jeon joon
works at
blizzard snow !
let it be known that jeon joon isn't the most amicable person on the planet. he'll be the first person to admit it. but maybe he wasn't thinking straight when he applied for a job as a cashier at blizzard snow, the one job that he could have chosen that forced him to interact with people.

it's not that he doesn't try to be friendly and patient. really, he does try. but sometimes it gets so frustrating, delivering to every customer's whims and preferences. could this person get an extra pump of peppermint? oops, that customer spilled his drink, could he purchase another one for free? it doesn't take much for joon's temper to rise, and when it does, he's afraid that he'll get fired. so joon has made do by glancing at the back door to make sure that sungsook isn't watching, and tries to be patient. he's putting real effort into this job. i mean, he can't help that he's bad at customer service— he's just got to last until a couple more weeks.
legal name전준.
nicknames
jj / from the first letters of his full name. nobody calls joon this except his best friend sunbin, who insisted when they were younger that they make special nicknames for each other because they were bestest friends. the names have kind of stuck. (joon calls his best friend binsun)
준어 / a mix of his name and the word for octopus because his limbs are long and kind of go everywhere.
연필준 / joon's a sack of bone and skin. he's not particularly muscular or fat, but he's really tall and skinny, hence the nickname "pencil joon". his family are the ones who calls him this, and now whenever his mother, father, or sister pick up a pencil while joon's there to visit, they waggle their eyebrows in his direction.

appearancejoon pays attention to what he wears. well, that might be an understatement. if you scroll through his instagram, you'll find pictures among pictures of joon's various outfits. he wears his uniform pretty much like it's given to him, joon doesn't feel like adding decorations or being extra with his uniform. he does roll up the sleeves to the shirt a lot, it's a nervous habit that has incorporated its way into work.

his usual style is ripped jeans and a shirt or hoodie. it works for joon, and his pants drawer is literally all denim. he also has a pair of those round glasses with black frames. they're not prescription, he just adds them for the look.

how it came to bejoon would like to say that he is a good son. so good, in fact, that he remembers to send his mother a gift each day on her birthday and his parents' anniversary, and he makes sure to call her every once in a while to keep her from worrying. he brings gifts when he visits her on chuseok or new year's, which is more than his friends do, that's for sure. so when his mother starts yelling at him for never letting her into his own life, joon thinks her argument is ill-supported. his stumbling words make their way out of his mouth, and he finds himself telling his mother that he's been a bit distant because he got a job and he's been busy with that (not wanting to tell her that he's working on a little... project of his own, seeing that she's always been stubborn about joon not pursuing film). and his mom immediately quiets down and scolds her son for not telling her. but of course, being a good son, he agrees to his mom inviting herself to stay in joon's apartment for a couple of days. a week at most, she says. so joon lazily pulls up his phone calendar and inputs a new event: mom coming to stay. clean the apt. and then, of course, he promptly forgets about it.

it's not until a couple of days later, when he witnesses his best friend wincing as he gets shouted down by his own mom, that joon remembers with a jolt that his mom is coming to visit. and... god, what was he thinking when he told her he had a job? he should have just told her he was busy with school, or worrying about finals. joon knows that when his mom comes, she'll interrogate him about his job— but it's nonexistent. joon sighs and hangs his head in his hands. he'll have to score a job in the next couple of days if he wants to stay alive.

joon decides to walk around near the main street to see if any of the shops down there are hiring, because let's be honest: it's the easiest and most convenient choice. he recognizes gwak tea, the bustling interior and the rustic feeling of the decoration he can spot from the window. and... across from it— is that a new shop? the bright sign says blizzard snow, and the bit of decoration he peeps gives off a more outdoorsy, relaxing vibe. it's on the other side of the street, and sue joon for not wanting to cross the mid-day traffic. he's out of luck for the shops on this side of the street; joon's even stuck his head in the shops and asked shops that didn't have a sign stuck to their front window. he crosses his fingers as he moves across the street.

and thank his lucky stars, joon ends up finding a "now hiring! cashier / baker / barista / other. ask inside for more information!" sign taped to blizzard snow's window. he nearly runs inside, taking a deep breath before pasting on a smile and asking the employee at the counter about the job.

