Character Personality

(Background)
Hwang Wookeun was born in Seoul, but his family moved to the UK before he was two.  His father got a job based out of London, so the whole family relocated.  Wookeun and his older brother and sister would spend their summers in Seoul with their grandparents.  Their Korean heritage was very important to the Hwangs, Korean was the only language acceptable inside the house.  Growing up, he often found himself in his sibling's shadows.  Wookeun struggled academically in science in math, but as the youngest he didn't get much pressure to really succeed.  He ended up spending most of the time on his own.  He would sit in the back of the classrooms, and most of his peers would ignore him.  At home, it was much the same.  He spent time in his rooms.  His siblings were preoccupied with their own friends and ventures, whether they were in London or Seoul, and didn't have time for their much-younger brother.

It wasn't until he turned 13 and discovered music that he finally started recieving attention from his peers and teachers.  He discovered in his chorus class that he'd see musical notes as different colors.  The entire concept fascinated him, and he began singing more and more frequently.  He was "discovered" by the choir teacher, who immediately recommended private lessons after school.  "You have an incredible gift," those words stuck with Wookeun.  He's never met anyone who wasn't wowed by his singing, and he let it get to his head after a while.  His parents were less than supportive, however.  "Music is a fool's profession."  His father said to him.  In no uncertain terms, his father let him know that he wasn't going to financially support such a venture.  If Wookeun wanted to study music, he had to do it by himself.  So Wookeun worked his off to get scholarships and grants to continue studying music.  He'd lie about his age to get odd jobs and saved every penny in order to afford tuition to Tech Music School in Acton, as well as spending all his free time practicing music with his choir instructor and studying to improve his rocky grades.  He had no friends and barely slept, for him it was all worth it.  He had a dream and he was going to seize it.  Nothing was going to stop him.

Until he got hit with a steamroller-sized revelation.  As he prepared for his senior year of high school, he met a boy who set his heart on fire. An American college boy on holiday, they had a passionate summer fling.  Suddenly everything in Wookeun's life made sense to him, it was like he found himself.  He was gay.  That was why he never looked at girls like his womanizer of a brother did.  It was this revelation that also destroyed Wookeun's life.  His mother caught them kissing.  Initially supportive and loving, it all did a complete 180 when she told Wookeun's father.  The man was furious, claiming that the west had corrupted his son.  He would not have a "" in the house.  Wookeun was torn from his dreams of music schools in London and shipped off to Seoul so his grandparents could "straighten him out."

He spent about a week there, less really.  They tried to pour fanatacism and homophobia down his throat, but perhaps the western world had changed him.  He didn't buy it.  So he ran away from home.  It shouldn't have hurt when no one looked for him, but it did.  He assumed his family must have been happy to be rid of him.  He managed to afford a appartment on a nasty side of town and began singing in local dives to make ends-meat.  He spent more of his money on booze than food.  His alcoholism led him to way more casual than he ever thought he was capable of.  His life was spiralling out of control, and his dreams became more and more distant and unreachable.

He would have given up completely, but then one night after a set a woman with badly-dyed blonde hair came up to him.  She handed him a card for MSP3L Entertaiment, an up-and-coming agency that was holding open auditions at the moment.  She told him she saw his potential and wanted him to audition.  The furvor of his dreams rushed through him and he agreed immediately.  He was accepted right at the audition.  Initially he was nervous.  He didn't have the trainee experience like many of his new peers.  But, he decided, he had something they didn't: his voice.

During a bout of strep throat in 2011, a doctor told Wookeun that if he was pushing his voice too hard.  If he kept up, there was a very good chance he could do permenant damage to his vocal chords, and perhaps ultimately lose it completely.  He didn't tell anyone about this, he couldn't.  His voice was his identity, and he wasn't going to let the words of some quack doctor change his dream.  The thought creeps into the back of his mind sometimes, and frightens him.  So he continues to ignore it, holding it deep inside as his darkest secret.

(Personality)
Wookeun tends to be socially awkward.  Having no real friends the majority of his life and little-to-no familial interactions, his social graces are undeveloped.  He can be very professional with people, but doesn't really know how to have a friendship.  The only close relationship in his life was predominately physical, so he picked up very little on how to handle people from it.  He likes very much to keep to himself and definitely keeps people at an arms length.  But he's not cold, not in the slightest.  He's very cordial with people as long as he doesn't have to get too close to them.  Then he freezes up, and often times will find himself stuttering and tripping over words.  He doesn't know how to be "friends," only how to have a professional relationship.

He can be a very helpful human being.  If someone is kind to him, they'll find that they can push him into almost anything (so long as it doesn't risk damaging his precious voice).  He'll often do more then his share so long as he's asked.  The word "no" is hard to come-by in his vocabulary, so long as the question is posed with kindness.  However, if you're cold or mean to him, he completely closes up.  He won't even speak.  Deep down inside he's an alltrusitic person who likes helping people.  He's very even-tempered, and his agitation takes the form of backhanded comments rather than screaming or violence.  He has no shame about being blunt with people and can be dificult to get along with because of it.  It's not his fault, really, he just has no experience on how to word things delicately or understanding of how his words can make people feel.

Wookeun can be a bit of a perfectionist, especially when it comes to music.  Thanks to his synesthesia, he's hyper aware of wrong noted and will immediately attempt to correct the other vocalists.  He won't accept less than the best because he believes he is.  Subconciously, he's after acceptance and recognition that he's never recieved from his family.  He thinks that by being a successful musician, the acceptance and recognition of his fans will fill that void.

