A Celebration of 15 Yunjae Moments
NOTE: I AM AWARE PHOTOBUCKET HAS SCREWED THIS IMAGE HEAVY POST OVER. I'll go through and replace the gifs and images soon! xoxoxo (Aurorajuri-A)
1. Everything about MKMF08
I think everyone's favorite part of this (other than the hug), was that this wasn't fanservice in the slightest. I'm pretty sure that if they had thought every single little thing they did would be filmed, they wouldn't have spent almost the entire event whispering together intimately. And yes, I do believe "intimately" is the exact correct term. Anything that didn't involve chatting directly over poor Changmin was pretty much lips pressed directly up against the ear, cheek-to-cheek action. And then when they're no longer sitting beside each other and Jaejoong brushes his fingers against Yunho's cheek as he leans down to whisper to him... touching someone without any need other than further closeness like that is one of the hallmarks of having or desiring an intimate relationship with someone. It's especially sweet when after that, Yunho pulls Jaejoong up to sit next to him-- a further expression of needing to be closer. In a way, having that closeness seemed to be the theme of the night. Even when Yunho slips off for some reason or another, Jaejoong notices his absence right away, follows him, and returns with him to their seats.
Another favorite moment is when Yunho notices Jaejoong is cold and extends his hand to him. Jaejoong takes it, adjusts their fingers so they are clasping more comfortably, and after he lets go, brings the hand that had been holding Yunho's to his lips, grinning all the while. I don't know what I love more-- Yunho's very endearing way of helping Jae with his coldness (another very intimate action), or Jae's smile as soon as he realizes what Yunho's doing. Is there any other way to describe that smile other than beaming? You can't look at that smile and think he's laughing because he thinks the situation is silly, but because Yunho's gesture made him genuinely happy.
And then, the hug. There's a reason why it's called the hug of the century. Yunjae hugs all the time. All the members hug. In fact, there are hundreds of absolutely adorable hugs in K-Pop history between a whole array of different people. So what was it about this one? Without the nice slow-mo effect, it was a rather quick hug when it comes down to it. But even if you aren't a fan of DBSK, watching that hug still gives people a feeling. Maybe it's the way Jaejoong leans into it, at first thinking he's only getting a high five, but then realizing there's something more coming. Maybe it's the way they both close their eyes, as if for that moment they're completely lost somewhere else. Maybe it's just the fact that they look so damn good together. Whatever the case is, that hug was magic, and out of Yunjae's many hugs, was considered the most beautiful by fans. For me, the thing I like the most about it was that at that point there were definitely cameras that would be watching them, but they seemed to forget all about them again for that single moment. It was only about each other.
2. Dangerous Love: The Scripted and Unscripted
Yunjae was beginning to popularize during the Rising Sun era, namely because fetus Jaejoong and Yunho had a penchant for cuddling adorably, and Jaejoong was already beginning his habit of not-so-subtle Yunho-gushing. SM was no stranger to the shipping world-- fanfic was around even back in the H.O.T era, and plenty of it involved gay shipping-- but they always had a good amount of control over it. It was a fantasy world that toyed with the fans' imaginations, but since it was a fantasy, it was easy to take a step back from it and point out where it was something members were doing only for fans, not a real "dangerous love" that would be troublesome to their conservative society. Including a Yunho/Jaejoong love storyline in the drama the members participated in was meant to dampen growing Yunjae enthusiasm and put it clearly into the terms of a fantasy. It may have seemed pointless since it only fueled the fire even more, but I'm sure they really were trying to paint it in their own light. You see their interactions from Jaejoong's perspective in the story, and the more convinced he becomes that Yunho's in love with him, the more convinced you become. You see each action and touch on Yunho's part as an expression of love and start rooting for Jaejoong to fall for him, too.
But then the ending abruptly reveals it to be a fantasy-- Yunho's only acting that way because he wants to butter Jae up after breaking his camera. It was SM's way of constructing a fantasy and breaking it down, and it leaves a somewhat disappointing feeling when you finish watching, as if you've just been tricked. The same thing happens in Super Junior's "Dangerous Friendship"-- Kyuhyun seems to have fallen in love with Sungmin, but is only using him for revenge, Leeteuk is only flirting with Kangin to win a bet with Siwon, Eunhyuk, and Donghae. All of it plays on the fantasies of fans and abruptly denies them at the conclusion.
Of course, when you have the objects of fantasies acting them out, it's bound not to work in discouraging fans, and it didn't. But more so than that, Yunjae themselves were the ones who made SM's plan to tame down the obsession with Yunjae fail. First you have Jaejoong acting a little too happy and nervous in the Making Of footage than warranted for a fantasy script that doesn't go far beyond a few hugs and touches-- not out of the ordinary for either of them, considering how often they'd touched each other before. Jaejoong can barely meet Yunho's eyes without having an NG issue involving laughing, smiling, or blushing, including the adorable instance of seeing himself in Yunho's eyes when they were staring at each other. He certainly doesn't seem to mind being grasped around the waist for his princess carry either. Both of them admitted to feeling awkward with each other following the drama-- something that usually doesn't happen when what you're doing can be explained away as playacting-- to the point where Jaejoong used that as an explanation for why he'd just sung Hug's bed-in-your-room line (in Chinese) to Yunho in the middle of their X-Man filming. SM didn't really do their job of crushing the fantasy-- in fact, Yunho and Jaejoong seemed more aware of each other than ever afterwards.
