Yes, silent readers are annoying as all hell.

I think I say this for a lot of the lesser known writers but getting comments isn't everything in a story. Hell I'm lucky to get at least one comment on a story.

Comments aren't everything. I think I prefer subscribers over comments because at least I know someone likes the story enough to subscribe. I've had a long time reader of my most popular series start following all my stories which I don't mind either. it shows that someone likes how I write things.

As someone who's writing has greatly improved since my first story, seeing new subs always brighten my day. comments are a different thing all together to me with the new karma thing. Not saying I don't like it, but cool. I guess.
