Fulfilled Dreams

Fulfilled Dreams - Woobin

Being stuck in traffic was never pleasant experience for anyone, a train of lights, cars bumper to bumper and inching along just to try and get home after a long day of work. Looking through the windows of your car, you observed others as some yelled and honked their horns just creating a ripple of anger amongst the stalled cars while others leaned back and read a book, letting it just happen. Music flowed through the speakers of your car, your hands resting securely against the steering wheel while your lips moved with the lyrics letting your voice mold with one of your favorite songs. Tapping your thumbs against the steering wheel, you kept the beat and rhythm to the song while you enjoyed the private concert in the comfort of your car.

Inching along slowly, you checked your surroundings again before you stopped and checked your phone for any notifications from your fiancé, Woobin. Glancing over at the clock on your dashboard, you sighed thinking that his scenes he was filming today ran a little over the scheduled time. Rolling the worry off of your shoulders, you took a deep breath and reassured yourself that he would contact you when he was done with filming.

Slipping your phone back into your purse, you returned your eyes to the road, with the cars not even moving, you knocked your head back against your head rest while you waited to move just an inch or two more. Skipping through a few songs on your album, you found a song that you enjoyed, swaying your head from side to side; you hummed along to the melody as the song.

Horns instantly caught your attention as cars tried to move out of the way, checking your mirrors you tried to figure out what was going on. Instantly, you froze seeing a semi barreling down the open part of the freeway just a few thousand feet behind you. Watching him in horror, the semi laid on his horn while the large vehicle plowed through a few twenty cars without stopping. Other drivers tried to pull out of the way with little success trying to save others from the fate that was quickly coming to them.

Abandoning cars, you watched people run to the side of the freeway as the semi continued to plow through traffic. Metal crushed with one another, screams were heard as you knew you had to get out. Quickly grabbing your purse, you turned off your car and tried to open the door, pulling the handle, you pushed on the door yet it wouldn’t budge.

Panic began to rush through your veins as you unlocked the door, trying with everything you had to open the door so you could be safe. With the semi coming closer and closer to you, you had just a few seconds of opportunity left before you knew you would be hit. Pushing the door and pounding on the window, others tried to help you but the door wouldn’t open. Everyone scattered from your car as you lay down and curled up in a ball, with one final attempt, you kicked your door, not even budging. Tears filled your eyes as you closed your eyes awaiting fate.

“Good job today guys” The director called through the megaphone he held up to his mouth, “That is all for today”

“Did you want to come and celebrate with us?” Woobin’s coworker asked while Woobin packed up his bag for the day.

“Thank you but I am going to have to decline, ______ is waiting for me and we were going to work on more planning for the wedding tonight” Woobin bows gently “Maybe next time”

“Alright, alright, I guess I can’t argue with your wife-to-be” Woobin’s coworker smiled and patted his shoulder, “Good work today”

“Same to you” Woobin called after him, lifting his backpack onto his shoulder, he pulled out his phone seeing if he had any messages from you. Moving his thumb across the screen, he didn’t find any new messages.

Slipping his phone back into his pocket, he stopped in his tracks before glancing over to the large group of people that were hovering around a screen. Tilting his head in curiosity, he headed over to see what all the fuss was about. Towering over some of the people in the back, his eyes caught the screen of the iPad that everyone was watching.

“Earlier today, an out-of-control Semi truck barreled down the freeway, without any way to stop, the driver laid on his horn and tried to alert everyone to move. Plowing through the cars stopped in traffic, the driver ended up totaling 38 cars, injuring 29 people with a single death in the mayhem. Below are the names of the injured, if you know someone please go to the Seoul Hospital as soon as you can.” The reporter announced as all eyes turned to the bottom of the screen.

Woobin’s heart dropped to the pit of his stomach as he recognized the freeway as one that you always took to get home. Gripping the shoulder strap to his bag, his eyes read the injured names along the bottom of the screen. Towards the end of the list, he saw your name travel across the screen.

“N-No” Woobin breathed while his feet shuffled backwards, with his mind racing a mile a minute, he pulled out his phone.

Quivering fingers slowly found your contact information and dialed your number, lifting the phone to his ear; he heard the dial tone sound while he anxiously awaited you to pick up.

“Please pick up, please pick up” He chanted to himself as he paced back and forth, hearing the call end, he pulled the phone away from his ear before he dialed your number again, hoping the cell connection was just lost.

Repeating the same pattern three or four times, he slipped his phone into his pocket as his only thought was to go to the Seoul hospital in hopes that you were alright. Bidding everyone a quick goodbye, he ran to his car and slid into the drivers’ seat, pulling the seatbelt over himself; he clicked it into place while he started the engine.

