ELABORATION —
i can give you the world, only if you come to me.
to start with, she's a precious cinnamon bun. her cheery and endearing personality radiates warmth. with a positive outlook in life, jinyeon firmly believes the good in people instead of their worst. kind and true to her heart, she tries her best to help anyone in anyway she can, eventhough sometimes its none of her business. she views everyone as the same, human beings who deserves love and care no matter what they are like. a go-with-the-flow kind of person, living her life as best as she could. "no point to dwell in the past anyways". jinyeon is more of a stress reliever, there for you to empty out your problems. that type of bystander with warm sparkling eyes that makes you want to pour out a heartfelt confession. she carries a safe aura that with her, eventhough you don't know her you can't help but feel protected. she goes wherever her heart takes her. jinyeon is highly intuitive, and likes to predict the possible outcomes of situations she is in. doesn't say much, but is there when you need her. has a knack of sensing other people's feelings, what they are like on the inside. the way she looks on the outside makes her look as if she does not know anything, for she always has this dazed innocent look but she knows, she's aware. she lets you trample over her but won't trample back. most people would know her as that really precious small fluff but that's about it, no one actually knows what she's like beside that. actually quite hyper but knows when to tone it down. she'll approach you in a happy bubbly manner. though, despite being friendly and sociable, making friends with anyone she meets, she doesn't actually have many true friends. like she's that person who floats around and doesn't have her feet firmly planted on the ground. extrovert exterior with introvert interior.
expressive and imaginative, she views the world through a kaleidoscope. that is to say, she views the world in many ways, many colours. the world is a great mystery to her, a puzzle she tries to solve. her never-ending curiosity to pretty much everything can be quite too much at times, for jinyeon likes learning new things everyday. to others, eventhough she seems friendly and approachable, at times she can appear to look cool, guarded. for jinyeon shares her heart with the people she truly holds dear. deeply values other people's differences, she fights on for what she believes is right. can seem funnily awkward, but that is her way of getting to know people more. individualistic and mature, jinyeon deals what she can with her best try. not one to dump her problems on someone. she waits until she truly needs help. jinyeon is someone who is grateful for small things in life. a lively and carefree person with a cheery approach. she's cheery not in an annoying, too much kind of way but she's cheery because that's who she is. a truly happy, lively person who values little details and small appreciations like having your parents come home early from work for once, having your sister unexpectedly treat you ice cream to cheer you up even when you told her you failed your exam, etc. for one key trait of jinyeon : mumbling incoherently. whenever she's excited or her enthusiasm is aroused, she starts to speak gibberish, rambling on as if she's an engine with no breaks. she is quite open with what she thinks, how she feels and can get quite carried away. "sorry, i babbled on again didn't i?"
quite dreamy and cloudheaded. when jinyeon starts to think about something deeply, she detaches herself and retreats to space, aka her vague imagination. innocently naive like a child, ignores what she wants to ignore, eventhough deep down she knows. like a rose that bleeds and still grows even when thorns pierce through, she endures and moves on. yet she can only endure so much before her sensitve heart breaks her apart. the world, and people, can be overwhelming jinyeon to the point she slowly starts to shut herself down, withdrawing to her personal world. no matter, for she will bounce back again in time. the type of person that is easily impressed, and easily swayed. when things became too much for her to handle, her passion can die down, causing her to drift around aimlessly. sometimes people are too complex and difficult for her to handle. she understands feelings, but does not really know what to do. this causes her to feel guilty whenever she cannot help someone, and in turn jinyeon stuffs her mind with what ifs and possibilities of what may happen if she were to choose differently. not the type to fight back. she wants to but she just can't bring herself to do it. "my voice would not be heard anyways". so she broods instead. its easy to know when jinyeon feels negative because her cheery attitude, despite being there, is subdued. doesn't really fight for herself but fights for other people. really protective towards things she holds dear. when a thought, or anything, something, caughts jinyeon's attention, she would not stop to think about it. she overthinks, and as her paranoid mind projects negativities, jinyeon becomes a mess. she thinks too far ahead sometimes. she sets her standards high up, causing her to strive for the best. multiple times she would repeat a choreography until she's satisfied as the night and hours blurs past. she fears of people's judgement towards her, believing that she is never enough.
tl;dr
a flower being blown away by the wind.
a flower being blown away by the wind.
