this... this "colorism"
do not read at your own risk.
like i'm going to state my own opinion to y'all, and i honestly find it a bit controversial esp. today in society
something on this website really triggered me to write about what i feel
this also has more than 1000 words o.o
and some fans might get really mad at me so to prevent yourself from burning in flames, i suggest you can maybe not budge to read.
curious? scroll down
if not, you can go back to what you were previously doing :)
so i went on confess-exo to see the i-fans' perspective on things
(well that's kind of what i always do on a daily basis. curiosity kills the cat [???] and yes, i'm a k-fan )
i kind of wanted to see things about well-
lay going "I HAVE A WORKSHOP HA"
or tao hiding behind his dad or something idkplease note that i know clearly about what's going on and that this is how i summarize things when i'm not such in a good mood
anyway.
honestly, i'm so sick of things like this now-
and anything else that goes the other way around.
like-
"RACIST RACIST RACIST"
"chanyeol's such a colorist omfggggg"
or
"OMG #WEWANTCHANYEOLDEAD SO TRUE AHAHAHAHHA" (yes, there was an abominable hashtag like this-)
like
no.
and pfff, you might think i'm being biased because i'm an exo-l, but *sigh*, let me just say things in the most unbiased way possible.
i honestly, honestly am on both sides of the whole situation.
...
what does that mean, exactly?
like i'm not even in "OPPA DIDNT MEAN IT" mode or "HE SHOULD GO DIE IN A FIRE" mode actually.
get ready for an opinion that i never see in forums or anything like that.
but before that-
i've been taught by mr. google what "colorist" means (look it up on google itself if you don't believe me!) -
yeah
and i will never regret what i learned that very day i looked it up.
chanyeol is not associated with comics or art. kriscasso
classic exo ot12 jokes ftw
now what i was trying to say beforehand-
people at school also say stuff like that as well, but i don't really seem to mind it.
they call generic americans snowmen and stuff like that who am i kidding
and they call korean-americans "twinkies" because they're "yellow" (asian) on the outside but act "white" (generic european/american) on the inside.
(in case you don't know, twinkies look like this)
and yeah, call me a hypocrite for pointing out chanyeol's jokes like that earlier, but there's a different reason that i did.
and it's definitely not just because it's racist.
but no one actually gets hurt by these.
absolutely no one.
they all laugh and hit each other playfully in the cafeteria and smiles and rainbows are everywhere.
it's just that i don't find them funny, and i don't dare to make a laugh out of it.
anyway
when chanyeol tells kai things like
"bleach your skin!"
"darrrrrrrk"
does kai look amused?
not really.
did he ever look amused?
not exactly.
so-
i don't actually find it like the exact same scenario in which you playfully insult your best friends because he actually looks very hurt when those jokes pop up.
and would even when kai says to stop like more than once, you can't really say chanyeol didn't know-
sorry "OPPA DIDN'T MEAN IT" fans.
but ALSO
google also told me this-
-
the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.
-
prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior."a program to combat racism"
synonyms: racial discrimination, racialism, racial prejudice, xenophobia, chauvinism, bigotry, casteism "Aborigines are the main victims of racism in Australia"
-
yeah and don't bring up the argument that
"oh google/internet isn't always right"
because like at least 90% of the time, it actually is.
and that would make you hypocritical as well, thank you-
it's sad that racism became such a generic term that if you say the color "black" in front of an obnoxious second grader, he would be like
"RACCCCIIIIIIISSST"
like too sad.
but now, for all of you fans who want those who make "colorist" jokes die in a shark attack, i'm now going to bring up culture.
remember when i said i didn't really mind the jokes? because living as a korean, i see many of these "too dark" jokes everywhere.
but not everyone gets sad and all like that
yeah, the world is sinful, i am sinful, and you are too. sinful people like us find lots of malicious things funny. so don't fight me and say
"OH THE WORLD IS SUCH A SAD PLACE"
congrats you live in it.
on the contrary, some people actually laugh and squeal in delight, even the targeted person who got the joke on herself.
i like still don't understand it a bit, but this is what general koreans are like.
like i'm not scared if you try to fight me when you need to point out this, because my own FAMILY makes jokes like this on all our relatives while they have like a laughing contest
my own FRIENDS do this
and random people on school buses do this, so... yeah.
but i don't laugh at all.
and even if these jokes were racist, chanyeol isn't technically pointing out a race
did he ever say african? no. did he ever say hispanic? no.
he just said "dark skin tone" and that's all.
i see why you may find it racist, because when people first think dark skin they think of either african-(americans), hispanics, or some asians
but it actually wasn't direct.
like did you know in the hunger games series, katniss everdeen actually had olive skin according to ms. suzanne collins?
not a fair, pale complexion?
not that i dislike jennifer lawrence, i mean she's great. absolutely great.
no sarcasm. like seriously, i love the hunger games.
ANYHOW
yeah, so it technically isn't considered "racist" since he isn't pointing out a certain race.
putting down a different skin color =/= racist :)
sorry, "HE SHOULD GO DIE IN A FIRE" fans.
but of course, jokes like these in particular aren't exactly right.
push the racism aside! push the colorism aside, especially, because none of them work for comics!
well yeah suho and his manga
but you know what bothers me the most? he seems to be pushing him down.
i can't really call it bullying, but if you're more like that strict, in-demand, true-blue person, be my guest to call it bullying.
even if these jokes weren't "racist" according to some of you all, i think it really does matter on the reason if kai finds it funny or not.
like if it was
chanyeol- HAHA KAI YOU LOOK LIKE A FISH (he never said this, don't worry)
kai- ...
that would still be offensive, right? that wasn't racist. that was just a comparison to a fish. but was the given reaction a laugh? not really.
if chanyeol said this, and kai reacted the same way he reacts to the "colorist" jokes, this would still be like wildfire, wouldn't it?
i also think that another reason why this causes more controversy is because kai doesn't even seem to like jokes like this.
if he laughed and stuff, i think it could have been less of a deal, since "OPPA DOESNT MEAN IT" fans could be like
"oh but kai oppa looks okay so chanyeol oppa is an innocent sweet little fluffy angel who-"
or something like it.
but the way how kai looks so insecure when he gets laughed at breaks my heart.
so tl;dr?
kai doesn't seem to like the jokes so chanyeol should stop, racist or not.
this was honestly kind of hard, since i really adore chanyeol a lot <3
and not only him, but other members in exo who say things like this
and this actually relates to all groups out there
like vixx and other groups
(and starlights, don't jump on me. i really adore vixx. especially hakyeon.)
thank you for reading.
