Flashlight in one hand and a ring of keys in the other, he patrolled the corridors with his head held high and his steps purposeful. It was night – heknew. The moon was out and the stars were shining – he knew that too. But within this space, the world was quiet and steeped in a never-endingdarkness. Time looped in a continuum, replaying the terrors and horrors that dripped down every wall and settled into every crevice.
A dying scream emanating from the electrocution room had him smiling; a subtle twitch of the lips that made him appear almost gentle. Almost. But that was what life meant here – toeing that fragile divide between justice for the benefit of man and cruelty that crushes souls. And every little bit of it was so damn rewarding; being in control of something that the gods had no reign over and Heaven had turned a blind eye to. This was home. This was his self-carved utopia.
