Sneak peek (Sekai)

The arrow fit snuggly in Sehun’s hand, like an extension of his fingers. He looked around, as he took small, quiet steps, making sure not to make himself too noticeable. Dry leaves where crunching ever so slightly under his feet, and he honestly thought he could do without, but nature was nature, and there wasn’t much he could do about it. Besides, he always liked a challenge.

He wasn’t after big animals. It was late, and he knew he’d end up completely wasting a life if he shot a deer tonight.  Besides, he already had a squirrel in his bag, he didn’t need much more.

Sehun froze in his tracks when he heard rustling, slowly turning his head in direction of the noise. And, there he saw it, on the ground. Its brown and golden plumage would have rendered him quasi-invisible against the dry leaves, if it weren’t for the color of its head. It was a rich red,  fading into royal blue and cyan. The bird’s long tail made it look majestic. Those feathers look beautiful, Sehun thought to himself.

A small smiled pulled his lips up as he positioned his bow in front of him, nocking the arrow. He then drew it back, eyebrows furrowed in concentration as the string pressed into his chin and nose. Sehun closed his left eye and aimed at the bird, took a deep breath, then released the arrow. It flew straight ahead of him, cutting through the air, and pierced right through the pheasant’s skull. It went down with a shriek. Clean shot.

Sehun approached the bird and picked it up, satisfied. This would, indeed, make a good meal. He tossed it in the bag he’d brought and slung it over his shoulder.

The forest was always nice and inviting, like a second home to him. In fact, he’d built his very own kitchen by the stream, as well as a shelter so he could spend time away from the village whenever he felt like he needed to breathe. Maybe it was because he’d been abandoned there, in the woods. It had to be that.

The boy was mindlessly humming a song, and his steps weren’t as careful anymore, as he wasn’t focusing on trying not to scare animals away.  However, he heard footsteps at some point. He naturally froze and listened. His eyebrows furrowed in confusion. It didn’t sound like an animal, but he nocked his arrow, just in case, and followed the noise.
