40 Questions for fanfic writers (taken from fefedove)

Describe your comfort zone—a “typical you” fic.

Small, fluffy drabbles or crack-fics, either one-shots or chaptered without an end.

Is there a trope you’ve yet to try your hand at, but really want to?

I don’t know, but a vampire!au set in the modern day seems interesting.

Is there a trope you wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole?

I’m not a fan of genderbenders, to be honest. Changing the gender seems off to me.

How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now?  Care to share one of them?

There is so many, you have no idea. I have one temporarily called Destructive though. It’s a BTS-fic which I kind of like.

They all struggle with their own problems alone. They’re wicked, in some sense? My friend called them ed up. In different situations six of them get this invitation-flyer thing by the 7th, a silver-haired stranger (oooh wow really, who can it be) to meet people like themselves or something. They meet and become a rather tight-knit group of friends. They learn to heal themselves and are happy when they’re around each other, doing stuff together (no drugs luckily). Then they die together after a couple of months or smth the end.

Well was this confusing. I hope you understood some of it?

Share one of your strengths.

The fact that I’m bilingual? I can do Norwegian, English and German, and I understand both Danish and Swedish. It makes me more critical to how I write and how I’m going to phrase myself.

Share one of your weaknesses.

The fact that my English is mostly self-taught. It makes the general language in my stories worse, as I’m used to Norwegian. My typos are no joke either.

Also! I lack concentration and energy, so I’m really bad at updating my stories.

Share a snippet from one of your favorite pieces of prose you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

I wrote this without any further ideas or directions, but I kind of liked it. I ended up spinning a story around it – 900325, which I work on every now and then. I like the story line. It’s a little bit more than a snippet but yeah. I’m sorry.

I usually spend my day sitting on the windowsill. Outside, I can see the busy street and its visitors. People don’t notice, and all I see is anonymous faces hidden behind hoods or umbrellas, depending on the weather. Cars and humans rush by, on their way to something. Do they even notice the seasons are changing? To they realize the colours are draining from the streets, falling from the trees, washed away by the autumn rain? Do they notice the white snow that cover the grey pavements and the last remains of shades the soulless asphalt doesn’t create itself? I wonder what I would have done if I could go outside like that. Probably just sit down. I would observe the people around me, trying to solve them, fitting them into a puzzle. I would wonder why I was not a part of the life passing by me, and if I should participate.

But you understand some things, as you look out on all the people beneath you walking past, oblivious to your existence. You see the people and realize – they are all separate individuals. You look at their faces and wonder who they were, who they are or who they could have been, depending on their choices. You realize that they all have stories, just like you. Moments and memories that have changed them, made them into what they are. You realize that they are playing the lead role in their own movie, the movie that coincidentally is their life. And you see all these moments flickering by as they were, but aren’t anymore. And that your own, sad life story is just one of seven billion, and you feel so small.

But that’s where I guess other people come in. They are there when you need it, and at least once during your lifetime, you will meet the one person that will turn your world-view upside down.

And like a thousands times before, a repeating routine drilled into my bones, the windowsill is my safe place as I retreat to it. Knees drawn up to my chest and my hands thrown around them, I look out with my head leant against the window. The cold doesn’t bother me, and the constant numbness in my fingers is multiplied as I let my hand rest on the freezing surface. It’s chilly, and as I take it away my hand is cold, the window marked with the print of a palm, quickly condensing and fading into thin air. Another day. Day by day.

Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

I have so many favourite dialogues depending on which genre I’m writing, but this one is from 900325. I like the honesty in it – there is no sugarcoating anything. It’s plain honesty between the characters.

Luhan gives me a comforting smile that never reaches his eyes. And that’s when I know how bad he is, because this isn’t the normal Luhan. Luhan never says anything but the truth, he never tries to comfort anyone, not even himself. “Maybe I was looking for a change,” he says in a tired voice.

I shake my head, grabbing his wrist gently as I drag him further into the room. He stumbles a little bit, trying to keep his balance. I want to tell him that yes, this is the place for change, but I would be lying. And honesty is the only thing left he values.

“Then I am sorry to disappoint you. Things never change within these walls,”

“Isn’t time to turn that, then?” Luhan blinks slowly, a shade of the usual glint in his eyes, the one they were filled with when we first met.

I just sigh, studying his bruised body.

“Why do you follow so willingly?” I ask, inspecting the cuts on his cheeks and his dazed state. He is still swaying, and although he isn’t showing any form of sign that he is in pain, I know it really hurts.

Luhan just smiles at me tiredly. “Because I like to think I have a choice,” he replies dreamily before collapsing on my bed.

That was the first night we slept in the same bed, albeit on the opposite sides. But at one point I move towards the middle and so does Luhan, both in our unconsciousness. And when we wake up, he is hugging me hard and I am hugging him back. He has streaks of tears on his cheeks, almost dried up, and that is when I know Luhan is capable of all the feelings he denied he has. That is the first time Luhan truly seems human to me.

Which fic has been the hardest to write?

Destuctive, maybe. I’ve written 20 pages and still have a so many to go, and there is minimal dialogue up until now. I have to make sure it isn’t too heavy or obvious to read, as my descriptions tend to get out of hand.

Which fic has been the easiest to write?

