FRONT CORNER unlike the rest of his peers who've already developed a reputation in social media prior to their enrollment in ygpa, yeyang was an unfamiliar face who became more well known in their classroom as the quiet kid that sits in the first seat of the first row than by his own name.
SEJONG growing up ruiyang was never exposed to modern korean culture, thus in his first year at ygpa he had trouble understanding just about everything his peers were saying—there were too many acronyms and slang he'd never heard of back home, and consequently a couple of classmates poked fun at it by calling him (king) sejong. it's a nickname that quickly died off within just a few weeks, but it still heavily influenced his view on the students in school.

LANGUAGES
KOREAN growing up in yanji city, it was commonplace for people to speak korean over mandarin and he'd grown up using it with his mother and other adults in their neighborhood. unfortunately, because a majority of the koreans in yanji are older (most tend to move back to korea for opportunities after graduating high school) he's completely out of sync with the more modern cultural aspect of the language and was only familiar with the formal, proper way of speech.
ENGLISH the international school yeyang was in enrolled in taught korean and english simultaneously so his english is just about fluent with little trace of an accent. he can occasionally fumble with his pronunciation on certain words, but since he'd learned it in an educational setting he understands the rules of it thoroughly and has flawless grammar.
MANDARIN despite having never studied the language formally because of the comfortable korean bubble he'd lived in, ruiyang was always interested in learning it to better communicate with some of the shopowners and had taught himself mandarin after countless hours of blazing through workbooks. he's now capable of carrying a conversation comfortably and making quips of his own, but his slight korean accent is still yet to fade.

APPEARANCE much to his disdain, ruiyang’s often told he's the spitting image of his father by family friends and acquaintances alike. they share the same downturned lids, slim nose, soft jaw, and the feigned smile that doesn’t quite reach their eyes in the presence of unfamiliar company. the only significant dissimilarity between the two would be their clear difference in physique—ruiyang had inherited his mother’s small stature, coupled with narrow shoulders and thin fingers that only serve to accentuate his petite build. he thinks he collected the worst possible combination of features from both sides, but his gentle appearance admittedly helps their clients warm up to him quickly.
STYLE back in yanji, fashion was easily at the bottom rung of ruiyang’s list of priorities and his lone standard was anything clean. he didn’t care if his wardrobe clashed in color or was long out of fashion, and even if his mother fussed about buying him trendier clothing he was more than willing to settle for the same graphic tee he’d worn the past four years—needless to say, his sense of style is nonexistent and his father had gone as far as hiring a separate stylist to ensure he looks presentable at all times.
he’s frequently dressed in layers to hide his narrow shoulders, rotating between a button up and sweater vest combo or a turtleneck and jacket, and definitely wouldn’t be seen in anything as casual as a hoodie outside the walls of their home. even on warmer days he’d be found in a thin silk shirt tucked into dark slacks as opposed to a simple tee, and dress shoes are a must. the same dedication is put into his uniform which is ironed daily by the maid, and his father emphasizes (or more accurately, nags) the importance of him wearing it properly to school.

PERSONALITY growing up with a mother far too unprepared to raise a child, ruiyang matured faster than most. he took it upon himself to do his share of household chores to take a slice of the burden off his mother who’d come home looking a little more haggard than she did the night prior, and he put in his best effort to raise his grades so the extra hours she worked for his tuition wasn’t for naught. this firm sense of responsibility was prominent even in school, and in parent teacher conferences his instructors would gush to her about how lovely and put together her son was at such a young age. but what the adults in his life failed to realize was that when a child is this... aware, their innocence has already long fled.
not wanting to bother his mom with his problems, ruiyang rapidly developed a new face. no matter how frustrated or annoyed or upset he’d learned to hold his tongue and simply bottle it up until those feelings fizzle away, but it only leads to those thoughts intensifying inside him with no way to seep out. it’s no surprise that when he overhears the dozens of privileged rich kids in ygpa whining about miniscule problems he feels nothing but annoyance towards them, and the longer he withstands from expressing these opinions the stronger the disdain grows. this is precisely why he’s isolated himself socially—avoiding them completely is less emotional labor than interacting with them, and it’s easier to simply focus on his own business when he has so much on his plate to start with.
but as apathetic as he seems to be, ruiyang is defined almost entirely by his emotions. he relies on an instinctive, gut feeling when it comes to judgements and lives strictly in accordance to his own personal value system. it’s exacerbated by his strong sense of empathy, though it’s seldom ever noticed by the people around him because his relationships are often too shallow; when it comes to the people he cares for, however, ruiyang unfailingly internalizes their emotions and does whatever he can to make them feel comfortable.

