They weren't really friends.
The first time Hayi 'met' Hanbin, he was standing by the window too. He saw her, pointed straight at her...and stuck out his tongue as far as it could go. Hayi cried. They were six years old. Since then, to her, Hanbin was the obnoxious kid from the other unit. Hayi, even as they grew up, loved to look out the window; only to stop short when she feels somebody watching her. And Hanbin would wave to her from across the street, with a big smile on his face, probably making up for the mehrong he gave her from their childhood. It drove Hayi nuts. And to Hanbin, she was the tiny thing he loved to cross. Jiwon egged Hanbin on whenever she was in the park, or in the convenience store, or the bread store...when she wasn't behind the windows of their unit. He always thought that Hayi was cute and pretty, and he'll always tell Hanbin that he's a doofus.Chaerin arrived half an hour later, and the sisters sat down together in front of the television to have a rare moment to have dinner together.
The rain fell harder as the night wore on, and Chaerin complained of the difficult commute, the sticky feeling of summer rain, and her hunger. Hayi smiled as she listened to her sister, and appropriately nodded at the right moments. But halfway through the meal, Chaerin noticed the drawn living room curtains. "What happened to the view? Did it go bad while you waited for me?" she teased Hayi. "No, unni. I just...thought it looked cold because of the rain," she said slowly. "The lights should look nice tonight with the droplets of rain on the window; do you mind if I open the curtains?" And she marched to the window, not waiting for Hayi's answer. She pulled the huge curtains apart and opened them wide enough to get a big picturesque view. She admired it for a moment, but Chaerin suddenly paused. "Hayi, what date is it again today?" "July 10th. Why?" "Ah, now I understand," Chaerin paused. Hayi turned to look at her big sister staring transfixedly at the apartment across theirs. "It's Jiwon's death anniversary." "Oh..." Hayi replied uncertainly. Chaerin sighed. "It's such a shame. I should probably ask Jinhwan how they are." Hayi fidgeted in her seat. Unlike her, Chaerin had been good friends with the two eldest Kim boys. The eldest brother, Jinhwan, was her classmate in high school, and the second eldest, Jiwon, she had met during college in Hongdae where they hung out. "Jiwon was a sweet kid," Chaerin mused. "I still can't believe he's gone." Silence ensued as Chaerin returned to her seat and the girls finished their meal. The older sister kept glancing out the window, sighing. "The youngest boy," Hayi started hesitantly. "I hadn't seen him for a while." "He moved out after Jiwon died," Chaerin answered. "He took up engineering in a university in Incheon, and stayed in a dorm. Poor kid. Jiwon being gone hit him hardest.I don't know what he does now." Hayi didn't want to ask any more questions, though her curiosity was burning. How much did one have to feel to have the lights go out of your eyes? Chaerin suddenly chuckled as she put her phone down. "Jinhwan's bringing us cake." "Eh?" "They al
