ming xin considers himself a nice person. he genuinely cares about people, no matter who, and is always willing to help them with their troubles or struggles if he can. due to his unique background, he understands, to some extent, many hardships that other people go through and often tries to make them feel better. he also has a knack for noticing things that other people might not, like body language and tone inflections, which causes him to understand how someone is feeling at some point in time. in addition, he is not the type to just abandon someone; if he's made a promise, he will follow through no matter what, and he'll do his part to the best of his abilities. he doesn't know the definition of 'giving up' and will always put forth his best effort into anything he does.

however, he is sensitive about criticism and comments about himself, and he'll often be down if he hears such comments. he tries not to be the mood spoiler, but oftentimes, he'll overthink something innocent that someone else said to him or about him and let that tiny comment ruin his entire day. as someone who grew up as an adoptive child with a brother who didn't really like him, ming xin can be a bit self-sacrificing. he knows that he should put his priorities and well-being first, but he can't help but to sacrifice himself for others, which sometimes makes other members annoyed or concerned. he is also barely an adult who only wants the best for everyone, so he gets scammed quite a lot since he doesn't realize that sometimes, life is just out to get him. he believes that the world is generally good and is often disappointed when things don't turn out the way he expects it to.

he is also shy and doesn't often talk to strangers unless he has to. this, in addition to his resting face, causes people to assume that he's antisocial or cold, when in reality, he's the exact opposite and wants to be friends with others. even when he makes friends, he often doesn't share his deepest thoughts and feelings with them because he doesn't feel like they can help or he doesn't want to bother them (even though they might be able to help and/or be willing to help).

BACKGROUND

the first few years of ming xin's life were perfectly fine and normal. in fact, it was probably better than most other kids'. his parents, being older than usual when they had him, tended to spoil him and give him whatever he wanted. however, this utopian life would come crashing down when ming xin was five, he and his parents were involved in a horrific car accident where a drunk driver crashed into their car. his parents both died, and ming xin spent a long time in the hospital.

because his maternal grandparents were dead and his paternal grandparents were too old to take care of a young child, plus neither of his parents had siblings, ming xin was about to go to an orphanage. however, at this time, his father's friend from college swooped in, paying off his hospital fees and adopting him. his adoptive parents were good people and made sure that ming xin could keep everything from his real parents, as well as all of the money that they left behind, but still, after this total upheaval in his life, ming xin became a completely different person. he became quiet and careful, no longer able to be a spoiled and happy child. having to live with a new family definitely didn't help, and what made it worse was that he now had an older adoptive brother.

at first, his adoptive brother thought that it was fun having a new brother, but soon, he realized that his loving parents were putting all of their attention and love into this new kid. of course, being eight years old already, he knew that ming xin had just been through a lot of trauma, but as a kid, it was hard for him to just accept it without complaints. this led to him being mean to ming xin a lot, including pretending like he didn't exist, not letting him play with any toys, not letting him watch TV, stealing his food, etc.

of course, their parents put a stop to this behavior right away and demanded that he get along with ming xin. the brothers existed in a weird awkward harmony for a couple of years. when Adoptive Brother turned 10, his parents bought him a piano and enrolled him in piano lessons. however, two years later, they enrolled ming xin in the same lessons, and Brother suddenly felt jealous again. why could he get everything i got? why couldn't i just get something to myself? so tensions rose between them again.

when Brother is 15, he joins his high school choir and decides that he really wants to be a singer in the future. though ming xin secretly had the same dream, he wanted to repair their relationship, so he didn't ask to take singing lessons with him. instead, he starts to go on the internet and learn singing techniques from videos. around this time, with help from the korean lessons mentioned in the languages section, ming xin gets into kpop and begins to try to learn how to dance. along with friends from school, he forms a kpop dance cover channel that ends up really popular, which triggers another wave of jealousy from Brother.