that's how, when joon's mom comes to visit, he had somehow managed to score a job on a whim and maintain it. his mom's satisfied with his work, he's satisfied that his mother's not suspicious, and he's got a new job. joon can't remember lying ever turning out this well.

lifestyle joon enlisted as soon as he graduated high school, and finished his two-year mandatory military time in 2012. he enrolled in konkuk university soon after, and is now a senior at the school.

before joon went and lied to his mother, he had filled his days up with a little project he had been working on. see, joon's mother and father had always been traditional— they wanted their son to study something like business, medicine, or law. definitely not film, like joon was interested in. but when joon saw a flyer for a film seminar, he couldn't help but attend. since then, his younger passion for film had been re-sparked, and he's been working on a small side project of his own. well, he doesn't know about small, but it's definitely a project.

it's a short film project, and his goal is to capture people in work. it's a vague outline, but so far he's gathered shots of his close friends and even some self-cams of himself working or studying. he hopes to compile it into a longer video clip that his friend group can save for the future. he's also kinda new at film so joon also wants to improve as he goes!

otherwise, joon is a senior at konkuk university. he majors in economics, hoping to enter law school after earning his ba. his roommate also happens to be his best friend, and on days he doesn't have too much class or work, he works on his film project in his apartment. otherwise, he likes to take walks in the area around his apartment. his usual route snakes around his apartment complex and into a park, where there's usually a group of small kids.

trivia
• his ig (@jeonjoooon) has four "o"s in the "joon" part so that one o represents one member of his family. he made it when he was a freshman in high school, and hasn't changed the handle since then.
• hig ig has kind of blown up into his own mini ig model acc. nothing too big, but pics of himself and his day attract people. he also posts pictures of food.
• joon doesn't have set playlists for certain times or moods, he just saves all his songs onto his spotify songs and then listens to that on shuffle. he's using the student discount for spotify and doesn't know what he'll do when he graduates.
• when he was in high school and bought condoms on his own for the first time, the cashier said "have a good time," and winked, so on reflex joon replied "you too," and he nearly died on the way out he turned so red
• spends a lot of time scrolling through random accounts on instagram. at first, he did it on accs that posted tumblr textposts in english so he could improve his english. he still does, but now he definitely reads faster and he's also learned a lot of english slang on the journey.
• highkey scared of dogs. joon doesn't really have a reason to be, he just... is. if he sees one walking towards him, he'll cross the street to avoid it.
• when sunbin finds about how joon got his job, he bursts out laughing while joon indignantly crosses his arms. and when joon's mom comes to visit, sunbin keeps sending looks at joon that makes him want to smack the older boy.
• joon hasn't tried to get jobs inside his major because he wanted to focus on schoolwork, and he felt inexperienced.
• at work, he's not completely terrible at customer service. i mean, maybe he is, but he tries not to let it show too much. he ends up really frustrated at customers sometimes, especially if the drink machines aren't cooperating with him either. he avoids making small talk with the customers, because it could easily escalate into joon getting frustrated or confused. vs. at school, joon is close to the same way. he's closed off and avoids talking if he can get away with it. even when he was younger, joon didn't talk that much at home. one of the only reasons he ended up making such a good friend out of sunbin is because they were forced to play together as young kids, and their friendship grew on them.

hey! have to do annual employee evals; it'll only take a few minutes. you ready?"uh, hello?" joon scratches the back of his head. he had been dragged in just minutes as he had arrived for his shift, so it's safe to say that joon was a bit flustered at the sudden questions. "yeah, i'm ready."

okay, joon, how long have you been working for blizzard snow again?joon's eyes dart around for a while, trying to remember the date, before he says, "i've been here for around... a week? a week and a half?" joon seizes the moment to thank the heavens that he managed to get this job.

thanks for refreshing my memory! what made you want to work for me initially?"uh," he stumbles. he doesn't want to say the truth, because let's be honest— an employer doesn't want somebody who took a job because they were literally forced to. "i... wanted a job that helped my people skills? i was looking around the area for part time jobs that could make that happen, and blizzard snow fit the description." he mentally high fives himself.

