"ara," you repeat, huffing and crossing your arms. said captain looks to you from her seat in the room, mischief lighti-ng her eyes. she opens . "no. i don't know what you're going to say, but no."
she sighs.
"whatever you say," she agrees, clearly respecting your wish to not talk about it. she gestures you over instead, hands fiddling with something out of your view. obediently, you walk over, peering curiously at the object. Her hand takes yours, flipping it palm up.
you recognize the mystery in between her fingers, finally, as she measures the length of the red braid against your wrist. you hold your hand still as both of her hands go to the red braid wrapping around your wrist, just on the side of soft rather than itchy.
"i know you lost yours last battle," ara states without any of the whine or complaint or huff that other girls in your life may use had you lost something they had given you, "so i wanted to see if this replacement is long enough."
she pauses.
"if you want the replacement," she adds, almost carelessly. you smile.
"always," you reply, rewarded with a bright grin that turns her eyes into emeralds. her fingers are warm against your skin - surprising given her illness but explainable by possible fever - but not overly and her uniform remains a pristine white.
"there," she declares, hands moving away with pride. the red braid - "a reminder to write your own fate" - is bright against your pale skin, and you reach your hand out, interlacing fingers with hers.
