PERSONALITY —
'he has the brains... he just doesn't like using the brawn' a northern water tribe villager. jak is not exactly the most passionate fighter around. he doesn't like to directly inflict harm on another person so you'll usually find him talking strategy with the general. a rational thinker, he likes to think things through thoroughly and organise his thoughts before acting upon them. jak's one to avoid conflict and will take any path available to do so. he doesn't like being confronted, nor does he like doing the confronting. i wouldn't call him cowardly, though. he just knows that confrontations are, more often than not, the wrong way to solve situations. along with this non-confrontational attitude, jak's quite receptive. open-minded and a great listener, he knows not to limit himself and is able to explore a variety of different opinions and ideas from those around him. he's extremely creative and always has a unique way to solve issues presented to him, using his surroundings to his advantage through his obvservant eyes and analytical processing. jak's never out of ideas and this can be reflected through his ability to come up with new stories every day and creation of weird gadgets out of whatever he sees lying around.

'even the brightest can fall victim to the darkness' a village elder. it's no secret that jak's just a little different to all the other guys in the northern water tribe. how is it that everyone else is so ready and willing to throw away their lives away for the good of the tribe? i mean, he loves his home, but would he gladly sacrifice himself? probably not. he's always self-conscious about this but doesn't like to reveal all his deeper thoughts to anybody. he's not someone who can clearly express what he's feeling at any given time and often buries away his emotions, despite his sensitivity to everyones actions around him, choosing to remain neutral and put up a false front for the children to see. for the most part, he's very objective. he doesn't let these emotions get in the way of his thinking and is as unbiased as you can get. he looks at things rationally and from a third-person staindpoint. he knows his faults and frankly speaking, it's highly probably that he's more true to himself than his fellow warriors are to themselves. i mean, why would you throw away your life so easily? why are you living to conform to what other people say? he's able to think for himself, something that the other warriors aren't really able to do.

'deep thoughts are our strengths. at times, they are also our downfalls' his mother. despite how placid and agreeing he may seem, jak's quite the non-conformist. he doesn't want to just blindly follow authorative figures. he's very observant and a deep thinker, always questioning why people are acting the way they are, what their true motives are and just why is the world the way it is? straightforward and honest, he can come off a little harshly when he's explaining his viewpoint, but it's just him getting straight to the point to avoid any misunderstandings. more often than not, jak will be on the sidelines rather than in the midst of a fight. but, he has indeed changed recently. following the conquering of the northern water tribe by the fire nation, jak's evolved slightly. still generally calm and rational, he has become quite restless. his loyalty to his tribe has made its appearance, especially when his loved ones are in the face of danger. though self critical with his constant criticisms for himself, he's also too altruistic and surprisingly (even shocking himself) will jump forward to protect thoes he cares about. he puts others before himself.

BACKGROUND —  
a son to continue on with the tradition. in jak's family, it's an honour to be born a son. really bad thinking, i know, but it's a fact. a male water-bender is highly thought of and as soon as he's old enough, he is to be sent to be a northern water tribe warrior. following the birth of two daughters, his father, kirrilka, was the most excited when jak was born. finally! a son! unfortunately for him, it was like he had yet another daughter. jak was more a pacifist than a fighter and despite kirrilka's most desperate attempts, the little boy would not pick up the knife to skin the seal. jak was extremely used to the disappointment that was always evident on kirrilka's face (despite his futile attempts to hide it) and would always try to be a better son for him but to no prevail as his facade would always disappear the moment he had to harm someone or something else.

a creator not a destroyer. jak had always preferred to create rather than destroy. he solved things in his own way, and always walked to the beat of his own drum. rather than killing the seal to take its skin for tents, he would find random materials here and there and make his own tent. to compensate for not being all that into fighting, he would go against his conscience (that little voice in his head that said no! don't do it) to impress his father. jak would create weapons for kirrilka to bring to the northern water tribe warriors. weird contraptions and abstract objects would find their way into the warriors' hands and kirrilka would glow with pride. the happiness jak felt when his father was ecstatic was something he always wanted to feel. jak believed his father was finally satisfied and not upset that his son wasn't a warrior.

a northern water tribe warrior in his own way. it was sometime before his fifteenth birthday that jak overheard his father confiding with his mother about how he still wished jak was a fighter, not a straggler. now clearly seeing how he would never be good enough for his father, jak ultimately decided that the only way to win over kirrilka's approval was to join the warriors. so, that's what he did. on his fifteenth birthday, he declared his intentions and a broad smile appeared on kirrilka's face. rather than being a fighter for them though, he became their strategiser, someone to talk to the general about the best way to approach situations. he also continued to create weapons. following the conclusion of a his shifts, jak would go to the nearby village and tell stories to the children. this went on until the fire nation infiltrated. 

SKILLS — 
water, a friend not an enemy. he's a water bender. he may not be all willing to harm people, but he can defend himself and his father (who was a master) made sure that jak was able to manipulate water to do his bidding. jak would also ask his older sisters to teach him how to use water to heal. all in all, he's pretty efficient at water bending and can easily heal and defend himself with it. actually fighting is another story, though. he's a defender not an attacker. jak's also an inventor, able to create useful things for whatever purpose intended.

from utilising water to look after people, jak will eventually use it as a weapon against people who have harmed his loved ones. though down in the dumps after the first time he harms someone, he'll see that it's necessary to fight not just with his brain but also with his bdoy. jak will also learn to love himself more and become stronger, both mentally and physically.
