Analysis to Monster MV

I don’t think it was baekhyun betraying them as I read in so many theories, so that’s why I decided to write this.

(How is it betrayal? I don’t even know)

This is off-topic, but I need to talk about this first. If we were to link between monster MV and lucky one, they either;

  1. Become what they are now, monstrous and under control of a big organization like animals. They are not themselves due to the modification that happened to their bodies in Lucky One. (As if Lucky one happened before monster)

    or

  2. They have always been under-control and they hate it and they want to break free. They want to be themselves! So they did that uprising and Baekhyun volunteered to be the one helping them hoping to return the old good memories they had, but that wasn’t the end. They were caught and the things in Lucky one happened. (As if monster happened before lucky one)

I will now discuss things as if monster happened before, and they were able to  escape in lucky one after they accepted their own selves, their powers they were born with. Instead of concealing it like they’re taught their entire life in this imaginative origination.

Baekhyun helped them all, yes, but then, the organization put all its focus on him after they caught them all and brought to that asylum or hospital in lucky one. ‘He was the only one we saw unconscious, and all the others weren’t. And he was the only one we saw the nurses use a needle with. They injected him with something but they didn’t do this with any of the members, knowing he was different.’

Somethings we should focus on in this video; colors, if it was B&W or not, and if the person is looking at the camera or not. (It’s just a theory and I don’t expect any of the things I would suggest to be 100% true)

First thing: The Snake Scene

  •  The snake scene is not necessary indicating betrayal as I read in most of the theories. It might be, yes, but there are many things that can be used to portray ‘betrayal’.  Snakes represent the dual expression of good and evil. We all know that every human being has these two inside. Snake also can represent rebirth and regeneration, and it can also mean guardianship in some cultures.

So, in the music video, the snake could mean that they are changing, and they are becoming something else, as ‘Rebirth’ in a new shape with new strength. (to me, this makes more sense than betrayal; because I don’t see how baekhyun did the betrayal, he was disguised as a guard to fool those controlling them, and that tells nothing)

Let’s say they were locked away, and have been mistreated their entire life for their powers they’r born with. Society didn’t accept them, instead, it feared them. Under this imaginative organization I decided it exists, they were shaped to become people they’re not. They were taken advantages of, they can’t express themselves, they can’t say what they want. (this might point at real incidents with matching scenarios)

At the end of the video they became more violent only because they’re seeking relief and freedom.

I think it could be as simple as this.

Before we discuss anything; - We’d see so many things that only tell us the process of time; whether it’s present or a flashback -

(Like the rolex watch that was flying. In one scene it was anti-clockwise, and the other which was at the very end of the video, it was moving normally; clockwise

Now, we will discuss nearly every scene of the video:

As the video begins, we see Baekhyun alone in the dining room and it shifts to  a scene of hands with chains and sehun’s wounded face. It means it is the present, where they’re caught, and Baekhyun is not. He simply wasn’t with them when the uprising happened.

Sehun was looking out of the window, as if expecting something. And in 0:16, the snake comes.

image
  • What was he looking at? The snake?
  • Or he was just thinking about his decision?
  • Or he is looking at the cameras always following them and he was there to tell them he came while the others didn’t?
  • Is the snake representing the authority?
  • Or was it something to make it easier for us to understand that all of them are changing and that was it? (and especially baekhyun?)

The only thing we can detect here is, baekhyun was aware of things hence the looking. ‘At the camera and around’.

He was at the table, telling whoever is watching that he is still obedient, not like his friends who were at that time out there, rebelling.

He probably did that to earn the trust of whoever’s watching.

image

What possibly could a car that’s on fire that’s also a reverse movement tell us? Obviously, it’s not the car they were in. It tells us the time.

Kai appears looking out of the window, like sehun did. (They all waiting for something)

And then Suho appears who’s still in the car, which means the present time; where they were caught. And then he appears outside the car, with something like a fence behind him. (what was he wearing? random clothes with piercing and a messy hair - doesn’t represent ‘order’ at all. He looks like he represent himself, and not like he belongs to an organization or something.

The video jumps from scene to another, and it doesn’t have a clear time line of how things happened, but as I said, they used some things to depict that.

image

This is not just baekhyun. (in my opinion) It might be only him though.

We see in the first seconds, it’s a car that’s moving backwards, and the background is pink. And with the last seconds, it’s baekhyun, due to his fingers, disguised as a guard and the background is light blue. (It’s so fast, but I don’t think those are one person!)

image

You can see the background, it’s pink.
It might not seem rational, but let’s continue.
The first person in the previous gif was in the same place they were now. Was it the driver of the truck? (We don’t see any driver though)

image

I guess this scene has another big indication, but I couldn’t figure it out.

I thought this may be one of the many scene to tell us the time process, if it’s present or a flashback. (I don’t know if this is important or not; but the time was close to 9 ‘Present, and when it was clockwise and B&W at the end of the video, it was close to 12! ‘past’)

So, as you can see, there was a fight here due to the plates being smashed, as they get back to their original shape, as if nothing happened. And we would know it’s the guards, not exo themselves who created this mess. (it might mean it’s something that’s not the members and it’s an outer factors that made this thing fall apart- the former members I mean

And then we’d see Chen between passers by, but they’re censored. They’re giving us their backs, and we can’t see anything from them, so why? And also, his face has some cuts.