uh huh. and your official title is...?"i guess i'd be a cashier and barista." he points to the cashier machine, which is just visible from the back room that he's in right now. joon hadn't thought that he would be able to make drinks, but after a bit of training, he had started to get a handle on it. after all, it was mainly pouring drinks into cups and trying not to drop the cups.

great! how do you feel about working here?"it's been a pretty great experience so far!" joon says, and for once, it's not a lie. sure, the customers have been frustrating and the amount of face-to-face interaction he has to do makes him tired, but otherwise, it's been an a+ workplace. 11/10. not that he has anything to compare it to, but hey.

i see... let me write that one down. okay, what's your favorite dish or drink we serve?"hmm," joon rests his hand on the small table in front of him. "i'd have to say that the blueberry scones are my favorite? it's been a favorite pastry of mine for a while, and after being blizzard snow-ified it's regaining its previous #1 spot on my favorite foods list."

alright. do you have any suggestions or comments about working here?joon chuckles and lets his foot bounce against the leg of the chair. "well, not going to lie, the amount of lovey dovey customers annoys me. maybe it's the fact that i'll never find love of my own," he tries to soften his words with a joke, letting a grin spread over his face. "and... well, the boards in front of the shops aren't as subtle as you guys might think. it's kinda obvious that you're directing them at another shop? makes me laugh, though."

okay, not as bad as i was expecting, which is good. but more importantly... what do you honestly think of the cafe across the street?"i've been there a couple of times? they have pretty good food. but like i said before, both blizzard snow and gwak tea seem like they're not-so-subtly dissing each other on those boards outside. i have a friend who used to work at gwak, so i've eaten there a couple of times about a year ago. seems like steady competition!" sungmin had worked at gwak tea during the pair's sophomore year at konkuk, and the amount of times that he had dragged joon into gwak tea to eat would forever be ingrained into his memory (and his stomach). joon has noticed that the owner (owner? an employee?) of gwak tea had been over several times, delivering food and a snide smile to sungsook. joon hadn't really questioned it, thinking it was some sort of inside joke between the two shops. he doesn't really have an opinion on the relationship between the shops.

alright. i'll be sure to keep that in mind. and look at that! we're all done."thank you!" joon makes sure to shake sungsook's hand and bow, making a hasty exit back to the front register.

김선빈 the og friend. the two have been close since elementary school, when they were neighbors and their parents were friends before they were. sunbin is also 21 years old and goes to konkuk university, where he and joon are roommates. sunbin used to work at gwak tea, and whenever joon tells him things about the rivalry between the two shops, sunbin's always very interested. they have inside jokes together, and sunbin probably knows everything there is about joon. he's also been the main object in joon's film project, since joon spends the most time with sunbin. 담성숙 joon's first employer. surely, sungsook suspects something off about joon's customer service and the desperate look in his eyes when he submitted his application to work at blizzard snow. since then, joon's been careful of how he acts around sungsook, because he needs this job. her positive personality rubs off of joon at times, and he finds himself laughing  at the jokes she cracks and the posters she hangs up in the break room. to be honest, joon's a bit surprised that sungsook hasn't said anything about his customer service yet. he hasn't gotten any bad customer reports and now that he thinks about it, not too many frustrating customers had been around when sungsook was around. she passes his moods off as bad days, since he's been working at blizzard snow for such a short amount of time. one of the other reasons that sungsook doesn't let joon go is because especially around that time of year, the academic year is pretty busy and it isn't easy to hire or re-hire for positions that are left empty by fired employees.[fc: park sunyoung]

이가민 gamin is the employee at the convenience store next to joon's apartment that frequents the shop the most. whenever he goes in to get a snack or a midnight meal or whatever, gamin always greets him at the counter. gamin recognizes him whenever he walks in and always gives him snarky commentary on the food and items that joon has decided to purchase. it's a small friendship that joon's glad for, because she ends up covering for him when his mother comes down to the convenience store. of course, his mother takes it upon herself to ask gamin if she knows her son joon. gamin confusedly answers yes, and answers her prodding questions about his son's job the best she can. after all, joon finds herself word vomiting as he pays for his things, and somewhere in the way he's told her about his mom.