There is one thing that Wookeun is incredibly prideful about: his voice.  He's never had anyone criticize his vocal skills, quite the contrary.  Even his parents, who disliked the idea of him pursuing music, still enjoyed his voice.  It's inflated his ego a little, in that regard.  He doesn't view himself as particularly attractive, or coordinated when it comes to dancing, but he believes himself to have one of the best voices period.  It causes him to be rather curt with other vocalists, intrinsically believing them to be inferior to himself.  On stage Wookeun has adopted the "diva" personality type for the band, mostly coming from his precieved vocal superiority to the other members and his penchant for girl songs.

Wookeun is also an incredibly determined human being.  He's only ever broken one time in his life, when he ran away from his grandparents' house.  Other then that one time, he knew what he wanted and went for it.  He pours his all into one thing, and often times becomes blinded to the things around it.  He has a habit of pushing himself too hard and risking potential damage to his body.

Character Relationships

(Family Members)
♫ Hwang Kangdae | Father | 50 | Kangdae is a man's man.  That's been the definition of his life since he was born.  He rules the house with an iron fist, his word is law.  He's an investment broker in London, and makes a good living for his stay at home wife and three children.  He never paid much attention to Wookeun or his sister, the oldest son was always the apple of his eye.  An incredibly conservative man, who disliked the influence of the west on his family, so he mandated a Korean-only household, and made sure his kids spent as much of their summers as possible in Seoul with his parents.  Since sending Wookeun away, his youngest son hasn't even crossed his mind.  To him, Wookeun is dead.

♫ Hwang Minhi | Mother | 49 | Less conservative then her husband in terms of her beliefs, but completely bows to his will in all matters.  She is a traditional house wife and home maker and wouldn't dare oppose the status quo.  She's a well read woman, and she made sure her children were as well.  She's a very loving woman, and was initially supportive of Wookeun.  But she ultimately bowed to her husbands whims in not supporting Wookeun's music or his uality.  She cries when she's alone over the not knowing where her son is.

♫ Hwang Sunhi | Sister | 27 | A medical genius, Sunhi was working on her doctorate in pediactric oncology the last time Wookeun saw her.  She was completely devoted to her studies and her clique of like-minded friends.  She was straight laced and had no time to be helping her kid brother.  She moved out as soon as she could, and Wookeun barely saw her after that.  They're not close, before Wookeun ran away they talked on the phone maybe once a year.

♫ Hwang Myungdae | Brother | 27 | Preped from birth to follow in his father's footsteps, Myungdae is a ruthless investment broker rising his way up the ranks.  Like his twin sister, he was never around much for Wookeun.  He's a rampant, unrepenent womanizer.  Everytime Wookeun saw his brother there was a different woman on his arm.  The two brothers never much got along, Myungdae always mirrored his father's sentiments toward his passion for music.

♫ Hwang Sangook | Grandfather | 85 (died in 2010) | As straightlaced as his son, with some religious fanaticism thrown in.  He spent all of his free time at their local church and left his wife to take care of the grandchildren when they were visiting.  He was disgusted by Wookeun and tried to book him into a "pray the gay away" camp at the church before he ran away.  He treated the incident as the right thing, and was reportedly very glad that Wookeun ran away.  He maintained this until the day he died.

♫ Hwang Eunkyung | Grandmother | 83 | A repressed woman who learned to just keep shut.  Speaking out often got her hit, and so over time she just grew accustomed to sitting in the background.  Even when she didn't agree.  She was horrifed at her husband's treatment of Wookeun, but was even more horrified of her lack of trying to stop it.  She's a woman filled with regrets.  She's one of the only people Wookeun ever met who was unconditional with their love, and he barely got to taste any of it.  Ever since her husband died she's tried to track down Wookeun to apologize.

(First Friend)

♫ Jung Jessica | SNSD | Backstage after their debut stage, Jessica introduced herself and complimented his vocals, especially for a rookie.  This was the start of a friendship, his first relationship outside of the band.  He's not entirely sure how to handle himself around her, but she doesn't seem to mind it.  Most of their relationship is her doing the talking.  Gushing about cute boys, talking about Japan or America or wherever SNSD happens to be going next, complaining about other members (In English, sometimes he thinks she picked him simply so she could rant to someone in a language most of the people around them couldn't understand).  He mostly just nodds and listens, though as time passes he gets more comfortable being able to talk around her.

(Love Interest 1)
♫ Park Chanyeol | EXO-K | Wookeun meets Chanyeol thanks to Jessica.  One day she takes him to lunch at the SM building, where they quite literally run into each other.  Chanyeol's complete and utter giddiness is foriegn to him, and it doesn't take long to develop an infatuation.  They text constantly, and it takes far less time then normal for Wookeun to start to feel comfortable around Chanyeol.  He even picks up some of his growing library of social graces from Chanyeol, like smiling.  For better or worse.  He's unsure how Chanyeol feels about him, but he's happy to have him as a friend at least, and tries in vain to downplay the growing feelings he has for the tall rapper.

(Love Interest 2)
♫ Kris | EXO-M | Once again, Wookuen met Kris thanks to Jessica (he'll need to remember to send her a fruit basket or flowers or something). He's immediately phyiscally attracted to him from across the cafe he and Jessica are eating in.  Of course, she calls him over to introduce them once she sees it on his face.  Kris is far more reserved and nicer then Wookeun would have guessed from his icey -face.  The communicate mostly in English, since Kris seems insecure about his Korean.  Wookeun had never been so physically attracted to someone in his life, although, he's not quite sure what his emotions are saying.  They don't talk that often, and usually it's fairly mundane stuff, but seeing his face always sets Wookeun's body on fire.
