Appearance
a coffee copy girl
haejin looks like a typical girl in korea: not something that would stand out of the crowd. put her in a company such as sm, and she would be concluded to look "modest" or "humble-looking" at best. she has been told by the public that her face is bigger than usual, and in order to soften her looks - she has turned to bangs. thus, her usual looks would be bangs with her long hair falling right over her shoulder.
your shoulders, knees and toes.
that being said -- in terms of appearance, her charm is a certain freshness that most people would agree comes only when you're young. her true charm are things that cannot be changed - namely, her proportions. despite standing only at 156cm and being relatively shorter than an average korean, haejin manages to pull most clothes off and receive various compliments for her legs.
style
fashion and passion - in korean, they are written the same way
haejin isn't going to lie - as someone slowly grows up, she also understands the need for style. she takes up plenty of time preparing - about a hour and half looking for the perfect outfit and doing her hair/makeup. even though to a bystander, they probably wouldn't think much of what she is wearing. as someone that is still growing up - haejin's style is ever changing. one day, she'll be out with a baseball cap and plain t-shirt tucked into a pair of shorts, another day she will pair culottes up with a formal shirt.
first rule of growing up: thou shalt not leave the house without lip tints and eyebrow pencils
ever since becoming a trainee, haejin has also become someone that is particular about the way she presents herself. she never leaves the house without at least filling in her eyebrows and spreading orange lip tint (even though let's be real, she can't leave the dorms without makeup tbh).
personality
we're only human, we need no reason
reserved stiff
plain jane, jane doe, a faceless in a sea of people - much like these names and her appearance suggest, most people tend to look at haejin and see right past her and for good reason. haejin's good-natured appearance and mannerisms seem to suggest a "vanilla" appearance: someone that is pleasant to be around with, but still seem too bland to have an interesting friendship with. she doesn't necessarily see herself as shy but many see her as being rigid and unmoving - a conversation with her is filled with awkward pauses, even with "louder" people. people get the idea that she seem to be resistant, though they aren't sure of what. thus, haejin is more often not dismissed as being "boring".
"tuesday seems a little hasty, wednesday feels a little weird
and i just don't like wednesdays"
passive
the impression of rigidness doesn't end when you stop being friends with her though - you see it whether you are her mother, an acquaintances of 5 months or a friend of 10 years. as one slowly gets to know her - they realise the word passive could pretty much be the word invented to describe people like her. she speaks in a choppy, awkward manner and she isn't a demonstrative person. her hard-headedness is hidden behind words like "up to you", "anything," "i'm fine with whatever." you find out later, as you throw out several different suggestions that she is in fact not okay.
critical
haejin isn't easy to please - a bone that her friends just love to pick on. haejin is easygoing - in theory, she can eat anything that you give her but in all honesty, she has an opinion about how everything is best done. tofu should be seared in one way - the ice shouldn't be too big. she pretty much excelled in korean literature because art mimics life. she manages to connect things in such a breathtaking manner when given the right type of subject but most of the time, its not a nice look. she applies her standards on pretty much everything - even people, which explains why her interpersonal relationships can suffer if this isn't kept in check
"oppa -" "did you lose your bus card again"
"..." "its the second time this month!"
"i'm still a strong independent woman." "i swear if you aren't a girl -"
whimsical childish / emotional
most people who arrive at the conclusion that haejin is just an awkward piece of wood would most likely get a rude awakening when she turns around and hits them with a complete curveball. while she just comes across as a slightly awkward teenage girl, the reality is messier than what she is willing to admit. emotions, being emotions, tend to be irrational. and while she does a good job in managing them, they still project and run wild in the form of whimsical behavior. expect her to make decisions that no one can wrap their head around.
emotional hot- temper
some things just do not mix well together: haejin's emotions and her temper is not something you want to trifle with. her temper is something akin to a volcanic explosion - she is both short tempered and hot tempered, and it isn't a pretty combination for others involved. for one, she tends to take a passive side during argument. but you should always be careful about what you say to haejin during an argument - whether or not she is within earshot because she is taking notes. she tends to hold grudges for grievances committed - especially if they are done without regards for the relationship.
when your heart is aching, when no one is by your side, just come here
perceptive
though haejin is useless in all matters that are worldly and/or practical, she is surprisingly insightful. people are often surprised when haejin says something that hits right on the nail: most people don't really expect that out of her. haejin is surprisingly perceptive about a person and their motivations and can easily put two to two together. she is often the person her friends have tireless deep talks with people - she can usually sustain a "deep conversation" with no issue. haejin isn't afraid of intensity; and as some would come to realize, she is pretty intense herself.
loyal
you can expect haejin to make a serious effort to keep to commmitments. and most of the time, when it comes to big things, haejin doesn't disappoint. haejin finds that after a while, people gravitate towards her. sure, haejin borders onto permissiveness. but haejin gets people - and she often sees that as power and she, doesn't at all try to weld it over people. so with her, there's no shaming, no "i told you so" (as much as she really wants to sometimes), no judgment, no "you should be better". sure, haejin criticizes. but even when she's picking at your flaws, you get the sense that she's just saying it and she doesn't expect or want you to change because friendship means love - and if you can't love them for who they are, then what's the point? haejin gives her friends room to grow. all is good and fine except for - maybe the only downside about this arrangement is that, she expects the same treatment that she gives to her friends .
