personality.  

stranger :: you look across the room and what in the world? there is a girl hunched over her desk, writing furiously and mumbling to herself too low to be overheard but loud enough to be an annoyance. the resident bad boy doesn't even stop her, simply casts her a glower and leaves. the teacher comes in, but the girl doesn't even look up. the teacher looks resigned. you ask your seat partner when you can. her name, you learn, is shizuko - half japanese, half-korean, and all around pain. you glance to her. yeah, you could see why. 

classmate :: when a certain alchemist grabs you because your water power for an "experiment," no one blinks. shizuko (or sooyeon as she also answers to) has asked many a person to participate and you know with a simple "no," she'll stop. there is, however, an appeal in glimpsing the going-ons of shizuko's head. she's mostly unintelligble mumbles and interspersed exclamations of versions of "eureka" that lead to her running out of class. hearing her speak now is one of the few time she's actually understandable to the rest of the human race. 

cousin :: you don't see your mad scientist of a cousin all that often but when you do, you can't help but wonder wtf god thought while creating someone as crazy as her. 'let me make a human as ing mad as me?' you wouldn't be surprised. you glance over the notebooks and papers, marked with circles and words of languages you didn't even know existed, scattered everywhere. it would admirable if you actually cared for her. as it is, the papers and scribbles are just annoying, reminders to that first visit so long ago. sh*t. you leave. 

best friend :: shizuko has finally deemed you worthy, in that she's finally pulled herself out of her alchemy circle-creating binges to get food, sleep, and healthy human interaction (not in that order). at this time, she's doing two - food and friendship - at once. you smile as she speaks. how can anyone not want to befriend this girl? the one who reads your mood with a mere glance and just knows. the one who pushes aside all projects for you. the one who adores research, discoveries, "what if"s as much as she loves to help people and give. 

tl;dr :: a girl who mostly keeps to herself - and keeps on mumbling to herself - her cousin has rightfully deemed her "the mad scientist," which she is. she oft goes on science-magic binges where she neglects things "not as important" until she resurfaces. most of the time that's all people see but underneath her tunnel vision and attitude is a careful, brilliant eye; she desires to help people with her abilities and has the brains to do so. (of course, she'd be better off she could stop with innocently pointed out hurtful truths in promoting her work.)

background.  

once upon a time :: shizuko was born in japan one rainy morning, an aquarius indeed. her parents moved to korea once she hit first grade (age seven), but otherwise, there was nothing particularly remarkable about her family or upbringing. if anything, it was shizuko, who preferred books to games and loved oldest books best, who was peculiar. later, her parents jokingly blamed her strange yet amusing hobby of old book-finding for her discovery, interest, and subsequent talent in magic - to be specific, in the science-magic of alchemy.

do you believe in magic :: when she was nine, almost ten, she went on her usual old book-finding adventure and was recommended a certain book by an old storekeeper. (to this day, she doesn't know who that was and hasn't seen her at the store since then.) it was, she found, a grimoire. she was entranced and though her parents indulged her, they (nor she) expected that the alchemy circle to reuse old candles would work. it opened doors, and though she learned about other topics, nothing else seemed to be as riveting as alchemy. 

this girl is on fire :: she was eleven when her only aunt, uncle, and cousin visited. she'd just finished a fascinating book on the history of sacrifices in the americas when she came out to see her living room curtains on fire. it was put out but was still smoking and definitely unsalvagable. she stared, found the well-equipped, barely-touched sewing kit, and brought it back with a paper and marker. she drew an alchemy circle (since her unwritten magic was a wip) and restored the curtains. next thing she knew, her cousin was living with them. 

do what you want to do :: during high school, shizuko lamented what she'd do in the future. (she was debating between scientist and a bookstore owner.) nothing, however, stuck out to her. that was when something out of harry potter happened - an owl tapped on her bedroom window. she blinked. so did the owl, with what was clearly an envelope in its beak. she let it in. the owl dropped off the packet and then flew off. it was an invitation to silver lake academy - an introduction packet and application to enroll. in short, she did.

school house rock :: attending silver lake academy was a wild ride. for the school. they were unprepared for the whirlwind that is amaya shizuko. at first, they were very much strict on her - go to class, do homework, blah blah blah. shizuko, as they found out, did not listen. the class president (her current best friend) suggested she petition for special permission. she showed the principal her projects and exceeding knowledge, gaining special permission. as a result, the teachers are exasperated but accepting of shizuko's...unique presence.

exceptions and permissions :: special exemption from a class's assignments and attendance policies. grade based completely on her performance on midterms and finals. with professor's permission, can completely test out of a class and use the period as a self-study period. with professor's permission, can also take classes higher than her grade if she's interested in the subject. special access to all books in the library. to graduate, has to release a dissertation based on her magic findings. also will release a book of simple, useful alchemy circles.

her performance so far :: basically goes to class, leaves whenever she wants (whenever she comes up with another idea or has a breakthrough), and sits in the back ignoring the professor unless she's interested in the lesson / subject. professors either hate her or love her because she's frustratingly unattentive or the most knowledgeable but curious student they have had in years. to pass the exams and such, she basically reads through the textbook the day before. with that much effort, she gets a c. more studying leads to higher grades.

most of the time, seungyeon is out and about, avoiding shizuko whereas shizuko would be a hypocrite, what with her knowledge binges, to try and tell seungyeon what to do and why. they rarely cross paths at home or in sla. most of the time, shizuko is simply called to restore whatever has been burned. when they do meet each other, they may or may not greet each other. no one actually seems to realize that they're related because of how different they are - their powers included - and just how little they interact.

the only one who stuck with shizuko during the disastrous early days, joohyun (or seohyun as most of her other friends call her) is shizuko's one and only friend. she's a sweetheart, honestly, and one of the few people who has enough patience to get past shizuko's science-magic binges to get to know her. when shizuko emerges from her "lab," joohyun is always there to help her reintegrate with the "other humans." conversely, shizuko is protective over joohyun and cares deeply for her well-being and happiness.

what are your weaknesses. 
i'm limited to the world around me. i can't create things out of thin air and what i can form is limited based on my own knowledge. furthermore, there are certain rules of alchemy you must respect. to break these taboos is equivalent to giving your life and humanity. we aren't gods and shouldn't try to be.
what are your strengths. 
i am rather versatile and can create a surprising number of objects. drawing alchemy circles makes my magic more stable but i can also do without them. there's a lot more elements in our daily lives than most people realize, all of which i can use.

how important are the other students at your school to you. 
they're as important as any other human being on this earth. the two that i believe are the most important to me are seungyeon and joohyun. 
if you had to choose between your friend or a complete innocent stranger, who would you save. why. 
logically, i know i should save whoever i can since one life has equal weight with another, but honestly i'd prioritize my friend because her life. has a heavier weight emotionally in my life than the stranger.

if the only to save the world called for sacrifice, what would you sacrifice. 
depends. i want to say everything since the world can function without certain components, namely me, but i don't fully grasp my limits as an individual to place the world over people as in utilitarianism.
