grew up with two loving, middle-class parents in a medium home in portland, oregon. she was the middle child with two brothers, each of them 3 years apart. she's really close with all of them, and they were a moderately happy family. all the kids were A and B students, parents has stable jobs, and life was pretty normal with it's usual ups and downs. the entire family liked music, so saturday night was karoke night were they had an old karoke machine that only had songs from before 2000. every once in a while, it turned into a competition. grace was freaking competetive, so she'd look up singing lessons online or on youtube to get better.

when grace got into middle school, there was a shift. her older brother went through a rough phase in middle school, and she could tell why. her classmates were so freaking racist. they shouted "white power" in the hallway, two identified as nazis, some teachers didn't believe in racism, and all the minority students could fit in one classroom, so there was little representation. it was a stressful learning environment, and her parents could really see the drastic shift in her cheery personality, so when she was in 8th grade (13), they decided to take her to LA for spring break. she always wanted to go, and she was really thankful for her parents. they spent a few days there when grace saw that sm was holding global auditions. she was a BIG fan of epik high at the time, and she thought epik high was a part of sm instead of yg, so she auditioned for fun. she did try her best, but knew for a fact that she wouldn't pass. however, they called her to stay after everyone left, and they told her she passed. she had a really long and honest talk with her family, and after that, her parents let her go to korea to sign the contract. since she came to korea, she has skyped her parents every saturday, and they all come over during every winter, spring, and summer break to hang out with her. (when she debuts, she'll be too busy, so their visits would be shorter.)

trainee life : when she came to sm in 2012, she was a bit disappointed that epik high wasn't a part of sm. she instantly started talking to lily and other english speakers present. she spoke english so often with them that they thought she didn't know korean. imagine their surprise when she orders take out in fluent korean. when mark came along a few weeks later, she went up to him first because she could tell that he was a shy boy. they were the same age, spoke english, and passed the 2012 sm global audition. they had the same mindset that they needed to practice hard to be anywhere near successful. they often practiced late together.

she would watch the boys class through the glass window to try and learn more, and the teacher got tired of her lurking so he just invited her in to learn with them. (he said she reminded him of amber from f(x) bc she did the same thing.) she was always trying to improve, bothering her teachers to listen to her sing/watch her dance and give critiques. at monthly evaluations, she'd always go for an ambitious song or dance. sometimes she did bad, sometimes she did well, and her skills gradually improved. she continued to work hard like this for 5 years. 

 

predebut experiences :

sm rookies // 2015 // mickey mouse club with other trainees. she didn't get as much screentime as the others thought because she was a nervous mess, and thus quiet.

 

scandals : 

- three or four years after her debut, there would be rumors of donghyuck and her dating because they seem close offstage. there was even a (unreliable) tabloid that said they confirmed it. they were really quick to shut that down.