stop, thoroughly observe the world. and then go your own way.
principled self centred
"even criminals have their code of ethics," is something that is pretty much drilled into haejin's brains. while she has her own flaws, haejin likes to see herself as a person with her own principles. on one hand, this helps to keep her uglier traits in line and on the other, it amplifies and worsens some of her other traits. while others might have an inkling of their "dos" and "don'ts", haejin finds herself thinking about this a fair bit.
everything haejin does and say revolves around one concept: herself. with other people, she tries to mind her own business. even when she is directly involved in things, there is something detached about her dealings. and the idea of "mind your own business" is a big reason why. haejin primarily puts the focus on herself - what does she want, what does she want to do. in her defense, its because she is the only thing that she can control. but receiving so many benefits from other people and etc - in a way, she can't really see other people at all.

training life
fnc ent: "i worked like a ing animal in there it wasn't humane at all"
was scouted by a representative of fnc ent when she helped out at the annual year end concert at her parents childcare concert. she managed to clear the audition rounds easily - though not without them making it clear that she had real work cut out for her.
evaluations-wise, she didn't fare too well honestly. she had a positive impression of her company and thus, worked hard to try and prove herself. her coaches didn't spare her feelings and were quite harsh with their feedback towards her. and though this discouraged her, she also used their comments as motivation to work harder.
what made haejin change her opinion of fnc entertainment? the grapevine. there were rumors of fnc signing on big name MCs and actors, established artists were dissatisfied with the company. It soon clicked that she didn't have a shot in fnc entertainment and that she had pretty much been wasting her time in fnc. it pissed her off even more that there didn't seem to be anything that she could do about it.
until sm came swooping in like a knight in white.
sm ent: "more trouble than she was worth tbh"
she clearly was not thinking straight when she auditioned for sm while she was still a trainee in fnc ent. it was just for the hell of it - she did npt think that she would actually make the cut. until she found herself accepted into sm ent - her parents begrudgingly paid off the contract terms that she had violated and that was a done deal. she was officially a sm trainee.
she was a different person in fnc / sm. while she was a lot more serious and uptight in fnc, she basically took her trainee career in sm seriously for like 10 seconds before she got too comfortable. and tbh, she got tired of caring. she only practiced and thought about improving during evaluations and she slacked off a decent bit.
surprisingly, she had a better and relationship with her coaches in sm ent than in fnc. partially because in fnc, she was always rigid and came off negatively to her coaches. in sm, she had a tendency of being more bold. this, though, might come off as being rude to certain trainees. some people did not appreciate the extra competition, as well.
predebut experiences
smrookies debut she debuted as a member of smrookies in the june of 2016.
idol life
introducing: guruto-kun
your life as an idol tends to build around the image given to you. and to be honest, she really liked the image given to her. and though it was not easy to accept, she has come to terms with how the intended image that slowly been replaced with the image of a lump of wood. her image has evolved from a youthful girl with the freshness of spring - to someone of an awkward nature. on one hand, its endearing. but with the love she received, she is also mae the of one too many memes on various mediums.
you can't win in this world tbh
she knows that she got lucky with sm ent - what were the chance of someone like her making a debut? in fact, her idol career started negatively. other than facing the doubts of other trainees in sm, the general public also doubted her character and sm's decision to include her in the roster.
sipping apple juice, watching sing street
something that she obviously enjoys about being the sister group of nct? the one too many opportunities to travel overseas. though awkward with the members in ioa, getting on a plane puts her in such a good mood. partially, its also because back in fnc, opportunities like this are basically null. as far as she was concerned, she was sort of living in a dream but with some obvious drawbacks.
"but a radio show -" "i said no for the millionth time,"
she isn't really known to be the most talented idol around, obviously. but something that she has been pushing for are opportunities to be in radio shows. sm has been denying such opportunities because tbh, sm doesn't trust her when she talks. her favourite part of being an idol is the vlives and guest-starring on radio shows

personal life
a severe case of middle child syndrome
being the middle child to a set of educator has its cons - haejin's childhood was surrounded by children. haejin grew up feeling overlooked by her parents and this resulted in a sense of alienation and insecurity that she is unable to shake off. she often brushes off affection directed in her attention and has a tendency of not "seeing" the effort that people put into her. unless the other party told them expressly verbalizes something, its out of sight & mind.
big cars, big rings but you have no dreams
if you ask haejin what she wants to do in the future, you'll get this look of uncertainty that is disguised poorly. haejin is pulled in one too many diections and doesn't have the confidence to settle down on just one path. but other than not being able to choose a life path to follow, haejin is also unable to make up her mind about anything and anyone. she's wishy-washy and indirect and lmao its frustrating.
i want to be loved, but you don't seem to love me.