3. Which member would you date?
It's a question most boy groups get asked, but the way the answers play out in the video has led many down the path of Yunjae. I think Yoochun and Changmin should win all the awards here for making things obvious. Looking at Jaejoong when Yunho didn't pick him? Jaejoong instantly losing his interest in the conversation when Yunho says any member is fine? Looking at Yunho even before Jaejoong says his name? Changmin making the point of saying IF YOU WERE A GIRL to Jaejoong? And then Yunho... he looks kind of panicked about being picked, which draws the question of whether he would have reacted the same if Yoochun or Changmin had picked him, or whether he would have laughed.
Interestingly, from this point on whenever this question was asked, Yunho would usually say Jaejoong and Jaejoong would usually say Yunho, to the point where Junsu even got angry at Yunho for always picking Jaejoong, reminding him that were other members. And something tells me that Junsu had other reasons for issuing that warning rather than wanting to be picked by Yunho himself.
4. Their "uniform photoshoot"
I'm sorry, but this was not a "uniform photoshoot". This was Yunjae and Yoosu shooting a CF for their new BL drama, with Changmin glancing at on his laptop and being ignored by the cameraman. Bonus points for Yunho grabbing Jae and Jae leaning in and grabbing his shoulder like he's about to get kissed until Yunho's pushes him a little to get him to do the dip pose.
He's a smug little bastard here, isn't he?
5. Getting lost in each other's eyes
Hey, I'd get a little bit distracted too if Yunho did that tongue movement thing while I was looking at him, too. But Jae was in the middle of an interview, which probably wasn't the ideal time to completely lose track of his train of thought and make that I'm-so-ashamed-in-myself look before remembering what he was saying.
In the middle of a photoshoot is also a very inopportune time to get caught staring. More points to Yunho for that cute little smirk when Jae finally snaps back to attention after their little staring contest.
6. Singing their duet together in Love in the Ice
Good for instant emoshinki. Changmin also used to sometimes take a step back when they were singing together, so they could get a better look at each other when they were delivering their lines.
7. Changmin in the middle
I spent an entire semester of high school sitting in between the class couple in my math class, and they spent the entire semester talking over me as if I didn't exist. I feel for Changmin, I really do. You can tell there a gazillion other places he'd rather be at times when squeezed betweent the DBSK class couple, which makes you think he was stuck there deliberately, just like I got stuck between our own class couple in attempt to split them up and keep their attention on math. It didn't work for me, and it didn't seem to work for Changmin either.
9. Junsu making everything obvious
Which I talk about here
10. Yoochun making everything obvious
Which I talk about in the same post
11. The Jaesu Gap
To the point where Jaejoong is practical sitting on top of Yunho (sometimes in the middle of interviews), even when there's tons of room next to Junsu. It seems like it would have been better to stick Changmin in between them in their sitting formation rather than their standing formation.
12. Their many hugs
Even if it's a sweaty concert back hug
Their hugs are so sensual, that it's like all of us intruding just by watching. It's like he's covering his lips to prevent himself from doing something
They make Jaejoong completely light up
And sometimes smile shyly
They find a way no matter who's standing in the way
Even if they exclude other members
Even if there's really no reason for them but to be close
They simply look natural
As if they are falling into each other
As if they are holding each other up
13. Their jealousy
Whether it's Donghae giving Yunho a lift or some older guy making the grab for Jae's hand or even Yunho spending too much time with 85 club, it's hard to handle the one you love doing with someone with someone else what you want them to be doing with you
14. Their gratitiuous touching and hand holding
The inside of the thigh seems like a place you wouldn't want to be touching your best friend. I do everything with my BFF, and I would never go there
Holding someone's hand carefully as if it's the most precious thing in the world tends to extend beyond friend territory
So does groping their moobs
And reaching across their moobs just for the honor of gently their fingers
Grabbing their seems off limit for concerts, as well
And tickling them in the middle of TV filming right after kicking other members in the chest to take them out
someone's arm here seemed a little bit unnecessary....
Bumping your crotch into the hand of your "friend"? OVER THE LINE
But then again, it's hard to stop hanging onto that person no matter where you are
Even when you don't necessarily need to
Even when you're frankly getting WAY too close to their personal space
Because holding onto them just feels safe
It feels right
It makes even simple gestures all the more important
It's comforting
It makes you feel loved
It feels better than anything else
So even when you don't need to hold onto them at every moment
It still becomes a need you can't resist
15. The love never dies
Even when they're far apart, they're still a connection that never goes away. The Yunjae rings were a symbol of their bond when they were together, and still remain a symbol, perhaps an even bigger one now that they're apart. When Yunjae waved to the Yoonjaelovebar, it wasn't for no reason that he chose to communicate to them by bringing his ring to his lips.
Or when he mentioned Jaejoong for the first time in the longest time, he chose to smile fondly down at his ring when it was all over
As long as the two of them are still keeping the faith, all of us won't stop either
