☉ OK JONGHYUK IS AT PEARL CENTER

the phone is propped up against his water bottle, the call slowly connecting as the wheel spins under a contact affectionately titled "mom💛💛" and its accompanying contact photo. she's a bit younger there. standing in their old kitchen, she's laughing and mixing side dishes for dinner with one hand. the other is (unsuccessfully) blocking the camera.

when she finally loads on his phone, her image is grainy and slow moving. her roots have grown in more. her crow's feet are deeper when she smiles. at least that much feels timeless.

"hi dear, how are you?"

her familiar voice washes over the walls of his new apartment. nostalgia erupts in the pit of his chest. he wants to go home now more than ever. he's — "doing great, mom. how are you?"

the conversation flows into familiar territory. his mom chatters about the kids — jiwoo should go to college soon, byungwook's struggling with math, hyejung hasn't called in weeks, and "when will you be home? for good, not just to visit again."

"just few more months." he laughs lightly. his fingers fiddle with the edge of the comforter he's seated on. "i was thinking of visiting next weekend, actually."

"oh my! and how's that girl doing, by the way? eunji, was it? bring her with you!"

and just as he's about to tell her that no, it was eunwoo, and she's not around anymore, not as of yesterday night, a distant voice calls "mom!"

it's byungwook, sprinting in and barely batting an eyelash at his older brother. he's rushing their mom up, out. they're already late to an appointment at... somewhere. the tail end of byungwook's teenage tirade is cut off by a hasty goodbye and the resounding end dial.

jonghyuk's in the middle of blankly staring at his recent calls list when his door bursts open to reveal his eager roommate. he pulls a smile from jonghyuk with just a glance. he's always been able to.

"aye," he says, widely grinning, "you finally done? we're heading out now."

FULL NAME ok jonghyuk.
OTHER NAMES
the ok's first sonthere are few who don't know of the first son of the ok family. he's responsible, sociable, healthy, perfect: the epitome of a desirable son and heir to the family business. he walks through the streets of simdong and greets everyone respectfully. he asks the right questions — how is your knee feeling now? did the ointment work well? — and was the boy all the neighborhood aunties tried to set their daughters up with.

BIRTHDATE 0123, 25.
ETHNICITY korean.

GENDER man.
UALITY biual.
FACECLAIM wonho.

STATURE 178cm.
APPEARANCE originally perceived as the lanky boy at the doctor's office, jonghyuk has since filled out. frequent trips to the gym post-military service have kept him in shape. now, he'd be almost unrecognizeable if it weren't for the comfortable, warm atmosphere that still surrounds him.

now back in simdong, he stands taller thanks to a growth spurt in university. he's prouder too, but what of he's not entirely sure yet. it's not like jonghyuk has much time to deliberate anyway. he's back to work soon after his return, the stench of the city soon reverting to the all-too-familiar herbal scent of simdong's clinic — home.

STYLE since leaving, jonghyunk's grown out of his childhood clothes. size small graphic tees and baggy jeans are buried at the botttom of his closet. now, he sports solid collared button-downs in muted tones with fitted jeans. he wears loafers and brandishes a silver watch on his left wrist. a pair of circular glasses sit on the bridge of his nose in place of the an older, rectangular frame abandoned on his bedside table.

above all, jonghyuk desires stability. externally, he's achieved that and more: his bed is always made the same way, his clothes are folded methodically and stored by color, and the medicinal cabinets back home are still kept the way he reorganized them before he left. he's always been perfect in this way. he's the epitome of responsible — the aunties always said so, jonghyuk always glowed in response. he's steady, unchanging, ready to take over his father's position at the clinic at the slightest signal.

and yet, he returns to simdong feeling different. he's experienced more in a few years than he could ever try to describe in words: intense loneliness, simple joys —  everything in between. he tells himself it's enough for a lifetime, but desire is never so easily compromisable. he buries his desire under anger to retain childhood ideals.

he falls back into old habits upon his return. he goes back to working from dawn to dusk at his family's clinic. he's praised by the neighborhood as the most filial son and he beams at the praise. but now he seeks validation with fervor. always deemed the best son by simdong, jonghyuk puts his way of life on a pedestal. he criticizes those that don't follow his vision. perhaps, deep down, he knows that this is not where he belongs. but he's told himself over and over that it'll be easy to get lost in the flow of simdong again. he's always been pushed afloat here; no where else is he so dearly loved.

