Things better left unsaid

Maybe I'm just a picky reader but I feel like I can't really enjoy fan fics that describe the female protagonist (or "you") in terms of physical looks. When I am constantly reminded of her features that I do not care for then I feel detached from the story when I want to be ed into it. I lose interest.

This isn't the case with all stories though; the ones that don't put great emphasis on a physical appearance don't phase me. Neither do stories with unusual physical characteristics (I am currently reading a story that involves a girl with silver hair! I actually think that's cool and I'm not bothered by it).

I don't know... I guess I'm only noticing this as a result of some stories that I have recently come across with incredibly tall, blonde leading ladies. I keep picturing the leading girl in a particular story as some super model because there is a constant emphasis on her height.

When I read a story I like to create the image of the girl in my own head. She isn't necessarily me but I construct an ideal girl for the story and let her play through all the scenes in my head; if I'm constantly reminded that the leading character doesn't look like that, then I often find myself drifting away from the story.

However, this isn't to say that I base my interest on a story by judging whether the leading girl physically looks the way I want her to or not! Sometimes I feel that if a story emphasizes too much on how a character looks as opposed to how she acts then that says quite a bit about the author's style. Chances are that it's a style I don't fancy.

I think I'm going to make "Things better left unsaid" a series of blog posts where I complain about what I don't like in fics haha!
