intro imagine an elegant girl who does everything with grace and was the captain of the archery team and vice captain of the kendo team her middle and high school years. imagine her large number of shy admirers but her inability to discern emotional connotations, believing their distance to be from distaste. imagine how the girl grows up, believing everyone hates her but is too stubborn to change. imagine how the cycle continues, further putting this girl up on a pedestal while she doesn't want to be a lone wolf but just wants to make friends and enjoy her college years. imagine she transfers university in order to do so. this is that girl.
other students seen as a literal goddess, they simply stare at her from afar and whisper behind shielding hands, admiring and envying but also simply wondering. how can a girl be born with everything? brains (near-straight a's), brawn (talent in both archery and kendo), and beauty (duh). they gossip under their breaths about how she must be like - pampered, they guess; with a hot boyfriend (aka one hot graduate who everyone absolutely adores), they add; with a possy (aka one intimidating sophomore who no one dares call the real name of), they mutter. rumors vary but one thing remains constant to them: she is completely out of their league.
her classmates with closer insight into the supposed goddess of the campus, the students are swiftly disillusioned of any fantasies of secret club romances because they find that, yeah, that ain't happening when she can have anyone she wants. she pulls things off with finesse and pure ability that they can only dream of. she's cordial - gentlemanly and lady-like - and does things on her own always without assistance. they don't see why someone like her needs, well, anyone. what could they offer someone like her anyways? they glance at the sophomore who grunts a response to her but won't talk to anyone else. see? how can they compete with him?
herself she doesn't understand why everyone hates her. people whisper as she walks down the halls and can't stand more than a minute of conversation with her. it's aggravating because she knows why. she knows her faults. she's stubborn to a fault (which is why she has difficulty changing). she is a harsh leader who desires perfection in all - herself most of all. she believes in anyone and everything (until they give her a reason not to anyways). she thinks of the worst that can happen, much to her not-cousin's dismay. and she's always so unsure of her place. is she a good captain? daughter and "cousin?" should she even be here? why her?
her elder "cousin" she is, he thinks, someone who will one day be great. he loves this girl and knows that one day she'll become someone great. to see her mature and to watch over her, he thinks, is a privilege. but he also knows today is not the day. he sees the way she keeps her calm, taking things into stride with enviable ease; the way she reacts instantaneously, an acute business sense that only pure ability can produce; the way she picks things up with ease, natural gifts waiting to be molded; the way she can do it all on her own, regardless of what it is. he sees yet also knows how she struggles. she is, he realizes, still a kid inside.
her other "cousin" he thinks that she's an enigma of contradictions - someone to admire and compete with but also to guide. everyone knows her strengths. few know her weaknesses - the way her eyes fall when another person leaves mid-conversation, the way she purses her lips thinking that she's said too much, the way her fingers clench the paper too hard at an A- rather than an A+. things like that. few know the innocent things she'll say, the questions that even elementary students know - things like sleepovers, nights of boba runs, and friends. in some ways, she's his elder - competent and mature. in others, she's younger - innocent still.
summary the crush and girl crush of just about the entire student body. she's well-loved but only from afar because they're too intimidated to actually talk to her. if they did, they'd see she's just an awkward turtle who thinks everyone hates her. she's the quiet but competent one - the one who sits in the corner unnoticed (once they get used to her looks and the gigantic sports bags she carries around for kendo and archery) but steps up to the plate and hits the home run. (metaphorically, of course.) it's odd to see her in the book club when she's so busy until you see the number of books she carries around and remember that she loves reading.

UNIVERSITY LIFE
general routine in the morning, mizuki gets up at 6 am sharp and goes out on a two-mile run. she quick-showers and lets her hair air dry while reading and drinking tea. she then leaves the dorm and goes to whatever classes she has that day, filling her free time. when she finishes her last class, she goes to the library or dorm and does all her homework - no procrastinating, amazing. if she has extra time, she fills it with more free time stuff. what's unusual to most people is that she doesn't party or anything but instead goes to sleep at 10 pm on the dot. she can function with only three hours of sleep but tries to be healthy and not do that every day.
grades / classes as a double major, mizuki has classes every weekday. she hasn't had a class she's disliked too much yet and she's good about keeping up with assignments, midterm dates, and such. her notes - which she always takes - are neat and easy-to-read, and she usually studies on her own or, on the rare occasion her not-cousin has the class too, with him. if she doesn't understand a topic, she's unafraid to ask the professor. she takes the maximum number of classes she can every quarter. she's only slightly salty about that one class she got a b+ in. it was because the t.a. lost one of her lab reports and gave her a zero. yeah, salty.
