I Like to Stress Once Again...Take Mental Illnesses Seriously

A young man has committed suicide, he was only 27. Kim Jonghyun was an established and talented K-pop songwriter and producer, even though I didn't know SHINee really well, I was aware of his incredible talents, the song he wrote for Lee Hi- "Breathe" is evidence of that. He was also a vocal advocate for changes to the government education policy, for mental health awareness and the LGBT community, all issues that have stigma attached, especially in such a conservative country, and he still continued despite the criticisms and backlash, and I really, really admire him for that.

Because there are not a lot of celebrities who do use their fame and status to speak up for others, and to spark awareness for such issues, I have seen many celebrities (especially in my birth city of Hong Kong) speaking up for issues like democracy and the LGBT rights at first, then they back down and got down onto their knees in spineless cowardice once they faced backlash and criticism, so for someone like Jonghyun to continue voicing even in the face of criticisms and backlash, is far too few. It is so sad that we have lost an incredible talent and kind man. And someone just reminded me that he has joined the '27 Club', alone with Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison...

His family released his suicide letter, and it was so heartbreaking, it revealed what nobody can see, what was wrong with him, how he blamed himself and despised himself, how he felt so alone, how he felt there is no one to help him...

I would like to stress again, mental illnesses are not something that we can see, we cannot judge someone's mental state by their actions, and we can never truly 100% certain what others are feeling or thinking. So, please do take care of those around you, make sure that they know they are not alone.
I really do hope mental illnesses are taken more seriously, and not be treated so casually, and be even made a joke out of. It really pissed me off to still see comments making fun of mental illnesses, as foreign presses have also reported on it, and while the majority probably haven't heard of him, there were those who expressed compassion and condolences, but there were also trolls who mocked and joked at both mental illnesses, and assuming he was gay and needed to be punished for it, just because he was a supporter of the LGBT community, as religious bigots crawled out of the woodwork.