HISTORY —
jinyeon doesn't really have clear memories of her past. her mind is one big blank canvas with vague memories and flashbacks whenever she dwells on the past. she never knew her real parents, as they left her without a trace. never once did they sent a letter or a postcard, anything. maybe they left me because i am not good enough, i am not good enough for them to stay. a statement which jinyeon came to believe throughout the years. then came that one phase of her life ; that one memory where its hazy but still there. one thing jinyeon remembers vividly from her memories of the orphanage she used to be in ; cozy. a large house and lots of kids around her age, younger and even older ones, running around carelessly. everything else seems to blur around in a hazy dream. jinyeon cannot recall the kind old woman who owns the orphanage, or the kids she used to play with. but she does remember the smell of the owner's signature kimchi, sleeping in the floor with her blanket that smelled like strawberries, etc. she remembers how one by one, the kids around her starts to disappear. they are now in a happy place surrounded with people who loves them dearly, the owner would say whenever jinyeon asks where her friends went. jinyeon's turn soon came. and that ends her journey in the orphanage. jinyeon left incheon with her new family. goodbye to the only home i know, jinyeon thinks as the shin's drive away from the house that jinyeon grew up in for the first 4 years of her life.
the shin's where everything jinyeon could dream of. they were a wealthy family, not that rich but rich enough to own an apartment in gangnam. moving from one familiar place to a completely unfamiliar surrounding took an effect on jinyeon. it was difficult for her to open up, and she did not speak at all, only nods and shrugs, a couple of words at most. it took her a while for her to gradually warm up. jinyeon was a simple child who never asked for anything. kyungna was the first person jinyeon opens up to. at first jinyeon pushed away kyungna's constant attempt in befriending jinyeon. it was from a hide and seek to running around the house screaming in laughter that broke the wall separating the two of them. jinyeon slowly lets the shin's in to her heart, and for once she felt happy and truly loved.
young jinyeon was not particularly interested in anything when she was younger for she usually follows what kyungna does. kyungna was interested in music, and so jinyeon became interested in music as well. unlike kyungna who plays the piano and guitar, jinyeon was interested in drums. thus she received daily drum lessons and occasionally tags along kyungna's piano and guitar lessons. jinyeon goes to school and lives her life just like any other kids her age.
at the young blossoming age of 11, jinyeon got scouted by a fantagio staff when she was on an ice cream celebratory date with kyungna. jinyeon was flabbergasted, so to say. kyungna had to hold jinyeon in place so she would not runaway. in jinyeon's eyes the stranger who offered her a card and suggested her to try and go for an audition in fantagio is downright scary, when really he's just eager to scout and find new trainees for fantagio. jinyeon's parents were happy for her, contrast to what jinyeon's expectations of her parents' disapproving her of auditioning. jinyeon decides to give it a shot, since there's nothing to lose, and she's pretty much sure that she won't get accepted. she auditioned by showing her immense drum skills and average singing. but the world must have been playing with jinyeon that day, for she got accepted.
for a girl who never had interest nor practice in singing, dancing or rapping (except if singing along off-key to radio songs or doing silly dance wars with an older sister), jinyeon did horrible. at first. she wasn't used to so much dancing, moving her body and using her voice more than she used it in a day. jinyeon's first decision was to immediately leave but her family supported her, suggesting her to try and enjoy it. who knows maybe jinyeon might change her mind. so jinyeon does what her family suggested her to do. it took a while for jinyeon to adapt, but soon she went with the flow. jinyeon knew that she doesn't possess a great voice, so she reverts to rapping instead. her dancing was still poorly developed. training became something mandatory that jinyeon must go through, unlike the trainees who are there because they wanted to chase their dreams. tbh, jinyeon's family doesn't really mind if jinyeon quits for they support whatever decision she makes, but jinyeon felt like if she quit she might disappoint her family so she continued to be a trainee in fantagio. she did not have any goals to be an idol back then, and was a trainee who aimlessly trains with no actual purposes. as jinyeon's time passes by in fantagio, only then did she realize how she enjoyed training. sure, it was hell at first, but jinyeon learned something new everyday, gaining a new skill if she tries hard. jinyeon did try from scratch, but compared to the beginning where she spent half of the time frowning upon difficult dance moves to now, she improved. jinyeon did improve, albeit slowly. though it seems her little improvement was no use to fantagio, for after one bad monthly evaluation jinyeon was cutten off from fantagio.
