act i: once upon a time

jinwoo is born just past midnight to a loving couple as a surprise valentine's gift. he grows up happy and healthy, his small hand carefully guided by his parents' to trace letters of the alphabet and handle the different plants growing in his home and the flower shop that his parents run. he absorbs meanings and color patterns like a sponge, grinning every time his parents compliment him for learning so fast, a kind encouragement that encourages his calm hours of study.

jinwoo becomes a common sight and sound at the shop when not at school, his voice ringing in song down the aisles of green with a smile as bright as the sun and, according to his parents, equally necessary for the flowers to bloom. he believes them and grins at the faux forest until he is eight when both his parents die in a fire that takes both the home and shop while he is at school. he cries, tears falling into the lone surviving pot like rain rather than the sun of his smile.

act ii: there was a tragedy

jinwoo goes to his aunt and uncle's home - his new home - with one plant after a week in a foster house. they welcome him with open arms for the night and leave him alone the next week, too poor and too busy to take more time off work. he is, they tell him, in charge of his younger cousins - twins - and should have no problem since he's now "a big brother" to them. his cousins do not immediately respect him, but he learns just as he learned floriography before.

jinwoo is left in charge more and more as his aunt and uncle work to feed hungry mouths, especially with the addition of his own. what little free time his aunt and uncle do manage goes to their own kids, and though jinwoo doesn't begrudge them, he finds himself naturally fading into the background before others can relegate him there. he still cares for the surviving plant and sings, but the memories of tall plants fade to a single pot as he hums quietly under his breath.

act iii: but they lived...

jinwoo graduates from high school and moves out within the week. street-casted while in school, he begins his modeling job right away - complete with food and board. he's mildly successful, never quite out of work but always on the search for work as well. he is, however, still not the first priority in anyone's life; even his manager works with several other, more successful models. he sings still, and another model tells him his voice is idol-worthy. his mind lingers on it.

training background

after a year of modeling, jinwoo becomes a trainee under imagine ent while juggling several part-time jobs to pay for his own food and housing. while training, singing came to him naturally and was never a problem. during that time, he became known for a few other things amongst the trainees.

the first was more humorous as his birthday, on valentine's, jokingly became "confess to jinwoo" day as people would gift him chocolate, because poor trainees and chocolate sales. on white day, jinwoo buys large bags of marshmallows to give out in reply, which becomes "rejection from jinwoo" day.

the second is due to his average ability at dance. he becomes a common sight in practice rooms as he dances for hours, learning and memorizing. they find out that jinwoo likes to dance songs at double speed for more dances done per hour and stamina practice. he is dubbed the "stamina monster."

(what happens is that one day, a fellow trainee comes in to see jinwoo dancing a song at double speed. he does three more songs that way with concert-worthy expressions and fan service to the mirror. when asked if he's tired, he replies that he does it all the time and is fine. cue astonishment.)

predebut experiences

modeling: the year before his trainee years, he was a model at a local busan agency. most of his jobs were for fashion magazines or the catwalk (where he learned to strut), but he also was in a cf - or rather, his hand was; it was a lotion advertised as "perfect for your boyfriend" (aka his hand).

future experiences

acting: starts as a single-episode character in a kdrama but eventually progresses to more important characters until he even once did a lead role. has had all kinds of roles but tends to play characters with tragedies in their backstory or who are geniuses. (once was praised for looking good hurt.)

musicals: because of his stamina, voice, and acting ability, also started starring in musicals. older musical actors and actresses actually have their eye on him and want to snatch him from the kdrama scene entirely. does less of these after the hanahaki because there are no second takes for these.

side note: never stars in more than two "shows" - musical or acting - at once. his company originally organized it as one at a time because that's the limit for most others, mentally and physically. some kind of mix-up happened where he did two together once but was fine so the limit became two.

scandals / news articles

even idols get hanahaki?!: follow the petals on stage, there were numerous articles about the incident. after, there were also countless guesses as to who he had hanahaki for. most of the guesses were female idols he had interacted with or his labelmates. let's just say that their guesses were wrong.

faking hanahaki for attention?: one news outlet thought, because the red roses were too much of a cliche, that jinwoo was faking the hanahaki for publicity. they faced a lot of backlash - fans, other idols, even other news outlets - for the callous accusation. later, they officially apologized for it.

