He himself knew very well that his illness wouldn't make him live longer, but he wanted to end his life sooner. That's why he went to the rooftop, walked toward the edge of the roof and climbed up, looked at the city below as he fought back tears.
"Wow, you can fly with this strong winds." He heard a sound from the door, a familiar voice belong to Dr. Jo. Hero deafed his ears, ignoring him. The weather was indeed windy. It was almost blowing a gale.
"Hero!" Dr. Jo called him as he walked toward him, raised his hand, indicating that he won't do anything to hurt him.
"What are you doing here?" Hero looked at Dr. Jo in disbelief.
Dr. Jo smiled, stopped at a distance that wouldn't make Hero feel threatened by him. "I came to check on you, but you weren't there. If you want to go here, you should be waiting for me." Dr. Jo spoke, raising his voice so that Hero could hear him clearly.
Hero remained silent, pretending not to hear it, until Dr. Jo walked to the nearby guardrail and leaned there. He looked down. "Wow, this is so high. If you jump down there, it will take a long time until you get down there. It must be very painful. Just imagine, when you jump in, you have enough time to regret your actions, but you can't come back anymore because it's too late. And once you get down there, you think everything will end? Do you think you'll stop suffering? Can you see the people you love suffer because of you? Do you think you can go in peace? Not wanting to live doesn’t mean you should end things. Just believe that it’ll get better.”
"Nobody loves me!" Hero yelled. "Even my family doesn't care about me anymore. They left me because they no longer wanted to have sick son who only burdened them. Even if I die, they won't care."
"Who said nobody loves you? Why do you think I'm here? You also know, many hate me. It's just that they can't say it directly to me because of my position in this hospital. But you know what? It actually makes everyone hate me even more. I've also done what you will do. Many times." His voice trembled as images of his past flash through his head. Yes, many times, before someone changed him to who he is now. He doesn't want Hero to be a fool like him in the past.
It took about half an hour for Hero to be calmed down. He was about to get off the guardrail, but at that time the rain had begun to fall, making the guardrail slippery. Hero slipped and fell down. Without thinking twice, Dr. Jo jumped down, following him. He wanted Hero to be safe, so he had to change him before it's too late. He has been his patient for the last 10 years and he had already loved him. He saw his past self in him.
Before anyone could see them, Dr. Jo took Hero back to his house right away. His younger siblings, Jiwoo and Yoohyeon, could take care of him while he'll prepare everything they need before they move to other side of the world. After all, they have been living there with humans for a long time. They would start to be suspicious if they don't leave that place immediately.
Hero awakened the following morning, and found himself not feeling sick at all. He feels very healthy, and ... fast. He couldn't control his speed so he kept bumping into walls and making cracks there. Crack? Ha, funny. This must be a dream. Yes, I must still be unconscious because I fell from the rooftop, he thought.
"Looks like you need to train him, Eonni. He looks awful." He heard a sound from the room next to him, and the next second two Asian-faced and blond-haired women were standing right in front of him.
"Hi, I heard that your name is Hero. Well, welcome to our pack, no, our family. I'm Jiwoo, and this is Yoohyeon. She also just joined our family a while ago so I guess she can explain everything to you better than me."
"Eonni, it's been eight years." The taller one corrected.
"Is it? It feels like just yesterday." The shorter one chuckled. "You take care of him, tell him what he needs to know. I'll help Wonho Oppa to prepare a new identity for our new family member." She said before leaving the room in a flash, literally.
Everything is still odd to Hero, his new family, his new residence, and ... his new self. He just realized that his appearance had changed slightly after seeing his reflection in the mirror. His skin still looked pale as usual, but the color of his eyes and hair were different. He now has dark red irises and blonde hair. Yoohyeon said that blonde hair is a signature of Jo family. He doesn't really like those hair since he felt that it doesn't fit his small eyes, so he change its color to black or brown every month or two.
Yoohyeon had told all the things he needed to know about his new self. Jiwoo had taught him how to hunt, and Dr. Jo who now prefer to be called by his name, Wonho, had taught him how to blend with humans without provoking their suspicions about their race. Hero himself is too excited to enjoy his freedom in the outside world, no longer has to be confined in a hospital room filled with the smell of medicine. He is free now. He can go anywhere and as far as he wants without needing to take a lot of time. He can go to school for as long as he wants. He can date any girl he wants. He can do anything, as long as he doesn't make a problem for their race.
What Hero didn't like was that he and other members of Jo family had to move to various countries every decade, since people would begin to be suspicious of them. That meant that every decade he needed to change his identity, so that there was never anyone who really remember him, for more than a century and a half he roamed the earth. Or so he believed, before he met a little girl who promised to remember him and really trailed him like a guard pup later when he met the girl a few years later in Haecheon.
