Nice to meet you. Yes, really.
Family:

Nam Yi Hwan/ 40/ Father/ Strict, introverted, man of few words, expressionless/ Scholar

Hwang Gyu Won/ 38/ Mother/ Elegant, sometimes childish, stubborn, humorous/ She was a well-known gisaeng for being gifted with playing the gayageum beautifully.

Background:
Having a scholar for a father and a gisaeng as a mother, Hee Joo thought that it was a strange combination. Her mother was known for her gayageum playing as a gisaeng and many high class men and women enjoyed her music. She had been requested many times by ministers, scholars and many high ranking officials. Of course, her father was no exception. Being a scholar, from time to time, he would fall into the desires of being entertained by a gisaeng; especially Gyu Won. It was love at first sound. The scholat had fallen in love with the elegant player who strung the gayageum with grace. Her ethereal beauty was a major plus but, even without it, he would sure to have loved her.
Her mother was a tough cookie to woo and her father tried coutless ways to win her affection. Back in the Joseon Dynasty, it was hard for anyone to marry a gisaeng. They were after all the government's property. The only way was to purchase them from the hands of the government but, it would leave many bankrupt and the buyers usually lived the rest of their lives in poverty. The ones who were willing and able to do so were the high ranking officials. However, there was another way. Gisaengs were able to have a gibu, a gisaeng husband, who provided economic support such as buying the gisaengs pretty things and they also provided protection. But, gibu had no legal claim on them. They were still owned by the government and they were still able to take on entertainment requests. But, her father did not want that. He wanted Gyu Won all to himself; he was selfish when it came to loving this gisaeng. Though no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't afford having Gyu Won by his side. However, one day,on the spur of the moment, he gave up all the money he had saved and bought Gyu Won.
She wasn't so thrilled about it. She was upset that a scholar threw away all that he had for a gisaeng. He could have had a better, comfortable life if he had stuck to his books and found a daughter of a minister or something. Despite the feelings she had about that act, Gyu Won couldn't help but feel pity towards the man who had claimed to love her. That pity...it turned into love. But it wasn't meant to last. Hee Joo's father, Yi Hwan, had gotten a job right after Hee Joo was born and he had to work overseas. Gyu Won didn't like that at all. She was afraid that something was going to happen. And it did. The ship that carried Yi Hwan to his job at Hong Kong was caught in a storm and it sank. He never survived and Gyu Won was stricken with grief. Hee Joo was only seven when it happened. She had developed a fear of the ocean. Even though her mother went into depression, Hee Joo's memory of Gyu Won's gayageum playing and how beautiful and graceful her mother was inspired her to become just like her. She wanted to become a Gisaeng.
Her mother was a strong woman and had overcome her husband's loss. She focused her entire attention around Hee Joo. Her daughter was the centre of her world now. When Gisaengs had children, their daughters were to inherit the status of a gisaeng much to Gyu Won's displeasure. She never wanted her daughter to have this sort of life, she wanted her to follow in her father's footsteps and become a scholar. But, unfortunately, she was a gisaeng due to traditions. Had her daughter not wanted to become a gisaeng, Gyu Won would have gladly left the country with her beloved daughter to start a new life. But, Hee Joo insisted on becoming one, she had to anyways. And so, that was how her training started.
She started at the age of eight but since she was a slow learner, it took her a long while before she perfected playing the gayageum as well as other areas. However, her poetry writing skills were superb. Gyu Won was proud of her daughter's progress in learning and was happy to learn that she had inherited her father's poetry writing skills. She was finally done her official training at the age of seventeen and started right away to work as Gisaeng. She had inherited her mother's reputation as the most gifted gayageum player amongst the gisaengs as well as an extraordinary poetry writer. She preferred to being a poet and loved poetry more than she did with the gayageum playing. As she continued on with her job, she realized how much her mother hated being a gisaeng. It was beautiful on the outside but it was horrible on the inside. Women being made to entertain high-ranking officials and whatnot who had a wife and maybe children just disgusted her. She felt pity for the wives who devoted their love to their husbands and they go find comfort in the entertainment in other women. She regretted taking on the life of a gisaeng. However, she had to bear with it since this was her job now. She had to do this in order to support her mother. Throughout her few years as working as a gisaeng, she managed to use her beauty to her advantage. Having men at her feet and to do almost whatever was quite fun and she was thoroughly amused. However, there is this one man who just requests her daily. He requests her to play the gayageum for him but he wouldn't even speak a word to her. Even if she starts the conversation, she was ignored. The only time she's able to hear his voice was when he greeted her and when he said goodbye. It had upset her greatly. All her requesters were always expressed their satisfaction but not with this guy. No. He just sits there listening with an expresionless face. She honestly could not stand the man.