Which tells us if it’s a flashback or present!

And in another scene, he does exactly the same thing, but the censoring disappears.
Why?

It may have a lot of meanings, I will not mention them now.

And then something very big we have to notice.

Why the color of dinner is all white even the food?
is it just like that, or it indicates something?
To me, I guess because all of them are guided. Guided to eat, guided to move around, guided to even breathe.
They’re not on their own. The food has no taste, and it is not something of big significant to them. They only eat it because they’re told to do so, not because they do want it. ‘so sad

As the camera took a scene of them getting around in the table, no one was looking at the camera. No one was looking up at all, which indicate that they’re still guided and controlled. Except Baehyun. He was looking to his left, and then he was looking at the camera; as if he knew they’re being watched.

Maybe the other members didn’t realize they being head-washed, but only baekhyun did.

Their clothes indicates something too. They all wear black. They all wear exactly the same, as if it was a uniform. And apparently no one dressed like he wants to; because they were guided. Someone of power was above them, watching, and he will notice the slightest mistake they do.

Then, we see lay in the same way we saw chen, people around him, censored. But they are not walking, they are down; dead maybe?

And then b&w scenes start to show; it might indicate the time change again.

The revolution or the rebellion has began!

image

and we see chen walking between a crowd, they are not censored this time. So why?
I have to ideas:

1. Chen is with some of the head-washed, and he is one of them, but he looked behind to tell us he knows something, or he is waiting for something, and he knows none of the surroundings will feel a thing.
He is not guided.

2. Chen escaped when he is not supposed to! He is between people who are up to do something

Dyo appears in b&w, is he a memory?
Like he escaped long before?
Was he hurt because of some mistreatment that he was only a freak? And he was inclining his head because he can’t do anything?

And then just after that, we see baekhyun, alone in that dining room, with a distinct color; yellow.

We then find Chanyeol in car, and the background outside is light-blue. He was only looking at the camera, not moving and not talking.

Xiumin came after him, with background color light-blue. And when lay appeared, he was talking to the people who fell, whether dead or whatever happened to them, but this lead us to question something. Is the lyrics actually talking about a girl they loved as the lyrics indicates? Or they made it to look so but they have another message? Then to whom?

Let’s not get too carried away by the visuals and forget the lyrics.

[But I want you, and my heart doesn’t lie]

It’s like I loved you, and I wanted you, and I am not lying about this and you can probably see it and know I don’t! Don’t mix whatever I did, and whatever I will do with who I really am.

When I say something, I mean it.
Don’t listen to others and believe whatever you want.

image

This scene where he sit over the many security cameras has a lot of meanings. It can mean; rebellion over authority, that you cannot control us, or that you don’t have any power over us.

This is how dyo participated in this act of rebellion. He is to help overlooking his friends, and also we should see that baekhyun is not the only one who was able to get away. Dyo too!

Now, we will go through the gif that was told to mimic ‘The Last Supper’ where jesus was betrayed by his followers. It might be so, but it also might have another meaning entirely. Baekhyun wasn’t here in the first place.

image

They’re eight!

All of them were looking at the camera now, which means, they are aware as well of the things happening, and also as if to tell us they are approving and they’re with Baekhyun who took the wheel and decided to sacrifice himself to help them all.

They were all part of it.

He left, and he was looking behind him when he did, as if to see if someone has noticed him. As if it was expected from all of them to always be there, in that dining table.

Noticed the colors?

Kai was standing in a hill of ‘probably’ dead guards and it was his part saying: You can call me monster

And let’s not ignore that chen’s scene where he walks with strangers came twice, it was nearly the same. And then a scene with the fire-works wasn’t a b&w, so why?

It might indicate that it is present!

We’d see lay fighting the guards who are fully armed. Lay and his friends have no weapons whatsoever. Why would they be so reckless with guards they do know how prepared they are unless they do know someone will get them out? Well, they may use their powers, but we didn’t see anything that tell us so.

We’ve seen chen, xiumin, kai, all hurt, but we didn’t see them actually fight like we saw lay.

Why? Despite all of that, we see them sitting surrounded by bodies, probably corpses. They killed them? No one saw them?

And let’s not forget how Kai stood behind the guards, and no one is looking at him or doing anything to him. Did he use his power to move in there among them and they didn’t notice?

And we can’t just ignore the distinct red-headed, that might be Chanyeol, fighting with the crowed. Conclusion; the only ones who actually fought; Chanyeol and Lay.

And now we’d see each member separately, standing still, and only looking mysteriously at something. And then we’d see baekhyun sneaking out of the place, after looking behind him.

We would see a scene; B&W; where chanyeol and lay only being caught by guards, and they seemed to not like it whatsoever. (Was this a flashback to soothing very far and that what made them fight fearlessly due to urge of revenge?)

All the other members got caught and they were getting hit by three to two guards due to what happened. (It might indicate their suffering)

image

Sehun was present at the dining table after it got ruined and look at his clothes. He is not wearing all black as before, and he doesn’t seem to care that their table is ruined. The way he sits and the he’s dressed indicates freedom. He’s enjoying it.

We’d see then Baekhyun getting out of a car, the field was empty, no one to stop him, and no one to fight him or preventing him from doing anything.

So that’s it!