BACKGROUND while he wasn’t necessarily a mistake, ruiyang definitely wasn’t planned. he was the living, breathing consequence of a mindless affair between an impressionable nineteen year old student and an older businessman drunk off his own wealth. at that point ilbaek electronics had only just taken off, and park sangchul couldn’t risk his reputation to potentially ruin the work he’d already put into his company. so he and his wife, kim minsun, agreed to strike a deal with kim boyoung, the mother of his child: live overseas and keep quiet about the pregnancy, and in exchange they’ll send a monthly allowance so she and her son can live comfortably. otherwise, she risks ruining her and her family's livelihood.
she complied and was sent to yanji city, china, a quiet area filled with ethnic koreans in order for her to at least be able to communicate with the people in her neighborhood. alone, she gives birth to a son she names jin ruiyang, and the first four years of his life she raises him on her own with the monthly payments park sangchul wires into her bank account. but it’s when she decides she wants to give him a better future, one where he can have a greater range of opportunities, living starts becoming a little bit harder; the allowances given covered their rent and living expenses, but the tuition for the local international school in their area cost thousands per semester.
kim boyoung manages to get a position as a waitress at a nearby restaurant, but the wage is abysmal and she struggles to balance working the extra hours of a labor-heavy job with mothering her son. and the hardships didn’t go unnoticed—ruiyang’s first memories are all of his mother’s tired face, and at the young age of six starts teaching himself to cook and clean. she reminds him constantly that it’s her job to take care of him and he just needs to worry about school, but he’s stubborn and doesn’t listen. the older he gets the harder he tries to help his mother relax, take a breath, and it’s in the summer of middle school that they’re contacted by park sangchul.
they learn he and his wife are unable to have children. they’d rather keep the company within the direct family in order to better reap the benefits, but neither of them trusted their own family members enough to consider them reliable. and that’s where ruiyang comes in: he’s capable of speaking three languages, consistently at the top of his class with near perfect grades all across the board, and growing up in such an isolated area means there’s little chance of his real identity ever being exposed. they’ll adopt him formally to teach him the ropes of the company, and until he’s old enough to formally take over they’ll ensure that his real mother is living comfortably in gangnam.
ruiyang wanted to accept it immediately; there’s discrimination against ethnic koreans in china and even if he'd moved back to korea on his own, his chinese identity would strip him of job opportunities no matter how qualified he is. this was a sure ticket for financial stability for him and his mother for years to come. boyoung wants to decline the offer, but she knows in the back of her mind that regardless of what she says she wanted, ruiyang would go along. just like how she wants the best for him he wants the best for her, and she can’t find it in herself to force him to stay in yanji with her.
so when ruiyang officially graduates from middle school, they fly together back to korea so he can begin his new life there.
LIFESTYLE on school days, ruiyang wakes up at 6 to wash up and eat breakfast (frequently cereal or sliced fruits since he doesn’t have much of an appetite in the morning). his father is long gone and minsun is still asleep, so he spends the remaining time to relax in the living room and watch the news. he’s driven to school at 7:40 with a lunch packed by their maid in tow, and the rest of his school day is peaceful. he’s picked up at about 3:20 everyday by his chauffeur, and he spends the next three hours with his private tutor at home; it’s at 7 that he’s finally free, and he usually spends the rest of his day to do homework, review, and talk to his (real) mom.
weekends are slower. ruiyang sleeps in until about 10, and he spends most of his time awake watching show reruns on his phone and texting his mom. it’s on sundays that he’s often out, usually hanging around a local cafe to avoid minsun and her friends that almost always come over for tea and sweets. and unfortunately for him, since he’s such a new face within the circle his father makes a point of bringing him to almost every single soiree they’re invited to—he’s dragged around from family to family, forced to socialize with every face he sees. fitting in with adults is easy since all they need to hear to enjoy your company is endless praise and fake laughter, but it’s inconvenient to waste away his hours there nonetheless.

ELABORATION founded in 1984 by then korea university student park sangchul, ilbaek electronics is a multinational electronics company headquartered in gangnam-gu, seoul, south korea, renown for their productivity software. its best known products are the ilbaek office suite (the preferred program across most academic institutions and corporations in east and southeast asia), mybook (a platform that allows students to keep up to date with coursework, check grades, contact campus services, and for educators to post lectures and host online discussions) and recently ilbaek tech (a new line of smartboards, projectors, tablets, and clickers).
TRIVIA
HEALTH ruiyang’s the type to internalize conflict in his body, so whenever he’s particularly stressed it’s quickly reflected in his physical condition. he gets dark circles, stomach pains, headaches, and frequently catches mild fevers.
SNS unlike the rest of his class, ruiyang has no social media. though it’ll likely never happen he doesn’t want to risk having his identity found out through excessive public exposure, so his only form of sns is kakaotalk. (though he eventually opens an instagram after much coaxing from the diamond class.)
OLD DREAMS before all of this, ruiyang's original goal was to pursue politics since he wanted to right all of the wrongs he witnessed. ironically enough it'd be easier to pursue now with the sheer amount of connections he'd built through his father, but now he's obligated to take over a tech company.

HOURS since ruiyang isn't a part of any clubs, those extra hours that would have been put into extracurriculars are dedicated to studying instead. he goes straight home after school to study with his private tutor for three hours, and afterwards he reviews all of the material he'd covered that day until it's fully memorized.
NOTES it's easier for ruiyang to absorb information aurally so he's developed his own shorthand of abbreviations and symbols to efficiently jot down everything his teacher says whilst putting most of his focus on listening (think of interpreter notes). he later rewrites those notes neatly onto a fresh sheet of looseleaf with any additional details, then organizes it into the corresponding unit labelled in his binder.