free time most of her free time is devoted to reading and studying because those grades and her brain don't just pop out of nowhere. she can also be found hanging around the club room or in the library or nearby cafes. she devotes a few hours on weekends to practicing archery or kendo and spends time with her older "cousin" when they can. they do anything from talking, reading, studying, just spending time at a cafe or even going on spontaneous photoshoots. (it isn't strange to see why people thought she was dating her older "cousin.") in contrast, she spends time with her other "cousin" throughout the week since they go to the same uni.
transition to korea although she's been to korea almost annually since she was old enough to ride on a plane and self-studying since around middle school, she never formally learned korean until now. ironically, her speaking - and pronounciation - is actually the worst because at one point she brute-force read korean novels until she could fluently understand them (her "cousins" always joke about how she could probably learn every language like that.) but she didn't practice saying it aloud so. she takes some time mentally translating what she's going to say but she's getting better. other than that, the transition to korea actually isn't that bad.
lit club joining the club was actually at the suggestion of her "cousin" who'd said it half-jokingly but half-seriously in an attempt to get her to make friends and stop hanging out with "just us. honestly." she thought it was a good idea since she liked reading and she wanted friends so. now if only she could get out of the corner and actually talk to people, maybe she'd finally make the friends she'd like. she'll get the courage to do so. eventually...right?
love life yeah, right now, she isn't even sure about her friendship life.
PLATFORM
friends-only kakao @yukimiki made to speak with her "cousins" even while in another country because yay wi-fi. only family so far in her contacts list. her icon is of a pile of her books.
fanmade insta @kisshoten made by her fans and run by the president of her on-campus fanclub. said president teamed up with president of her japanese fanclub to make it. consists of photos of her. has a large following. she's oblivious to it. her "cousins" want to close it.
PAIR YOU UP? yes
ideal type: someone who can make her laugh, enjoys reading like her, and is competent.
IMPORTANT PEOPLE
her older "cousin" aka her cheerleader lee jonghyun (28) protective, observant, sensitive
introducing the lawyer of the family and the one mizuki wants to be most like, jonghyun is what other's deem "perfect" - good-looking and successful with a great personality to boot. he's the eldest of the "cousins" so he has a strong sense of responsibility, especially for mizuki who's going to college in a new (ish) country. he's a gentleman and a bit old-fashioned so he treats mizuki gently but also knows to take her seriously since she isn't a kid. (he laughs when people think they're dating.) mizuki respects jonghyun a lot and goes to him for advice when possible but is aware of his flaws. they're like cute siblings and care for each other as family.
her other "cousin" aka why me lee howon (21) stoic, competent, hot-headed
the one who's always mistaken for a gangster (because his hip hop style and resting judging face don't help no one), howon (or hoya as pretty much everyone calls him) is actually sweet if not someone who prefers tough love. he hangs out with mizuki a lot because he also has few friends because his face. (he'd probably make more friends if he smiled.) mizuki and him just talk a lot and study together. they make fun of each other a lot too but in the end support each other. people were initially amazed when mizuki just walked up to him and talked to him no problem. he's jonghyun's real cousin and sees the elder male as both his goal and his rival.
president aka #didnotsignupforthis soon siwon (21) regretful, passive, kind
a lot of his thought processes when looking at her fall along the lines of "wow. she's pretty.", "why is she even here?", and "is she reading what i think she's reading?!" he doesn't actually have the energy (or guts) to speak to her but he's often amazed / confused that the school's idol is in his club like what even. he tries his best to treat her like any other group member, but yeah, he doesn't really understand why she's in this club rather than in archery or kendo. in contrast, she just kind of admires his passion for literature and laughs at his and the club's antics quietly. she usually just sits in the corner during club time. they don't talk much.
vp aka #youtotallydid lim taeyoung (20) energetic, stubborn, lazy
the exact words running through taeyoung's head when mizuki walked in was "wtf." her reaction was pretty much identical to siwon's otherwise. basically, everyone in the club is confused as to why mizuki is there. mizuki loves taeyoung's hair and made sure to compliment it on their first meeting. that comment was probably why mizuki is on taeyoung's good side and mizuki's biggest regret is that she didn't elongate the conversation more. they aren't necessarily close but they aren't on bad terms at the very least. mizuki thinks taeyoung and siwon's interactions together are the funniest and enjoys watching them when they talk.
supervisor aka club mom jeon naeun (late 20s?) diligent, intense, active
basically, mizuki respects her as a teacher but doesn't know her well. naeun sees mizuki just as a prettier-than-average member of the club. they haven't had significant interactions yet.
mascot aka the shy sweetheart mushu (??) cute, picky, spoiled
she thinks he's cute but won't ask to hold mushu first. she's waiting for mushu to come to her on his own and doesn't want to push him out of his comfort zone. his mind is harder to read.
siwon is conducting the interview in the club room because he feels the innate need to know all of the future members and taeyoung is too lazy but is nevertheless, enthusiastic about meeting new faces, so she's watching the both of you talk with mushu hanging in her hands. (the consultation is held before the general assembly and after recruitment week!)
