Lack of Appreciation Authors/Stories Deserve

It's been brought to my attention, though not something I entirely focus on and I, myself, like to remind my subs I'm always grateful for anything, however, this a bit disheartening in the perspective of others.

Is there like a standard or something I'm missing from this or are readers just not bothering to upvote/comment anymore? Is something wrong or what? o_o

I'm not an attention by any means lol nor am I not an author that requires votes or subs to post ever but this bothers me slightly considering that some days, it really just makes a person's day to see the notification that their story is getting appreciation...

This began to etch into my mind after I've gotten several messages of friends/other authors venting, etc that they have been discouraged and are wanting to quit writing or continue stories for lack of appreciation. I mean it's a click to just upvote and make an author's day or motivate them? I can understand when a work clearly doesn't deserve it, fine, I'm not saying we should all click upvote for every story we read, but it's disheartening to see stories not getting enough attention they honestly deserve when they put time and/or so much effort into their stories, especially when it's like the and makes me want to click upvote like 100 times over if I could spam it lol

Idk what this is about or what's going on, but like guys, as much as this is a hobby or whatever for most people, it's the least people can do is click if they like what's out there. Like, don't play me. If you can like crap posts on Facebook, you know how to click upvote -_-

I understand being busy or lazy or whatever. Personally, I don't have a lot of time in my days to read or comment 24/7 but I do make the effort to upvote when works deserve it or some kind of credit for what they've done, if I appreciate an aspect of their story - be it the thought in characters/plotline, the portrayal of people, the imagery, writing style, etc. Sometimes I send PMs to authors/friends that I believe are doing great, and on occasion when I can and have something nice and meaningful to say, I do try to comment after reading. If not then and there, I do bookmark stories to come back and comment at a better time that I can put my heart into some words o: I also like to try when I can and message to encourage friends on their writing or show my support with upvotes and comments. I've helped friends with advice on writing or how to write something or answer general writing questions and given ideas to them, despite myself being a newb and okay at writing. Anything helps and makes a difference, guys...

And if you need motivation to upvote/comment, it honestly may give fruition to having and seeing better and original stories...since I've seen and gotten vents complaints around about that and stories being ok or following clichés, too.

It strikes me more to see stories that don't deserve as much attention as they're getting in comparison to stories that are more barren in subs, comments, and upvotes... That peeves me, drives me bananas, and utterly mindboggles me tbh.

Not gonna lie, it does seem sketchy and fishy when you just see stories that have a bunch of comments just saying "Wow!" or "This is great!" like ... tf is that. I'm sorry lol like heck, I appreciate 1000 times more of my own subs that spam me them smashing the keyboard as comments lmao that has more life, gratitude, and display of appreciation in comments for a fic than "Good story," or you know, not clicking upvote o_o

So... Give some more love guys to other authors out there!!

Sometimes this is all that makes their day better or gets them through the week, you know? Or like other authors that are the bomb.com think they're trash o_o... So, go appreciate your favorite stories and authors more! Go bookmark, comment, and click upvote for people (that deserve it)!!!

I don't want to see more messages or feel more heartache from friends or authors venting on quitting or actually quitting because of this (メ` ロ ´)!

You want better content, stories, and authors? Encourage the ones that don't , plagiarize, etc ._.

Like heck, tell people helpful criticism or something like to work on their writing more but their plot is beautiful, etc.

Be nice people, get nice things! It's not hard!

Also silent reader doesn't mean you have no opinion. Stay silent if you wish of course by all means, but click upvote if you like something ;o;!

It's like life - it may not be significant to you, but it might be for someone else ;n;!!

Let's spread more love, appreciation, and kindness, everyone please and thank you~ ♡

UPDATE: I have made a discussion thread for this so we can really step up the appreciation game!! Please post recommendations of under appreciated fics here!:

so I have to comment on this, because you make a really really good point here and you are absolutely right. this message needs to get out there because, as an author, we do write for ourselves but when we decide to share our writing with others, we really need that feedback in order to continue. without it, we can really lose motivation. I mean, you remember last summer when I was scared to post my scifi story because I was afraid nobody would like it and I was afraid it would get zero feedback and I would lose all motivation to write it. haha I'd been writing it for almost a year without posting it, just because I was so afraid. so I think feedback, even just a simple upvote, is very crucial to authors. I agree with you that it doesn't have to be a long comment, even just an upvote makes my day and lets me know someone appreciates my writing, that all my hard effort isn't in vain.
also I've actually been on AFF since 2011, and the site has changed so much since then. people used to talk so much more back then and interact so much more; wall posts all the time, tons of comments, etc. I actually met some of my best friends on this site and we have stayed close and even met several times in person. for some reason the site became less social, and kinda just turned into a popularity contest about who had the most upvotes or the most karma or whatever else. also the daily advertising thing---it's great but I also feel like it has some negative repercussions as well. years ago there weren't all these restrictions on karma and voting and stuff. I think maybe one reason people don't always upvote is because it costs 25 karma points to upvote (I think), which I get they did that to stop voting fraud, completely understandable. but it did make things harder because some readers may not have those karma points.
but your point about the very high quality, well-written stories getting less attention...that has been the case ever since I've been on AFF. idk why but for some reason the cliche, poorly-written fics have always gotten all the attention and the features and subs and whatnot. the actual well-written and captivating stories never seem to get as much attention. no idea why but I've always noticed that trend here. it baffles me too.
anywho you made a fantastic point with this post. but for the most part, this is still a really great site and the people here are so sweet and I adore my readers so much, they're the best <3 hopefully we can spread the love and make all the awesome authors on this site feel valued and appreciated! :D