"hello," he returns, smiling charmingly at the young interviewer. he leans foward, showing interest in the conversation, and makes sure to make eye contact.

olympus has just won song of the year. how do you feel:

"to be honest, it feels surreal," he answers with a soft, contented sigh, eyes shifting to the side in swift remembrance to the stage and the award - to the warm crush of bodies, more than familiar, around him.

how has your relationship with the other members of olympus changed over your time as a group:

he pauses here, hand coming up to rub his lips absent-mindedly with his thumb. as much as it's true, he should not say what he had expected and how he had first seen them - simple business relations based on either mutual monetary or social popularity need. "i think in the beginning, we were all strangers trying to see how our ceos thought we would fit," he puts both honestly yet carefully, his tone not at all betraying his inner monologue. "now, we're a family, and we can't imagine our lives without each other."

who are you closest to and least close to in olympus:

"that's a hard question," he states, earning a quick bark of laughter from the interviewer. he his lips as the question is pressed further until he must answer the inquiry. "if i am forced to choose, i'd say i'm closest to hachirou - that is, tachi. we spend most of our free time together, and he's a piece of sunshine. least...i'd have to say [argent]. for some reason, we can't seem to spend time together recently, because our schedules are opposite. maybe our ceos will see this interview, and let us have a day to catch up." the interviewer smiles indulgently at the joke, turning to the camera with a jokingly scolding comment before eventually turning back to him with a new question.

you were revealed to have hanahaki disease earlier this year after an incident onstage. do you have anything to say about that:

his smile is a little more brittle, something he allows because it is, he thinks with relief, expected. it is also, he adds in his thoughts with ambivalence, the truth. "i just want to apologize for going on stage while ill. it was unprofessional of me to do so. i also want to thank all the olympus fans who have been supportive of olympus all this time and worried for my health."

you have been revealed to be undergoing treatment for hanahaki. how's that been going:

"it's a work-in-progress," he answers as told, keeping his jaw from clenching though in truth there is none. medication to halt it from growing, yes. but the very possibility of surgery? none. though he is the one at the risk of death - the one with headaches and the nausea; the one suffering from constant exhaustion, cramps, aches, and dizziness; the one dealing with shortness of breath and cough due to the flower in his lungs - all on top of going about his usual idol jobs - the songs, dances, shows, and all that's in between - with a smile like the longest and most extreme and most goddamn difficult test of his acting abilities, the company had been firm and told him not to. part of him revels in the attention - being the company's first priority (being someone's first priority for once) - but a larger part wonders if it's worth it, if this is what he really wanted. his face shows nothing except serene professionalism and, understandably, awkwardness for the given questions. the interviewer moves on at the short and undeniably simple (boring) answer.

what's next for olympus? new music? maybe album of the year:

he grins genuinely at the topic of olympus, people who he loves and is grateful for. "if we can, i think album of the year is a goal we can reach for. i'm not sure if the company is preparing us for another song yet, but i'll announce it on my twitter when i find out," he informs with a kind smile, hiding a smirk at the gleam in the interviewer's eye at the "hint" of a "leak."

"happy to be here. i had a wonderful time," he says smoothly, the lie flowing like butter off his tongue.

jinwoo's favorite flower

hydrangeas: on top of its natural beauty, he enjoys that there are so many possible meanings for them, some of which are contradicting. thinks, in a way, that it's a flower only given from and to people who both know floriography and are close to understand what message is being sent.

the hanahaki love

a veteran model who took jinwoo under his wing when he joined the modeling company. friendly guy who makes people feel important when talking to them. genuinely good guy as a whole but just isn't as close to people as he seems (aka jinwoo gets hit with his own bad traits-medicine later).

for some time, jinwoo thought that maybe byunjoong would become the person who would put him first, because he did as the model sunbae. however, once jinwoo decided to be an idol, he figured their friendship would fade with the time, distance, and busyness. it didn't quite work out that way.

byunjoong never failed to answer a text and occasionally checked up on jinwoo - just enough that jinwoo knew the older model cared - but one day sent a photo text; it was all of olympus's albums and a huge poster of jinwoo, asking for jinwoo to sign it all. jinwoo gets a crush soonthereafter.