Q1: SO, HELLO! MIZUKI, RIGHT? I'M SIWON, PRESIDENT OF THE LIT CLUB, HERE TO CONDUCT THE CONSULTATION. FIRST THING'S FIRST, HOW'S THE SEMESTER BEEN TREATING YOU?
her posture is straight and the slight smile curving her lips is captivating. "it's been well." the sentence is concise and amazingly gramatically correct if not accented. she does not elaborate. she doesn't mention how she has so much hope for this year, that she might make relationships outside of her family. it sounds weird, even in her head, and pitiful. she settles for smiling instead.
Q2: HUH, DON'T WE ALL. I'M QUITE SURPRISED ABOUT THE YEAR'S TURNOUT FOR LIT. NEVERTHELESS, THIS IS GREAT NEWS. TELL ME, WHY DID YOU JOIN LIT? WHAT DID YOU THINK WAS IT ABOUT?
"i'm joining to read." there is an implied but unspoken because i believe the club was about reading and again, she does not continue. she tucks a loose strand of hair behind her ear and she doesn't see the eyes that follow the elegant movement. she doesn't know why they're so quiet.
Q3: WOW. THAT'S... INTERESTING... HUH. WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FROM ME, TAEYOUNG, THE REST OF THE EXECUTIVE BOARD AND FROM LIT?
she shrugs. she doesn't really have any expectations from the club as a whole. but personal expectations. she wants to make friends, go on silly adventures, read more, just enjoy university.
Q4: THIS IS GOING TO BE A LITTLE STRAIGHTFORWARD, BUT. WHERE DOES LIT LIE IN YOUR PRIORITIES? WE HAVE ACADEMICS AND OTHER CLUBS, AFTER ALL. MAYBE LIST THEM FROM ONE TO THREE? AND UHM, WHY?
she pauses, thinks, and finally answers. "first is family. second is university. third is literature." family is and always will be first to her. university is important if only for her future. but literature is something for the now, she thinks. it is a chance to make friends, meet people, and perhaps have a normal conversation unconstrained by societal conventions. at least so she hopes anyways.
Q5: OKAY, THAT'S GOOD.. FINE, AT LEAST.. A FEW MORE QUESTION BEFORE I SEND YOU OFF, PHEW. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE FANTASTICAL CREATURE AND WHY? TAEYOUNG SAYS I SHOULD ASK THIS TO DEVELOP BONDS WITH YOU GUYS.
she pauses, tilts her head, thinks long and hard. "just one?" she pauses again. "i love them all, but thinking about it, i love tengu most." it is a japanese protective spirit and patron of martial arts.
Q6: THAT'S SWEET. PRETTY COOL CHOICE. ALSO, SPEAKING OF. THAT THING WITH TAEYOUNG. THE BLUE HAIRED GIRL. ON HER HANDS. THE YELLOW LIZARD. I HOPE YOU AREN'T SCARED OF CRESTED GECKOS. HE'S MUSHU AND YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO PULL HIM OUT OF HIS CAGE, YEAH? YEAH.
she glances at the adorable reptile and quietly wants to ask to hold him but no. she simply nods.
Q7: ALRIGHT, THAT'S ALL FOR TODAY. THANKS FOR SPARING US A BIT OF YOUR TIME. HOPEFULLY WE'LL BE SEEING YOU AROUND THE CLUB ROOM MORE? WE HAVE BEDS AND STUFF. SEE YOU ON THE ASSEMBLY!
she stands, bows politely, and leaves with another swift captivating smile. it was a good, if not quick, conversation. perhaps, she hopes, there will be more chances in the future to befriend.
edit: because i couldn't think of nice, age-appropriate japanese faceclaims off the top of my head (and being in a rush), i turned her into full japanese (to keep the nicknames) and made them into childhood friends / not-cousins-but-like-cousins cousins. (their relationships are still purely filial / platonic though.) i use not-cousin and "cousin" interchangeably but they both mean the same thing: that they aren't actually blood-related but act and grew up thinking they were and still feel like they are minus the whole different ethnicities and actual blood-related thing. thanks for liking her even though she's a low-key mess. i hope you enjoy using her!