BACKGROUND as a child, jonghyuk is always seen at his father's heels. he joins in on in-house visits, listens quietly, and asks questions in rapt attention on the walk home. he becomes his father's prodigal son. he learns the medicine assortment and each herb's effect quickly. he does chores so his mom can focus on taking care of his three younger siblings; he looks after his younger siblings so his mom can get a day off. parsing cabinets for a prescribed medicine while his dad is with a patient is fun, but it's much more gratifying when someone thanks him for taking care of them and their family. this clinic, this home, this town, simdong is where he belongs — he feels this deep in his veins.

and yet, when he's about to graduate high school, his parents ask if him he wants to attend university. while he's reluctant at first, he figures that any medicinal knowledge can only help his family and simdong in the future. it takes him a year after high school to leave: he's fretting over the state of his family, the order of the clinic's inventory, and he's sure he has more to learn from his father before he goes out and learns more. his first year at chonnam national university, although just over an hour from home, is lonely. he enlists in the military the following year and is stationed in busan. by the time he comes back, he looks different. he feels a bit different, too.

he enjoys the next three years at cnu. he finds his friends, falls in and out of love, and he's happy for the first time since leaving. but even as he packs his college memories into boxes, he notes that home is in simdong. nothing, not the chill in the ocean air nor the uncertainty in his chest, can waver his resolve.

LIFESTYLE
in gwangju, jonghyuk was living with two close friends in an apartment near campus. he attended all his classes on time and had a part time job working as a medical scribe at chonnam national university hwasun hospital. he scheduled time to hit the gym every other day with his roommates before going out to get food. on nights where none of them have early morning commitments, the three of them would meet up with their larger group of friends at bars to eat and drink.

while living gwangju, jonghyuk tried to go home to simdong at least once a month. his trips home would be during the weekends when he had friday shifts off at the hospital. visits were much more frequent during his first two years of university, but the time between visits has increased as jonghyuk's social circle expanded. now that he's in his last year, he hasn't gone home in a few months — he's been busy preparing for graduation and making his last few memories with friends.

in simdong,he wakes up at 6am to prepare the clinic for the day, sometimes earlier if a shipment is supposed to arrive that day. he spends the first hour reorganizing the inventory, cleaning up the treatment rooms, and packing away medicines for the first scheduled patients of the day. even then, he feels time works too slow as he waits for the next patient to arrive. his main task is guiding them to the treatment room where his father is waiting and distributing the medicine as the patient leaves. his father waiting in the treatment room poised as always, pleasant as always. it's no wonder that his father's the preferred doctor for their regular in-house patients. jonghyuk hasn't been around for very long now; it's been 6 years after all.

the most enjoyable part of his day is arguably when he heads to the tea shop to talk to  yugyeong and relax. she has the his favorite tea ready soon after he gets there. it's late, the shop has cleared out, and they sit and talk about their days.

TRIVIA
🍂 attended chonnam national university's gwangju campus with a major in biological sciences. when he first arrived in gwangju, he lived at a goshiwon. he later moved into an apartment with friends his senior year.
🍂 his whole life, jonghyuk studied acupuncture charts for pressure points and read up on the medicines in the clinic. he watched patients leave with a smile on their face and gratitude for his father. jonghyuk believes his treading in his father's footsteps. yet, he sees the same expressions on the faces of patients at leaving cnu's hospital as he works there. those patients come in, more ill than those at home, and leave in varying states of satisfaction. when he speaks with his supervisors and other staff, it leaves him wondering if what he's always known is enough to satisfy him. he's sure that his knowledge is enough to help simdong, but he wonders if there are other places where his skills could be valued.
🍂 the ok family's clinic is well-respected around town. they're known for being level-headed, kind, and gracious to every patient they've had. regardless of the issue, the doctor and his family have been considerate with patients and done their best to treat them. this perception barely changed as jonghyuk grew older. he's always been the son of the highly-praised doctor.
🍂 he learned to swim when he was young. while he isn't the fastest swimmer, he has a lot of stamina.
🍂 had good grades growing up. this led to further praise and contributed to jonghyuk's status as a golden boy.
🍂 got his driver's license in gwangju. he didn't own a car but rented one when his friend group went on trips outside of gwangju. he would be the designated driver if his friends needed one, but that wasn't the case due to gwangju's bus system.