Personality: Arrogant, resourceful, vain, manipulative, strong-willed.

  • ArrogantPride is one of the seven deadly sins. But there's a borderline between being proud and being arrogant. Hee Joo takes pride in everything she does which often leads to her being too over-confident in the things she does. She would never be ashamed of herself nor her parents and how she was raised. But the on thing that differentiates her as being arrogant was the fact that she considered herself to be superior to thise around her. She doesn't care whether or not she makes friends or enemies. They are all the same to her. She uses her skills and abilitiesto show that she is better and does not even bat an eye to those around her. She doesn't consider others feelings. After all, she is the best.
  • Resourceful- Being faced with any difficulty, she manages to use her head to find ways to deal with it with ease. She weighs her options and decides which one would be the best solution. She always estimate what assets she had in order to find ways to solve any problem thrown at her. She thinks "outside the box". She goes the extra distance to come up with plans and ideas that may not occur to other people. She may know all the answers but she also knows how to or who to get the answers from.
  • VainShe cares about her image very deeply. The way she looked, talked and carried herself; she always paid full attention on them. She even carries a small pocket mirror with her everywhere she goes. Her mother always joked and said that she had the case of the femal version of the "Prince Syndrome". Of course, if she didn't pay attention, how would she attract those high ranking officials? She never used to worry about her looks and all that until she actually got her first job as a gisaeng. She had less makeup, her posture was supposedlly bad and the man was not so pleased with her. After being brutally criticized, Hee Joo wiped away the tears that she wasted on those rude remarks and worked hard on changing her appearance to fit the tastes of those high class men. It boosted her self-confidence by plenty and now, she cares for her newly transformed herself as much as she cares for her mother, or maybe even more than her mother.
  • Manipulative- Over the two years she's been working as a gisaeng, she managed to learn how to be sly and calculating. With her beauty at power and her knowledge of extensive vocabulary with much thanks to her father, she is able to influence others around her just with a string of words. Especially men who are more than willing to do what she wanted them to do. Toying with their affection was wonderful, she couldn't help but love what she could do with them. She basically have them wrapped around her finger. However, she has no gibu which was great since it would be troublesome to have a "husband" of sorts. Sometimes she wondered whether she was going too far with their undying affection, almost to the point of being sadistic in the sense of enjoying a good fight between those idiotic men who vie for her attention.
  • Strong-Willed- Being stubborn and being strong-willed were two different things. Indeed, there's a fine line between the two. Hee Joo is a strong and stand true to what she believes in. When she means somethings, she definitely means it. She isn't the type to give up easily...well...not without a fight that is. She is a tough woman who is independentand will fight for what is right. She is a determined and dedicated girl to whatever task she is appointed to. Hee Joo doesn not get distracted and will stay focused. Even with her training, she followed through each step without rest. She practiced and practiced until she was just perfect. Despite being handicapped as a slow learner, she tries her best and will get things done. She is a woman of her word. With a strong will, nothing is ever impossible.

Trivia:

  • Her favourite drink is green tea. It helps her relax and unwind.
  • She loves hearing the sound of windchimes but there are no windchimes at her house. However, her neighbours do.
  • She has a small collection of handfans that she often uses as a gisaeng.
  • She wishes that her father was still alive to read the poems she had written.
  • She hopes that one day her poems would be published or noticed by other scholars.
  • In her spare time, she practices calligraphy and sometimes writes her poems in calligraphy.

