Which do you think would help me improve my writing skills?

I'm writing a story, which I guess could be consider as my first one, and I would sometimes get to the points where my mind just go blank and no matter how hard I tried I just couldn't think of the next plot for it. And then sometimes, out of the blue, I would think of completely unrelated ideas for a different plot of story which does not help. I'm sure we all do and that might explains the ongoing stories some of you may have.

So often I'd think that instead of struggling thinking for plots on this one (the one that I'm currently dealing with), why not start another story with the new ideas I just had and make myself happier and less stressed? I mean I could always come back if I ever think of the next part, right?

But on the other hand, there was another voice in my head telling me not to. It said because if I start another one without completing the first one, wouldn't the same thing happen again? Then by the time I realize, I'd ended up with a whole bunch of incompleted stories and that would get me mixed up and out of controlled.

Maybe this is just me but I've noticed a lot of great writters (some might not be quite famous on here but are great great great) have completed at least a story or two. Now I know this question may sounds silly and unprofessional but, does it make you write better since you actually experienced writing a series once or twice? How you have to finish doing something first before moving on. Or writing another story? Which will ease your mind for now and maybe you can come back once it hits you. Actually, those were two questions weren't they? Sorry but I'm kind of on the fence right now... I'm trying to figure out which one is really going to help me improve. What do you think?