jinyeon auditioned again. she wasn't ready to let go of her newfound dreams yet. jinyeon tried auditioning in jellyfish, starship and cube. she was accepted by cube ent. by this time jinyeon became more steadfast in her dreams. she improved more and tries harder than when was in fantagio. her dancing improved, and she's able to become more fluid in dancing compared to last time. jinyeon was now more focused in rapping, and actually found an interest there. she starts experimenting in making a few raps and lyrics here and there. nothing much but its a start. the only thing that was on jinyeon's mind besides school and training was her parents' behaviour. they look more tired and restless than usual. jinyeon shares this concern with kyungna and the both of them confronted their parents, but they brushed the matter off, telling their children not too worry and focus on their school (and training for jinyeon) instead. cube was jinyeon's second company, and jinyeon allowed herself to dream the impossible ; her debut. she hopes that cube will be her last company for she does not want to audition again. cube was quite busy with btob, who's fame is slowly rising, and during that time apink peaked the charts. cube's female trainees's slowly disappears, along with their dreams. its gonna be a while until cube debuts a girlgroup and some trainees aren't that patient, incuding jinyeon. jinyeon decides to quit cube.
part of her wanted to stop looking for companies to audition, but another part of her wants to keep trying. by this time it was noticeable that jinyeon's parents are hiding something, but they refused to let their daughters know. jinyeon's will, which was on the verge of collapsing, was revived again by her family's support. with a new hope and a more determined will, jinyeon prepares herself to audition in pledis. with past failed experiences, jinyeon learned her lesson ; she must always try harder and improve. in pledis, jinyeon gave it her all. and like a flower, she slowly starts to bloom. her past trainee experiences helped her in improving her skills. jinyeon gradually developed better than the previous. with each passing year, jinyeon became more better and better. if jinyeon were to look back on her first time training, she made quite an improvement. training went on okay. it was her personal life that took a turn. the secret jinyeon's parents had been harboring for the past year was out ; her parents' business did not do well. they were losing clients, and had a few debts that were yet to be paid. her parents' were slowly losing employees. the shin's were slowly losing their house. it all crashed down one day. jinyeon came back from school to find orange flames engulfing her house. it was a house a few houses down on the left that started the fire, and eventually it spread through the neighbourhood. jinyeon was thankful that no one was at home. yet there's a piece of her that was broken. the house where she grew up in, where she met her family, was gone. her parents packed her bags and kyungna's, for jinyeon and her sister will be living in her grandparents and aunt's home in the countryside, chungju. while her parents will be going overseas to find a job. it was a tearful goodbye. her parents promised to come and visit, yet jinyeon still feels like she lost a part of her heart. her family's problems took a slump in jinyeon's training. with her current condition, jinyeon cannot focus. she misses dance steps, her rapping wasn't as hardcore as before. instructors constantly tells her to focus. having enough, jinyeon steps out of pledis. it was too much for her to handle, especially with what happened.
kyungna was jinyeon's sole support back then, along with her aunt and grandparents. jinyeon did not do much, only improving in making songs and raps. her hands twitch and her body aches for the familiar training she usually goes through back when she was a trainee, but jinyeon held herself back. not now, she told herself over and over again. the urge became stronger as kyungna scols jinyeon for giving up easily, motivating her to audition again. with the reminder of her parents, who are out there struggling to build back the family's economic state, jinyeon finally gives in. no matter how far you strayed, sooner or later you'll always come back to the right path and continue to chase your dreams. brand new music became jinyeon's 4th and last chance. she wanted to focus more on improving her rapping, thus with some researched, bnm came to her mind. this was it ; if BNM won't grant her debut, jinyeon is leaving the training life behind. it was difficult to adjust since as of now jinyeon lives in the countryside so she had to take a train back and forth from bnm to her aunt's house. jinyeon resumed her training life as usual.