Friends:

Yun Saewa / 24 / Best Friend / Sweet, talkative, always hungry, slightly pessimisstic / She was sold into the gisaeng house when she was ten years old. Her parents could not afford to pay taxes. Therefore, the government took Saewa as payment. They became instant friends when Saewa attempted to help her in training multiple times being five years her senior.

Rivals:

Choi Yi Seul / 22 / Rival / A gold-digger, flirty, intelligent, impatient / She was one of the top gisaengs in the Gisaeng House and was always praised for the littlest of tasks. Even the higher-ups were pleased with her. She had many requestors. She always told the other gisaengs that she would find a way to leave this hell hole. When one day, she was requested and had never returned. Many wondered what happened to her and so did Hee Joo. She had been bought by one of the ministers and had become a concubine. Hee Joo was the first to find out and rumours quickly spread. Hee Joo had been requested and while she waited for the minister, she heard weirs noises from the room next door. Knowing that it wasn't her place, her curiousity got the best of her and she cracked the door ajar. Her eyes went went in surprised and quickly scrambled back to her place. She had caught the minister and Yi Seul making love and she just felt hatred towards the gisaeng. Yi Seul had become the one things Hee Joo hates, a mistress. It turn outs that it was the Minister of Taxation who bought Yi Seul.

Oh Sehun  19  Father's Position: Minister of Taxation
Kim Minseok  20  Father's Position: Minister of Works

Background:
Born into a wealthy family, he was used to being pampered and having everything done with a snap of his fingers. He didn't have to work hard for anything. His dad was pretty strict with his education so he studied hard and was trained to be sharp and calculating. After all, his father had plans of his son taking over his position of finance and taxation. His mother on the other hand, wanted her son to grow up and have a family. She didn't want him involved with the government. She wanted him to become a scholar since his education was getting him into a position where knowledge is everything. Sehun wasn't sure what to do. He idolized his father and wanted to be just like him but then, he loved his mother and would do anything for her. This was his predicament. He decided to follow in his father's footsteps but of course, he would eventually marry and have a family just like his mother wanted but he'd be involved with the government nonetheless.
He thought his family was a happy one but boy was he wrong. He had found things about both his mother and father that had him in shock. He couldn't figure out whether he was more surprised or more angry. He first found out about his father. Sehun's teacher had called off a lesson since he couldn't make it so he had decided to roam about the estate. He had explored his home many times but there was always something new added thanks to his mother's redecorations. That was when he had passed his father's office. He heard his father's voice and a woman's voice that did not belong to his mother. Walking passed, his stomach churned as he heard what was definitely the sound of panting and moans. There was no doubt that his father had found a mistress. Hiding around the corner, he waited until they were done with their "meeting". Fortunately for him, the love-making sounds were drowned out by the sounds of the staff cooking in the kitchen. He was contemplating whether to just leave or stay since it was taking a bit too long. Just as he was about to leave, the door opened and out stepped a beautiful young woman; much too young for his father. Sehun's eyes narrowed, he had seen her before. She had been chatting with his father many times before and his mother too. Then he realized that his father was having an affair with a Gisaeng.
He couldn't bear to break his dear mother's heart nor could he ever forgive that goddamn Gisaeng and his father. His mother also enjoyed calling on a gisaeng for solely music purposes. Sehun remembered the Gisaeng who was requested daily for his mother. Her gayageum playing was exquisite and was the best that he had ever heard. He was only seventeen when he discovered his father's secrets and his mother's, he had just turned eighteen. His mother hired another Gisaeng for the gayageum. The one before was bought by a scholar and was the talk of the town. The scholar was a good friend of his mother's and he remembered how depressed his mother looked. Sehun wasn't sure how he knew but that look that his mother had when he found out, he knew that that the scholar was the man that his mother loved...not his father. The new Gisaeng, she had resembled the Gisaeng before. He soon realized that the newly hired gayaeum player was the scholar's daughter. He heard that he had died but was happy since his mother seemed happy when the new Gisaeng came and played. They often chatted when she was playing. However, that didn't stop him from hating Gisaengs. They were just looking for a way to weasel their way into a higher status. His father was not in the right either. But one thing was for certain, the memory of his picture perfect family was shattered. However, whenever he thought of the two gayageum gisaengs and his mother surrounded by the sound of the instrument, he was at peace. At age nineteen, he worked for his father being a finance officer and he will continue with his job until his father retires and he will be appointed the new Minister of Taxation someday...or he might end up being a scholar. Seeing what his father did to those people who could not afford the taxes was terrible. Frankly, he was digusted. If they had daughters, his father would take them as payment and put them in the Gisaeng House for training. He could see how much they didn't want to give their daughters up and honestly, the taxes were just ridiculous. It was too high for the poorer citizens as opposed to those who could afford them. He could not stand the sight of it. The government was too much and he would have to do something. He did not like the idea of families being torn apart just because they coudn't pay those ridiculously high tax prices.