three years later, Brother goes to college away from home to study music, and ming xin finally works up the courage to ask parents if he can take singing lessons too. after a few lessons, however, he realizes that he doesn't like singing but rap instead. he tells his parents about his dream, which is to be a kpop star, but they don't believe that rap is music, nor do they want another child to go into the entertainment industry (especially so far away in korea), but they strike a deal with him: if he gets into a college in korea, they'll let him audition for entertaiment companies and become a trainee as long as he promises to graduate from college.

in march of 2021, he gets into kyunghee cyber university for the specific reason that it's a cyber university and gives him a lot of flexibility, studying linguistics. though his parents were a bit mad that he sort of cheated the system, they fulfilled their promise and gave him the freedom to audition for companies. in june, he immediately moved to korea, auditioned for, and failed the auditions for SM and JYP. however, when going back to his rental house one day, he decided to audition for a.den on a whim. to his surprise (and his parents' surprise!), he actually got in!

ming xin's feelings towards his adoptive brother are conflicted; on one hand, he really admires him and would like to be as close as real brothers, but on the other hand, he knows that he 'stole' away his loving parents and feels guilty about it. they have not spoken since shi kai left for college, since he never comes back to visit home, not even when ming xin moved to korea. nonetheless, because shi kai has became a singer and ming xin has also set his sight on that goal, he is hoping that one day, they can both become famous musicians and resolve their differences.

ming xin is very afraid that his brother, still holding a grudge against him for 'stealing' away his life, will 'expose' him or make up fake rumors in order to drag him down and prevent him from becoming a singer as well. however, these fears are unfounded as shi kai no longer hates ming xin; besides, doing something like that is just awful.

tldr: they both secretly hope that they can repair their relationship but neither of them is making the first move because they're both afraid that the other will hate him.

lin wenhao / 20 / best friend / 9/10 / fc: nct's renjun

wenhao is ming xin's best friend at normal school and at korean language school. as an ethnic korean, wenhao was the one who introduced ming xin to kpop in the first place, as well as the other founding member of their kpop dance cover group. he is currently living in china and going to university, but he tries his best to keep up with ming xin despite both of their busy lives.

shi daman, jin xihui / 55, 53 / adoptive parents / 8/10 / fcs: chinese singer wang feng and chinese actress zhang ziyi

as ming xin's adoptive parents, they are always very worried about him and his well-being. though they tried not to coddle him, they ended up unwittingly giving him more leeway during his childhood, which messed up their relationship with their biological son. they video-call ming xin as much as they can and are always looking out for his news. they hope to reconcile their relationship with their biological son and also hope that the brothers will one day reconnect as well.

moon song was ming xin's first friend at a.den. when he first joined the company, ming xin was too shy to speak to anyone and especially unwilling to ask anyone for help. moon song approached him, having noticed his struggles, and offered to help him with improving his dance skills. ming xin soon grew close to him, and though he quickly became friends with the other trainees as well, moon song will always be a special friend to him.

ming xin had a fairly good background in vocal and rap and a foundation in dance before joining a.den. however, since he only ever self-learned dance, he needed to be taught the correct way to dance. it was really hard for him to adjust at first since old habits die hard, and he was reluctant to ask other trainees for help, so he just practiced over and over until he was so tired he could barely stay awake. eventually, though, moon song approached him, and he became friends with the rest of the other trainees too.

at a.den, ming xin focused mostly on improving his dancing, but he also learned how to rap better. in addition, because he needed to learn more korean, he took korean classes at a.den as well. he struggles with nerves sometimes, which can make his facial expressions boring, but he's working on it.

yes! i really look up to jay chou, i've been listening to his songs ever since i was a child-- oh, but i guess he's not a kpop idol? in the kpop industry, my biggest idol and role model is jackson-sunbaenim. he started out as an athlete but came to korea to pursue his dreams, giving up everything he already had, and i really admire his courage and strength to be able to do that, so every time i feel like i want to give up and go home, i just think of jackson and suddenly i have the courage to keep moving!
