quite get KPOP, what it is, and what it stands for.
And hopefully, people will become more open minded to it.
But if Chad Future is supposed to make that happen....
Then I'm a little concerned.
And like I said, I take offense to any jab at KPOP because it means so much to me. That being said, this obviously begs the following question to be answered:
"Well Deidra, what does KPOP mean to you?"
"Why do you even like KPOP in the first place?"
I actually thought really hard about these 2 questions and my response now makes a lot of sense to me because I never really sat down and thought about the reason WHY I love KPOP.
For me, I relate so much to KPOP because, in a way, it harkens back to an important part of my childhood. I'm a 90s baby, so I was right in the midst of the boy band/girl group era in the global music scene. Best believe I had Backstreet Boys and the Spice Girls all over my room. I had CDs and everything. I even have the Spice World DVD sitting in my DVD player RIGHT NOW. Like, I fell in love with the whole idea of the boy band/ girl group idea from my favorite groups from when I was a kid. And sure, there are boy bands and girl groups now in the music industry but not quite like they were in the 90s. These groups became a huge part of my identity and my being because they made songs that I liked and were just a major part of my childhood and my overly vivid imagination. And I lost all of that as I got older.
And then KPOP appeared in my life.
I fell in love INSTANTLY.
KPOP aboely blew my mind because it was everything I had missed in music since I was a kid. I missed the music shows like TRL and the original 106&Park and other shows dedicated SPECIFICALLY for music. We don't have that anymore in the American music scene. And I miss that. I miss MV's being ENTERTAINING. I miss the theatrics and the concepts and the choreography. I miss ALL OF THAT. All of that was a part of the 90s boy band and girl group era that I loved so much. I would get so excited when a new album came out. It stopped being like that when reality tv flooded the market and straight foolishness flooded the music stations. It wasn't about music anymore.
And then KPOP happened for me.
Best little accident that ever happened when I came across KPOP almost 8 years ago.
KPOP is a part of me because it connects and mirrors a vital part of my childhood that I still hold very close to my heart.
That's why I get defensive about it.
That's why I find Chad Future unacceptable in claiming that his stuff is KPOP.
I'm not havin' it and I stand by what I say.
In the same breathe, as I've said previously, no shade to Chad Future. I'm sure he's a nice guy. Kudos to him for doing the damn thing. He'S obviously doing better than me. No shade to him and good luck to him.
I'm not a fan and I have a right to not be.
But that's all for now.
End rant.
What do ya'll think?
What's your opinion of American KPOP?
What's your opinion of Chad Future?
Let me know in the comments and we can keep this dialogue going. All opinions are welcome, just keep it civil!
Until next time...