Personality: Sharp and calculating, smart and a quick learner, possessive, reserved and serious.
  • Sharp and calculating- Sehun was raised in this manner. He's quick-witted and uses it to his advantage in countless situations. He can tell when something is wrong and does his best to solve any problem being thrown at him. He enjoys analyzing people's movements and anticipating what going to happen next. He weighs his option very carefully and chooses what's best. No matter what situation he falls in, he makes a decision based on the facts around him. He thinks that reality always wins against fiction/dreams. He's a person who sticks to the rules and hates breaking them.
  • Smart and a quick learner- He was born with it. Whether it be street smarts or book smarts, Sehun's got it all. He learns rather quickly absorbing information like a sponge. He adapts to any given environment and will do his best to strive for excellence. He has absolutely no tolerance when it comes to mistakes but will accept them since everyone is human. There was no such thing as "perfect" when it came to Sehun. "Perfect" was too overrated and honestly, he could not believe in such a things. It just did not exist.
  • Possessive- More like possessiveness in a child-like sense. What's mine is mine. Do not touch. I will not give. That's Sehun's midset when it came to his belongings. Whether it be his books down to his clothes, he will not lend it out to anyone. His favourite catch phrase "It's mine, get your own", that's to let people to know what he claimed. When it came to his possessions, he's very selfish about them and the word "share" could not even touch him. The only person he is willing to share his things with is his mother and no one else. He tends to be protective of his things. He would never let it leave his sight as he would fear it'll be lost.
  • ReservedHe keeps to himself and doesn't discuss his entire life story to any person who walks by him. He's not a very outgoing person and prefers to be on the safe side. He doesn't open up to people readily and prefers to be on the sidelines than up in the forefront. He's careful of what he says to other people and what he reveals about himself. However, he does socialize and says what he needs to rather than ramble on with unnecessary chit chat. He gets quick to the point and doesn't beat around the bush.
  • Serious- In other words, a boring person. Sehun isn't that fun to be with. He prefers work over play and could not be bothered with entertainment or mindless chatter. He's pretty emotionless and has a constant straight face on all the time. It's pretty rare when he attempts to make jokes or try to be fun. His mother thinks it's adorable when he tries to cheer her up. He ends up failing big time but his failure always cheers her up no doubt. He doens't like embarrassing himself but often does so for his mother. He works too hard and his mother just wants him to at least get someone to show him what fun is.
Relationship: Hee Joo is the new Gisaeng who replaces her mother for the wife of the Minister of Taxation. Her relationship with the lady was nice. She was kind and she had spoken highly of her father as well as her mother's reputation of a gisaeng. However, her requests seems to be dwindling down and she wondered why. There was no point in brooding over something like this since she had other requestors to entertain. After a while, she was requested by the Minister of Taxation's family but this time, their son requested her. She expected the son to be like his mother so she was looking forward to the meeting. When she arrived, she was not amused. He did not even bat an eye at her presence. He merely beckoned her in, greeted her and told her to start playing the instrument. No conversation was made. Only the sound of her gayageum and the sound of his pen scribbling away on papers. Once she was done, he bid her farewell and that was it. She was shocked at how his reactions were...terrible. Despite their awkward first meeting, he kept requesting her, his mother often came to  listen. It was the same pattern. He never spoke. She tried but he wouldn't respond. Only his mother did the talking when she was present. It was suffocating to be in the same room as he was. But that made Hee Joo more curious as to what kind of person he was. She never stopped her talking. She kept asking and chattering much to his displeasure. And, slowly but surely, he started to respond. And soon enough, he was comfortable talking with her as she did with him. But he was still a bit reserved.
One day when his mother was present, she had fainted which sent Sehun in a panic frenzy. Hee Joo realized that he wouldn't leave her side even as the doctor came in. This was the first time, she saw him vulnerable like that. He looked as if his entire world had crashed down and somehow...that made her heart flutter. She had the strong feeling of wanting to protect the man. That was how she developed the thing called "love". After that incident, he stopped the requests to care for his mother. Hee Joo felt...empty. She missed being in his office, playing the gayageum for him and his mother. When his mother got better, he continues his requests to Hee Joo. She was more than happy to comply. At this time, both of them seemed comfortable with each other and Sehun was more open. He didn't want to admit it but, he was starting fall in love with the Gisaeng. No one had tried to get him to open up before. Well...she was the first to try without giving up halfway. He felt a sense of ease being around her. Was this what they call "love"?
At first, Hee Joo was annoyed at the fact that Sehun wasn't like the other men who would be at her feet showering her with compliments. No. He acted as if she wasn't there at all. He had his full attention on the stack of papers on his desk. She mentally cursed herself for being jealous over paper. She couldn't handle the silence he was giving everytime he asked for her. It was stifling. She decided that she would have to be the first of the two to break the ice. She started to ask him simple questions like "What's your name?" and "What's your favorite colour, season?" He did answer with his name but he didn't say anything after that. She thought that maybe yes or no questions would work best so, she tried yet again: "Do you like to read?", "Do you like tea?" and it worked. He nodded or shook his head. After that, she slowly escalated her conversation with him. And now, she was comfortable talking to him and she couldn't live a day without hearing his voice.
Sehun was curious as to how wonderful this Gisaeng who his mother kept asking for was. He had asked his mother if he could request her from now on and she was more than happy to agree. When he first saw her, she didn't strike his fancy. She was just like the other Gisaeng; there was nothing special. He simply greeted her and continued on with his work. Even when she played the gayageum, the melody was nice but it wasn't all that either. But, he kept on asking for her. Soon enough, he got into the habit of listening to the gayageum while heworked. It was soothing and it helped him get his work done faster. However, it would have been nice without the quesitons pouring out of the girl's mouth. He tried to ignore her and focused more on the music and his work. But, his body responded with the yes/no questions and before he knew it, he was making conversation with her. At that point, he realized that she was different. She wasn't looking for a reason to raise her status. No. She was taking her time in getting to know him and he realized that was what he was yearning for all this time.