Most of my crack-fics? They are often short, and I have an ending to them. I like writing them as well, so it comes easily and I don’t need many breaks. Some of the fics I have written that I like the best, is the crackfics (like It was a Hamster (get over with it), Hall Inspector Yoongi).

Is writing your passion or just a fun hobby?

It’s a hobby and my passion at the same time?

Is there an episode above all others that inspires you just a little bit more?

I don’t know, rather than an episode it’s a part of my life, if that’s what you mean. I had three best friends, and I was repeatedly told they were bad for me. I kept pushing boundaries I had no wish of pushing. When we parted and I ended up at B.U.P (some psychologist-thing or smth) I understood what people had been trying to tell me, and I’ve based Destructive on parts of that.

What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever come across?

Let your story alone for half a year, then read over it again and make changes. You will be able to see things you didn’t before.

What’s the worst writing advice you’ve ever come across?

I don’t know of any advices, but we were taught techniques in school that we were supposed to use when we read and wrote. I hate them up until this very day.

If you could choose one of your fics to be filmed, which would you choose?

Well, I’d like to see how Destructive would be done, but it would probably be rated . Maybe 900325, or Atop the Hill? Balloons would make a nice short-movie. Please don’t ask me such questions I am extremely bad at choosing.

If you could only write one pairing for the rest of your life, which pairing would it be?

Xiuhan! Although I find myself liking Yoonmin these days…

Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?

I always start at the beginning, but if I get ideas I might write them down and put them in later.

Do you use any tools, like worksheets or outlines?

Nope. I did use a timeline once?

Stephen King once said that his muse is a man who lives in the basement.  Do you have a muse?

My friends, without knowing? Namjoon and Yoongi inspires me a lot as persons and artists, though. Everyone in BTS.

Describe your perfect writing conditions.

I write a lot in a certain notebook I bought in Poland during class, that one works really well for me. Other than that I always write in the night. I can’t sleep before 4a.m. anyways so I end up writing. My best ideas come from when I write in the night, sitting in my bed or under my desk (long story).

How many times do you usually revise your fic/chapter before posting?

It depends, really. Sometimes I revise it a hundred times. Other times, I am tired and grumpy and just post it. If it’s small drabbles or one-shots then sometimes I just read over once to make sure there aren’t any typos before I post them.

Choose a passage from one of your earlier fics and edit it into your current writing style

I’m supposed to be packing for France as I leave tomorrow morning but I’ll get back to it later!

If you were to revise one of your older fics from start to finish, which would it be and why?

COFFEE SHOP OH MY GOD. The storyline was so bad and unrealistic and I just… Cringe attack.

Have you ever deleted one of your published fics?

I don’t think so? I do have a couple I am debating about deleting though, as I haven’t updated since last year and I never get anywhere with it.

What do you look for in a beta?

Someone who can help me with the speed-grammar mistakes I make, as well as the typos I often fail to see.

Do you beta yourself?  If so, what kind of beta are you?

I don’t think I am good enough to be one.

How do you feel about collaborations?

It would be interesting, but I don’t think I am fit to be doing one. I am too distracted and I write very irregularly so I would be giving the other person a lot of trouble.

Share three (ignoring the three) of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.

I remember reading “And the Rose said to Me” by Fliuor when I first joined AFF. That one left a big impact, they are really talented. There are other writers as well, but I can’t remember them right now.

If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose?

As of now, after reading the latest updates of fics I am subscribed to, I really find myself wanting a prequel to Danse Macabre by Fefedove, because it's simply that great. It’s a story that seems very intricate, and all the characters have very interesting backgrounds. I’d love to read them. I wouldn’t want to write them though, as that probably would destroy the amazing story.

Do you accept prompts?

If I can spin a story I want to write around it, then yes.

Do you take liberties with canon or are you very strict about your fic being canon compliant?

I don’t really have an opinion on that matter? It needs to be true to reality though, I don’t like it when it becomes unrealistic.

How do you feel about ?

If it’s that’s important to the story then I’m okay with it, but I don’t like for the sake of .

How do you feel about crack?

I write crack so I like it. It needs to be fun though, crack-fics that aren’t fun I’m skeptical to. It needs to flow naturally, the incidents needs to be logical.

What are your thoughts on non-con and dub-con.

No. Nope. Never. Absolutely no. How can someone think it’s okay. NOOOOOO.

Would you ever kill off a canon character?

Absolutely. Half my stories ends with one or more of the main characters dying.

Which is your favorite site to post fics?

AFF, I think. I’ve recently joined ao3 but I still prefer AFF.

Talk about your current WIPs.

I’m writing a crack one-shot called Pink-Haired Mistakes right now, but half of it got deleted and all my ideas went missing. I’m trying to get the will to write it back, because I like the idea. Other than that I’m writing Monster Plaza, a one shot-that-can-be-turned-chaptered inspired by a post on Tumblr and BTS’ new teaser-photos for Sick. Then it’s Destructive, a small college-drabble based on another drabble and Atop the Hill. I have too many WIPs tbh.

Talk about a review that made your day.

I have only requested once and it was so short I don't remember it ._.

Do you ever get rude reviews and how do you deal with them?

Only one review, and it wasn’t rude in any sense so…?

Write an alternative ending to [a fic of yours] (or just the summary of one).

900325 where Minseok lives to see his birthday and fulfill his goal of turning 18 instead of dying the day before.

Other than that I’m quite happy with my endings (although some reader might not be oops).