during her time in bnm, jinyeon was chosen by bnm to participate in a survival show called produce 101. initially jinyeon did not want to, for she feels she cannot bear the emotional and physical stress the show might cause. in the end, she didn't have much of a choice for bnm already agreed with mnet and cj&em to send one of their trainees. not long after the show ends, jinyeon soon left bnm. 4 times moving companies and never being granted the chance of debuting, plus the scars produce 101 was too overwhelming. there's no point in chasing your dreams if its never going to come true. with that, jinyeon waves goodbye to the entertainment world and returns to her personal life. on a side note her parents were doing well, and though they did visit jinyeon and her sister a couple of times, they won't be coming until a year or two later. all is well, until woo yeni contacts jinyeon. and thus, jinyeon is pulled back to the world she was once familiar with.
RELATIONSHIPS —
• we're not related, but i love them as my own - shin kangmin and shin eunseol - 46 - teacher and factory employee
they were always there for her. sometimes jinyeon wonders if she saved the world from from destruction to receive such wonderful adoptive parents. they treated jinyeon with equal love. if only they were my real parents, a thought jinyeon would often dwell on. as owners of a company that works on the textile business, much of kangmin and eunseol’s time were focused on growing their business. they did not neglect their daughters, and often takes them out on fun getaways like camping in the woods. they are supportive, good parents who puts their children first. when their business starts to plummet down, they worked extra hours just to keep everything together. little by little, their business they worked hard to build from scratch breaks apart. jinyeon’s parents went overseas to find jobs that can pay their debts and build back their financial state. they never wanted to leave jinyeon and kyungna behind. eventhough distance separates jinyeon and her parents, they always cheered her on. secret phone calls with her parents during her stressful time in produce 101 were one of the things that kept her going.
they will return, eventually. jinyeon looks forward to the day she welcomes her parents back in her arms. until then, she can only communicate with her parents and see them face to face through a screen.
• the roots to my tree - shin kyungna - 22 - university student
kyungna was one of the first ones to approach tiny jinyeon back then. never giving up no matter how many times jinyeon pushed her away. they bonded through a game of wild hide and seek. since then kyungna was jinyeon's #1 fan, her best friend, the one whom jinyeon becomes herself with. kyungna is actually quite scary and intimidating on the outside, but she's soft for jinyeon. a genius at school, she often tutors jinyeon in her studies. kyungna was the one who made up comfort dates, which basically consists of a tub of ice cream in one hand while binge-watching animes, dramas, movies, anything. jinyeon loves comfort dates, for kyungna secretly made it up just to cheer jinyeon up when she's down. kyungna likes to take jinyeon on an ice cream treat whenever she received a good score in her exam, throughout jinyeon's time in produce 101, kyungna became her rock, the one she would go to when she's in need of comfort. kyungna dislikes the hate that falls upon jinyeon, wishing to personally terrorize each hater in their dreams. though the two are not related by blood, they have a bond that's unbreakable.
• i'll follow you until the end of the world - woo yeni - 19 - member of young nation
woo yeni is someone jinyeon looks up to. she's pretty and oozes an aura that you can't help but feel attracted to. at first jinyeon felt intimidated and slightly scared of yeni, when really yeni is a precious ball of sunshine. she's someone jinyeon trusts, someone who makes jinyeon want to be a better version of herself.
their encounter begins from an accidental meeting in a ramen shop. jinyeon was in seoul, currently on a school holiday break. the shop's owners were already familiar with jinyeon, who frequently eats ramen there during her time as a trainee. a while after jinyeon finished eating and left, she was approached by yeni. what was jinyeon's first reaction when yeni asked if she's shin jinyeon who placed 20th on produce 101? run away. jinyeon was all "nope" but her heart says otherwise. jinyeon's not sure to take upon the offer or not, for she did not want to go back to the world she waved goodbye to. but maybe, just maybe, jinyeon was glad that yeni found her. the longing she felt in her heart, the missing piece she felt was now whole again. maybe deep down, jinyeon never truly waved goodbye to the entertainment world.