jonghyuk looks after yeji when they're younger. her parents asked him to take care of her as a favor — their families were close and yeji was always in the habit of getting into trouble. growing up, she's one of the few playmates he remembers well. watching yeji bound down the street from the inn, snacks in hand and a big smile gracing her face, remains among his fondest memories.

she idolizes him growing up. he views her as a family friend to look after. he does notice her crush on him, never commenting on it, and lets it fade by the time they depart for university. contact fades in those years, save for a few birthday texts.

their reunion is sweet and exciting at first — they've changed externally and he's glad to see she's grown more cautious — but as he begins catching on to her crass nature, it fuels his own. he's not used to this yeji. he makes it known by lecturing her the bridges she's burning by leaving: with her parents, with simdong, with him. he doesn’t understand why she doesn’t stay. to jonghyuk, yeji always belonged here.

she retaliates with anger. she reduces her visits to the clinic and begins hanging out with jisung. and while jonghyuk finds himself spending more and more time with yugyeong, the worry he has for yeji never fully fades away.

like clockwork, a younger jonghyuk followed his dad to the tea shop after work every day and played with yugyeong. as they get older, they grow closer. jonghyuk loves her tea. he goes there every day to listen to her ramble. she lands between a friend and a sister. he's not quite sure exactly where she lands, but he's sure of the fact that they're constants in each other's lives.

he's there when her dad leaves, a sturdy arm wrapped around her. he's been like that ever since — a stable pillar in her life — and it's easy for yugyeong to rely on him. he's patient with her. and, unlike others their age, they have the same undying devotion to their family, the same loyalty to simdong, the same love for tradition. when he leaves for gwangju, he assures her he'll come back in a few years. he keeps his promise.

she doesn't recognize him the first time he comes back during a military break. it's a physical boundary at first — he's filled out much more, no longer the scrawny boy she knew — but the more he visits, the more distant he feels. and despite the frequent visits jonghyuk pays to the tea shop once he's home for good, things don't feel the same anymore.

they're born in the same winter, only a few weeks apart, and the differing states of infant health draws the attention of the whole town. jonghyuk is strong and healthy; jiho is born premature and frail. to the residents of simdong, the older child took all the luck that winter.

after a few years, jonghyuk and jiho are set up as infant playmates. but as they grow older, jonghyuk enrolls in school first and leaves jiho behind. they grow apart, but their friendship lives in the town's memories. they're compared by simdong —  quietly at first and louder later. they're the same age, born less than a month apart, and yet jonghyuk is strong. he's responsible for part of his family's business while jiho plays around the kang family restaurant.

these words reach jonghyuk's ears during home visits. his patients tell him he's much stronger and more dependable jiho. jonghyuk barely remembers jiho anyway, so he takes the rumors as compliments to his character. even after returning to simdong for good, his only memories of jiho are that of jiho's grandma  — walking into the clinic and asking for an herb to help her grandson's condition.

🍂 parents
ok hyungsik (57) & shin hyewon (53)
like the rest of simdong, jonghyuk's parents commend jonghyuk to no end. he's their golden boy. the love and admiration runs both ways — jonghyuk admires his father and adores his mother. however, the adoration of his parents comes with both a gift and a burden. he's always felt the clinic looming in his immediate future. in his parents' eyes, jonghyuk needed to explore more, take the chance learn more at university, and come back to live in simdong, where he's always belonged, as a worldly man.

🍂 siblings
hyejung (21f), jiwon (19f), byungwook (14m)
while their parents were busy, jonghyuk raised his younger siblings. he's closest to hyejung, he wouldn't say he feels close to any of them. to all his siblings, but to byungwook especially, jonghyuk's existence has always felt more like a parent than a brother. he played with them and took them to school to ease the burden on their parents. while he loves his siblings to no end, he's felt that leaving for university was a relief.

hyejung is at korea university studying education. jiwon is home to study for university exams while wanting to take a chance at running the clinic. byungwook is in middle school.