How they met: Hee Joo first met Sehun at his office. He was requested by him. But, she did see him with his father a few times at the Gisaeng house. Actually, that wasn't the first time that they had met. Hee Joo remembered but she wasn't sure if he did. She was working on a new poem during her free time but had stopped since Saewa informed her of the Minister of Taxation and his son was present. When she turned back to writing, her paper was gone. But, she managed to catch a glance ofthe paper floating about outside with the help of the breeze. She quickly got up and ran after it. Forget having mannerisms of a lady, she needed to get that paper. She was almost done with the paper and she didn't want it ruined. She was close to the paper but it had already been caught on a tree that was growing towards the Gisaeng House. She tiptoed and stretched but to no avail. She was a bit to short. Letting out a sigh of frustration, she saw another hand reaching for the paper. Quickly turning around, she immediately recognized the male to be the son of the Minister of Taxation. She bowed and quickly tried to grab the paper from him but he moved it higher as he raised his arm.
"A simple thank you" He stated waving the sheet.
"Thank you for retrieving my paper, sir" Hee Joo said with reluctance as he handed her the paper.
Hee Joo wasn't sure if he had remembered. She would have to ask if she wanted to know.

Scene requests?:
  • On the anniversary of her father's death, she's sad and Sehun tries to cheer her up with lame jokes and embarrasses himself while doing so.
  • When she's talking to one of the girl's love interests about something, Sehun's possessive side kicks in and says his catchphrase or he says something that indicates that Hee Joo was his and only his.
  • A few fluffly and adorable moments too please! x3

I've fallen quite hard over you.
