A little question for readers and for authors, just curious

For readers, what do you guys prefer? Long chapters to read, or shorter ones?

For authors, long chapters to write or shorter?

With short I mean 2000-4000 words,
long, well, maybe double that amount

I always aim for 3000-4000, I have been reading loviet's stories a lot, she always has amazingly packed and LONG chapters, I love that, but I would prefer maybe chapters around 4000 words

Just curious, cuz lately I don't even properly manage to write 3000+ chapters, I don't find more to put in the current chapter

As a reader, I actually like long chapters, meaning like 4,000+ words. However, it also depends on the story tbh, if it's simple writing, I don't like long chapters as it gets very boring after some time, but if the writing is advanced and all, I prefer chapters with more than just 1,000 words hahah.
As a writer, I also prefer to write longer chapters cuz honestly, I can't pack everything I wanna write into 2,000 words or something, and I feel like I didn't do a good job by leaving it at that. The perfectionist I am, my chapters naturally turn out a little longer and more detailed than I may have intended to make them at first.

As a reader, I don't like chapters that are long, exceeding the 3000+ word count. I tend to skip towards the end of it or end up being in a rush to get to the end.

As a writer, I like writing extremely short chapters, only 1000+ words. Haha. I'm not a girl with many words which probably explains my preference towards one shots.

I once read a fic that had about 400-600 words in one chapter, but the others chapters were long, so it wasn't a big deal. The fact that the storyline was good and that she wrote it perfectly, I mean, because of that, I didn't mind if the other chapters were short. My point is that if the storyline is good and it's well-written then I don't mind if the other chapters are short. I think it's about the quality of the work than the quantity of words. ^^

As a reader, I prefer longer chapters, like about 3000-4000 words (that's long for me.) I like detailed ones ^^ Sometimes, I don't even like to read super long stories since I don't have patience, lol, and when I bookmark it and I click on it, I forget where I stopped and such.

As a writer, I prefer long chapters, but detailed ones. I once wrote 6000 words and made a fic I saved but haven't posted on here that was 8000 words. :)

As a reader, I would prefer your definition of a shorter word count simply because it's easier to bookmark and know where I'm at if ever I need to stop.

As a writer, it all varies, depending on the story. Some chapters are meant to be written very short (as in shorter than your idea of short) and some are meant to written longer.

I cannot read chapters that exceed 3000+ because they're just too damn long. Especially when they're just filler chapters that kind of don't mean anything and absolutely nothing happens but the authors don't want the story to pace too quickl.

As a reader and writer, I prefer about 2,000-3,000. I think double that amount is a bit excessive.

As a reader: If the writing is engaging, I will happily read 30k words in one go. If it's a bit more on the dull side, even 2k words can be a struggle to get through.

As a writer, I typically post everything I write all at once so I don't have to make my readers wait. My longest "chapter" is 31.5k words.

OMG I LOVE LOVIET TOO
Her stories are the best! <3 I've been curious as to how many words she writes in every chapter haha

Hmm, as a reader, long chapters but being an author, short chapters. I usually write about 2000+ words

I think most of mine are 1500-2500 since I don't have much time and want to impatiently update ahaha I don't really read but when I do I think I prefer about the same amount

The length doesn't matter, as long as the story is moving at an appropriate pace and the updates connect so that readers can just pick up from where the last chapter ended :3

Much preferable are short chapter stories. Usually on the long chapter stories, they tend to give too much details or too non-vital conversations that will makes the story dragging. There are readers who checks on the chapter length before checking the content of the story. No one would bother, I think, to check a lengthy chapter especially if it is not narrated in a good way. But there are certain scenarios where a writer can't help but write a lengthy chapter and that will ideally be found somewhere in the middle or the of the story. I think, as long as you placed a cliffhanger worthy scenario on the chapter, you can move on to the next chapter already :)

definitely short, as both author and reader..i mean, if 2000-4000 words are considered short.

As a reader, i prefer reading short chapters if 2000 words count as short, if it's a chaptered-story (there are people who only barely have 500 words in a chapter tbh)
but for one shot, a bit more than that is better, so the story is well paced (about 5000-6000 words)

As a writer, my chaptered story has about 2,000 words (or a bit more) per chapter and i do think that's an ideal length (and i have seen a writings tips post stating so) because if it was shorter, there would be too much of a cliff hanger and the updates might be delayed so the readers wouldn't handle waiting and could stop reading. If it was longer, the reader would get tired of reading it.
But tbh it's all about the flow of your writing to keep the reader entertained that's really hard to master ;-;

As a reader and author I don't like short chapters but not too long and with a lot of descriptions. Some are too much and it gets me bored. I guess it's all about content and the author's style.
