IT'S MORPHIN TIME, 이수미!
FEEL IT DIFFERENTLY, LOOK AT IT DIFFERENTLY
EVEN IF IT FEELS LIKE YOU'RE WALKING AROUND IN CIRCLES
on the one hand, sumi is the team's little ray of sunshine. she may not be the sharpest tool in the shed - in fact, if she didn't have to be passing all of her classes for track, she'd probably be flunking - but she's definitely the brightest crayon in the box. the smile she almost always has on her face is always, always genuine; it's not hiding any deep emotional pain, or that sad of a backstory. it just takes a lot to get her down. as long as her little brothers are safe and the track is open, that smile will stay. and this whole "being a yellow, extinct cat-themed superhero who gets to save the world" thing? she's honestly pretty excited by it. she's no happy virus - that implies that her positivity spreads to other people, rather than just annoying them, though her skill at finding the light in dark times is occasionally appreciated - but she also doesn't need the approval of those other people to be happy. she only needs to please herself - not the track coach, not the other rangers or zordon, not her teachers. lee sumi, for better or for worse, is lee sumi's number one priority. (actually, her younger brothers are her number one priority, but unfortunately, the fact that the're both seven makes it hard for her to focus on them all the time. until then, her own well-being does pretty nicely.) in the end, sumi's just a teenage girl who wants to have fun - with all the good and bad that comes with that.
speaking of younger brothers, though? it's around little kids where sumi's at her maximum. she's surprisingly responsible, for somebody who loses herself in thought as much as sumi does (spoiler alert: this happens often, and it's yet another facet of her personality that annoys the hell out of the other rangers). she's extremely protective of her younger siblings, and she loves spending time with them - play-fighting, playing video games, racing, watching anime...those kids mean the world to her. the only time you'll see sumi be anything aside from positive or confused is when her siblings are in danger, in which case that joy is replaced by seething rage. it is a rare sight, but it is glorious.
of course, sumi isn't just an yellow, extinct cat-themed superhero; she's a yellow, extinct cat-themed superhero in a team of superheroes of various colors and extinct animals. and sumi? she might be a school athlete, but she sure as hell isn't a team player. the other rangers were chosen for a reason; they wouldn't have been picked if they couldn't handle themselves, right? she doesn't know much about alpha and zordon, but she's seen enough movies to know that robots and giant, floating heads = smart. the other rangers don't need her help, and so, sumi will not give it to them. she simply doesn't like working together with people. she's not the type to hang out with the other rangers outside of battle unless she has to - and she keeps having to, much to her annoyance. if she could defeat every putty and monster by herself, you bet she would. sadly, she can't. that, combined with her frequently inappropriate happiness and general lack of knowledge, means that she ends up fighting with the other rangers a lot. she also operates on two extremes, much to the team's annoyance - she's either distressingly vague in her speech ("you're late to training!" "yeah, stuff was happening.") or too blunt for her own good ("sumi, you need to take this seriously." "i just don't really care about it, is all!"). she'll admit it when she messes up - sumi is a firm believer in owning up to her mistakes - and she's only really stubborn about working solo, but she still messes up a lot thanks to her own selfish nature.
(tl;dr: as cheerful as sumi is, and though she's a great older sister, she also is your friend's chaotic neutral dnd character who has no reason to be going on this team-based adventure, and she's also not said team's smartest member.)
BECAUSE I LOVE MYSELF, BECAUSE I'M SO ME
sumi was born on june 15th in seoul. aside from her father leaving at the age of four and the subsequent arrival of her mother's boyfriend (and the father of her brothers), lee namgi, nothing of much relevance has happened in sumi's life. she lives with her mother, nam eunkyung, and her brothers, sugeun and sukyung, in a small house in seoul; she helps out at a bakery after school on thursdays and fridays, for payment and free pastries, and she always looks forward to track season in the spring semester, because track is her life. the 5000km is her favorite event, and when she grows up, she wants to be a track coach.
THIS TIME IS SO BEAUTIFUL
aside from her younger brothers, sumi's best friend is allison lee, another student at angel grove, and a fellow member of the track team. allison is the naru to sumi's usagi - eternally more mature and pretty understanding of her bestie's weird new schedule, if a little jealous of all these new people sumi is hanging out with.
sumi is currently single, and though she's not exactly out of the closet, she's not completely in it, either. she's really affectionate with her female friends - allison included, though those two are completely platonic - and she just casually rejects any male suitors she may have. her mother has already pretty much realized that her daughter is gay, and she'll be fine with it when sumi comes out to her, whenever that day may come.
her fighting style isn't the most aggressive - she's more agile than she is strong, and she has no martial arts experience at all - but her stamina is something to be lauded; she can't do much damage with each hit, but she can land a lot of hits without getting even remotely tired. (thanks, track!)
+more to be added.