i wander aimlessly within that repetition
she has an odd relationship with closed ones - they obviously like each other, but she dismisses their importance in her life. this applies for even her parents - who are not as sensitive as her. her peculiar relationship is sure to raise eyebrows even amongst people around here. she has a problem acknowledging the need to love and to be loved - and wants to remain detached from people. but on the other hand, she also wants the approval of her parents about her decision to be an idol.
even if i'm scared, even if i get hurt,
i want to say i love you to the person i love
she has a problem acknowledging emotional vulnerability. though she isn't at all obvious about it, she has a hard time being emotionally honest with loved ones. this can get taxing on the people around her..
drama
#01 -- lines don't keep people out, they cage you in
i can see haejin's interactions with her groupmates being superficial or being one-sided. as in, someone thinks they are close with haejin while haejin remains somewhat detached from them. which is perfectly fine in most contexts - until they argue and haejin is unwilling to talk about what is wrong and what she really feels. she finds things like interventions stupid and i think it could destroy group morale.
#02 -- "haejin, its chuseok." "i don't know."
when the scandals of her siblings came out, it hit her pretty hard. her whole family was just like any family - and it has its own idiosyncrasies amongst other things. she felt that if she hadn't been an idol, things would have been easier for her family and she avoided going home for a while because she didn't know how to face her parents.
scandals
sm's special treatment to ioa member -- pann article
if everyone had to be honest, she wasn't too bad. but at the same time, there are trainees that have worked harder and have stronger talents. after finding out that she was scheduled to debut, there are common concensus that she seems much more serious than they had expected her to be. she stayed back later to work on choreographies and the songs.
smrookies beom caught in a night club??
her sister had a gig at a popular nightclub that night and her sister had invited her to come watch - with guestlists and all. she had sneaked out - much against the better judgment of the management. though they defended her and released a statement explaining what really had happened, knetz were all like "but what the is her sister working at a nightclub for".
are we allowing the parents who raised these children to raise the future generation of korea??
eventually, articles of haebin and haechan surfaced. haechan was exposed to have distributed music illegally through the use of thumbdrives (inspired by gdragon). haebin was also called several different names for working at night clubs articles surfaced about her parents and their occupations, and it was quite a headache for everyone involved. nonetheless, haejin felt awful even though she didn't really talk about it much.
ioa haejin is awkward with ( names )
being a newer member in ioa as compared to the rest, there is a more than obvious gap. that much is obvious to anyone with eyes. haejin struggles to open up to the other girls in ioa - and her personality makes it easy for conflicts to leak out longer than expected. i would expect articles to come out - especially w her relationship with taeyong.

interactions
pushing and pulling, you're so ambiguous
they deal with their relationship a lot like children. placing them in the same room is a bad decision to make offscreen because they are almost always at each other's necks. their actions and their words are not in sync - because even though they bicker nonstop, they would do it while sharing a banana milk. its easy to just brush off their relationship as a tom & jerry relationship - especially because the highlight of the relationship is basically how they try to verbally tear each other down. but there are several times where their bickering is their own way of communicating and brainstorming with one another. they don't really take what the other party say to heart - and in fact, its nice to be able to speak comfortably with the other party. there is no need for honorifics, no need to pretend. a lot of times, the other party is a catalyst for provoking ephiphany. no one really understands how or when - but they know the spark when it happens.
like the moon that centres around you
haejin and doyoung tends to hover around one another, a lot. this is much less evident and obvious now that they both have individual schedules but they pay attention to one another. haejin, at least, is aware when his team is performing and would somehow be there. she tends to take a more subtle approach of a "i'll just coincidentally show up and not talk about it at all" while doyoung is more straightforward. during their training years - if one is in the practice studio, the other would coincidentally be there. and while it is in doyoung's nature to care about people enough to know where his friends are at - it looks quite suspicious on haejin's part because y'know, haejin doesn't care.
1-4-3 ( i love you ), i still can't say it comfortably
another important aspect of their relationship is ineffective communication, which is an oxymoron because as i said, they communicate best with one another. or at least, haejin feels comfortable enough with doyoung. they even have their own way of communicating with people. and yet, they are also unable to adequately express themselves. these tend to rear its ugly head when someone has doyoung's attention, or vice versa. they tend to resort to childish, primitive methods to show their jealousy because, yes, they do get jealous. haejin is definitely more lowkey about it because she gets that rationally, she doesn't really have a claim over him. she tends to avoid him, giving him the cold shoulder every time she feels she doesn't have much of a position in his life. similarly, doyoung does the same thing - except that, he shows his jealousy by reveling in her discomfort.
when the lights start flashing like a photobooth
in front of the camera and the public eye, haejin tends to shrink away from the relationship. sure, she still does not hesitate to complain about doyoung and his childish antics to people that are around the vicinity. but she also prefers to keep their relationship professional. she is very good in separating church from state in that sense.
"I was average I guess"
"I didn't think you're average"
relationship status
be your shelter, be your storm
their friendship is adamantly stuck in the same stubborn place of being friends. sometimes - too many times than they are willing to admit, they fantasize about being more. after all, it feels right. they feel comfortable around one another, they like one another. everyone can see it, they feel it. but yet, there are always reasons, excuses. they are stuck in the same place, wanting more but unable to move forward.