(jinwoo doesn't know it then, but byunjoong gets all of the merch for his secret girlfriend - who was a fan of olympus, specifically jinwoo. though byunjoong wasn't going to tell anyone about his sg anyways, imagine - when jinwoo tells them who it's for - orders him to not reveal his relationship.

it's through the press that the sg is found out about, though neither byunjoong nor sg were told the truth as to why they couldn't get found out. jinwoo loses his hanahaki right when the modeling company, which was under imagine, admitted to knowing about the relationship and supporting it.

his anger at the company aside, jinwoo is also hit with the realization that he had been doing what byunjoong had done to him but to olympus, being distant with the illusion of closeness. if he's more honest and tries to be without pretense around them, well, it's just coincidence, ok?)

the hanahaki flower(s) red roses (aka the cliche)

the strain

strain c, but marketed as strain a (to excuse his lack of surgery and the continuing petals). isn't sure which of the two c-strains it could be, as even the doctor was unsure.

side note: can still be the one who collapses later - whether due to his symptoms or due to it being a c-2 strain.

the development

it starts out as a tickle, causing him to clear his throat often for a few weeks. it develops into petals soon thereafter, just small ones that are easy to tuck into pockets and flush down toilets later, out of sight. it takes a few months before he can not hold back the cough, before the on-stage incident.

(prior to the incident, he'd been perfect at hiding it, still undecided on what to do, especially since it was so new; he figured it'd go away soon. any coughs people caught - few and far in between - only earned a reminder to watch his health with the upcoming winter season; he just agreed.)

from there, it only seems to progress. the petals become full on flowers as byunjoong texts more often with worry over his "favorite model-turned-idol." with it, comes shortness of breath as the coughs grow in frequency and volume (and without a need to hide it from olympus) within the week.

another week passes before he gets a dizzy spell, which soon becomes constant. it comes with nausea and a growing ache in his bones that won't leave. he cramps and aches all over his body as his head pounds. the first time he coughs up blood with flora, he finally cries and asks olympus to help.

side note: the blood can be a further sign of c-2 or can be due to a tear in his esophagus from all the coughing.

from all of the symptoms, jinwoo loses his appetite and goes back and forth to only sleeping and being unable to sleep. it is no wonder that olympus is mad with worry, because though his expression is oscar-worthy "fine," the eyebags, sallow color of his skin, and jut of his bones say otherwise.

jinwoo's knowledge of hanahaki

he knows the basics of the disease - its existence, the cause, the symptoms, the general cure of medicine vs surgery, and that there are different strains. he learns more specifics once he looks it up after having it himself but only finds the possible strain (c) after a trip to the doctor post-incident.

jinwoo's thoughts on hanahaki

he thinks that it seems far off, that it isn't something he has to worry about. he does, however, think it a bittersweet disease. it's beautiful that your feelings can grow into a thing that lives and cannot be denied. however, for it to be deadly and extreme? it merely, he mourns, slanders flowers.

jinwoo's feelings about having hanahaki

most of him is surprised initially. he didn't think himself close enough to byunjoong for it. (he knew immediately it'd been for the older model after a conversation on flowers from back then.) then, he thinks it an inconvenience while he practices. he does not, however, hate the disease itself.

interestingly, even as his symptoms grow worse, he still does not hate hanahaki, finds he pities the disease for being the way it is. rather, he slowly resents the company for not treating him, for not letting him stop the coming death with surgery. at least, he thinks, they're paying for his medicine.

if the flowers bloomed in his lungs, what would jinwoo choose to do

while it is merely petals and early on, jinwoo is the kind of guy to think about it - whether the person might return his affection or if he truly loves this person enough to die for them. he would definitely be open to surgery, especially if deadly. he does not, however, have anyone to tell it to.

would he hide it

when he first gets it, hiding it is immediate to give him some time to think. and he does hide it - from everyone. but he doesn't have a choice. he would have, he thinks one day, told the company and olympus eventually, once more symptoms came up, to get the surgery. now, he can't even choose that.
