How to Concoct Your Very Own Fandom Classic

So you wanna be a writer? Well, before you try your hand at writing a fic in hopes of it attaining "fandom classic" status, there are a few things that you need to take note of.

1. Canon pairings only

It's that simple. You either write about what everyone else ships, or you wallow in the seas of oblivion. Nope, don't even think about writing bias x OC/female idol/you fics. Those are the type of fics that everybody scoffs at and probably wouldn't spare a second glance. Write only about Baekyeol, Kaisoo, Hunhan, or Taoris. Attempt to write about any other non-canon pairing, and well, you'd be lucky if you even get a comment. There are plenty of well-written fics that aren't about canon or popular pairings (Xiuhan's Supernova, anyone?) but as such they don't get enough attention. Why would anyone bother wasting their time reading some pairing they don't even ship? (48 Hours is evidently an exception and will not be mentioned.)

(A tip though: try writing Hunhan which currently has no fandom classic of its own, instead of Baekyeol, Taoris or Kaisoo which already have multiple classics.)

2. Make someone die

It's official - someone has to die. No questions asked. What's the point of writing a fandom classic when someone doesn't die anyway? Boring. Even better, make him die of natural causes, such as an illness (cancer is a hot favourite), to bring out the concept of star-crossed lovers. The aims of fandom classics, no doubt, are to rip the average fangirl's heart out and tear it to pieces. Bonus points if you manage to make them use up all the tissue in their house (Who cares about the environment?). Regardless of whether the plot is simple or complicated and intricate, the final goal is to kill off your main character and leave the other one broken. There's no other way you can achieve long-lasting impact in a fic of only 20k words if both your characters end up happily ever after.

3. Only oneshots

No chaptered fics. Nope, ain't nobody got time for that. In the world, everything's moving fast - way too fast - and you want your fic to catch people's attention fast too. Fangirls are mostly hormonal teenagers with the attention span of a goldfish, and you want to give them a good reason to continue reading your fic instead of reblogging pictures of oppa's face. Chaptered fics are way too long and draggy and you can rest assured that half your reader population would have died off by the second chapter. Some exceptions exist, like Anterograde Tomorrow (which is technically a threeshot and probably has more words than the average chaptered fic) and Arbitrage (a threeshot as well), but it can be argued that the only reason they're split into multiple shots is because of LJ's word limit. Anyway, why the heck would you want to make something chaptered when it only means more work for yourself? "Less work, more impact" should be the motto of every aspiring fanfic writer.

4. End with a memorable quote

No matter what plot the fic has, all fandom classics have a thing in common - that memorable quote that can and will be quoted 19023985 times by crazed fangirls worldwide sobbing about how they bawled themselves to sleep and couldn't eat for three days after they read it. What's there to remember your fic by, if not a quote? You could choose to end with a few short and sweet words that make a long-lasting impact on the reader à la Anterograde Tomorrow (“My name is Jongin. I’m the writer who lives next door. See you tomorrow, hyung. Don’t forget!”) or be a little more extreme and follow 10080's example ("01010100 01101000 01100001 01101110 01101011 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101 00100000 01100110 01101111 01110010 00100000 01101100 01101111 01110110 01101001 01101110 01100111 00100000 01101101 01100101 00100000 01100101 01110110 01100101 01101110 00100000 01101001 01100110 00100000 01101001 01110100 00100000 01110111 01100001 01110011 00100000 01101010 01110101 01110011 01110100 00100000 01100110 01101111 01110010 00100000 01100001 00100000 01110111 01100101 01100101 01101011 00100000 01100001 01101110 01100100 00100000 01110100 01101000 01100001 01101110 01101011 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101 00100000 01100110 01101111 01110010 00100000 01101101 01100001 01101011 01101001 01101110 01100111 00100000 01101101 01100101 00100000 01100110 01100101 01100101 01101100 00100000 01100001 01110011 00100000 01101001 01100110 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101 00100000 01101100 01101111 01110110 01100101 01100100 00100000 01101101 01100101 00100000 01100001 01100111 01100001 01101001 01101110 00101110 00100000 01011001 01101111 01110101 00100000 01110100 01101111 01101111 01101011 00100000 01101101 01100101 00100000 01100010 01100001 01100011 01101011 00100000 01110100 01101111 00100000 01100001 00100000 01110100 01101001 01101101 01100101 00100000 01110111 01101000 01100101 01101110 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101 00100000 01101100 01101111 01110110 01100101 01100100 00100000 01101101 01100101 00100000 00100000 01100001 01101110 01100100 00100000 01110100 01101000 01100001 01110100 00100111 01110011 00100000 01100001 01101100 01101100 00100000 01001001 00100000 01100011 01101111 01110101 01101100 01100100 00100000 01100101 01110110 01100101 01110010 00100000 01100001 01110011 01101011 00100000 01100110 01101111 01110010 00100000 01101001 01101110 00100000 01110100 01101000 01101001 01110011 00100000 01110011 01101000 01101111 01110010 01110100 00100000 01101100 01101001 01100110 01100101 01110100 01101001 01101101 01100101 00101110 00100000 01001001 00100000 01101100 01101111 01110110 01100101 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101 00101100 00100000 01100111 01101001 01100001 01101110 01110100 00101110 00100000 01010100 01101000 01100001 01101110 01101011 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101 00100000 01100110 01101111 01110010 00100000 01100101 01110110 01100101 01110010 01111001 01110100 01101000 01101001 01101110 01100111 00101110 00101110 00101110") Yes, that was the entirety of the so-called "memorable" quote of 10080 (but I'd bow down to anyone who's able to remember that). If your fic becomes so unique that people will never look at something ordinary the same way again (10080 and binary/Absolute Chanyeol and robots/Anterograde Tomorrow and post-it notes), that means your fic has really and truly attained fandom classic status.

Despite all these, remember that ultimately, fanfic writing is all about creativity and inspiration, so go all out and write yourself a fic! Who knows, you might end up getting famous.

Now, do you think you have what it takes to write the next big thing?

A/N:
My attempt at satire. Evidently, you cannot take me seriously.

i am crying with laughter. I actually had no idea if you were being sarcastic or not but I guess by the 2nd paragraph it was pretty clear xD I have to agree with you on the no oc/females/you fics, as soon as i see a 'you' or 'OC' in the tags (pretty much exchangeable, really), I immediately skip that fic... AND SO MUCH YES FOR THE CHARACTER DEATH LIST. ONE DOES NOT SIMPLY GIVE OUT HAPPY ENDINGS!! ugh. With all these 'tips', you should totally write the next fandom classic! :D