Running his tongue over his lips, he couldn’t help but worry for you, what state you would be in or if there was someone else with your name, pulling his phone up to his ear, he dialed the home number just to be sure that you just didn’t have your phone turned off. In a matter of seconds the answering machine chimed in his ear as he ended the call quickly.

Half of an hour later, he pulled into the Seoul Hospital’s parking lot, leaving his backpack in the car, he ran up to the entrance after locking his car. The automatic doors opened as he looked around, quickly surveying the area before he trotted up to the nurses’ station.

“Can I help you sir?” A cute nurse cooed as Woobin’s hands pressed against the countertop.

“Is ____ _____ here by chance?” He questioned through his rapid breathing.

“Let me look” The nurse turned her eyes to her computer, her fingers danced along the keys of the keyboard. Moving her hand to the mouse, she scrolled a little before her eyes found what she was looking for. “She is here, sir. May I ask what relation you have to her?”

“I am her Fiancé, Kim Woobin” He replies shakily, his fingers shaking against the counter.

“I will need you to fill this out for me and we will locate her for you” The nurse says sliding a clipboard across the counter.

“Thank you” Woobin bows and begins filling out the paperwork carefully, wanting to help you as much as he can.

Sliding the paperwork back over the counter, he took a seat in one of the many open chairs, rocking back and forth, he leaned over his knees as he couldn’t help but worry how you were holding up, what damage was done and if it was anything serious. Feeling numb to the outside world, he kept his eyes glued to the tile floor as he nervously yet patiently waited for word on you.

“Mister Kim?” A soft voice cooed as his head lifted after calling him a few times.

“Y-Yes?” He stammered, lifting his head and standing up just in case she has him follow her.

“Your fiancé is in surgery right now, she should be out in about two hours.” The nurse relayed to him.

“H-H-How bad is s-she?” He gently grabbed the nurses’ arm trying to keep her from moving until he received an answer.

“Honestly, I can’t tell you anything more than that, you will just have to wait” The nurse bowed to him, “Can I offer you a water or coffee?”

“No, I am fine, thank you” Woobin gently released her arm as he settled back into his seat.

The arms on the clock slowly moved around the face, watching as two hours ticked by, he rose to his feet and shuffled over to the nurses’ station once more.

“Is she out yet?” He questioned as the nurses refreshed their pages and gently shook their heads.

“We will let you know when she is in her room” The nurse looked up at him as he slowly nodded and took a little walk around the hospital.

In an attempt to keep you off of his mind, he wondered around for a little bit but made sure to head back to the front to check if you were back yet. Another hour ticked by and another before the nurses came and got him.

“She is in her room now” The nurse informed him

“Thank you, where is her room?” He questioned standing up on his feet.

“Room 378 Sir, it is in the Intensive Care Unit” The nurse clarified, he nodded and made his way to the elevator to get on the correct floor.

Getting lost only a time or two, he found himself in front of your room door; the three numbers stared back at him as he closed his eyes and dropped his head slightly. Preparing himself for what he could see, he took a deep breath and twisted the handle and sliding the door open. A dark room welcomed him as some light spilled in from the slightly opened blinds, sliding the door quietly behind him; the noise of the machines filled the room as his eyes adjusted to the low light.

Padding around your bed, he was careful not to make too much noise as he pulled up a chair next to your bed. Easing his self into the chair, his eyes slowly scanned your body, starting from your head; his eyes followed your bruises and cuts that littered your face down to a large bandage on your neck. The large hospital gown hung loosely over your figure, almost falling off of your shoulders, his eyes trailed over your chest where monitor chords spilled out from the collar of the gown; tears began to swell in his eyes making his vision blurry. Blinking away the tears, he continued to follow his eyes down your arms to find the IV and a blood transfusion needles poking into your skin.

“Hi my beautiful girl” He whispered, his voice cracking instantly, carefully, he dragged the backs of his fingers across yours as he felt the warmth from your skin knowing you were alive. Slowly, he slipped his hand into yours, holding your hand in his he lifted his eyes to your face, noticing a breathing tube between your lips, a few unwilling tears slipped from his eyes and rolled down his cheeks.

“I’ll stay with you love, I know you would want that” He added before lifting his free hand up and pushing some hair away from your beautiful features.

Watching over you for a few hours, he closed his eyes and rested beside you, his ears listening to the heart monitor and breathing monitor as he brushed his thumb over your hand slowly. A click came from the door as he opened his eyes and turned his head to see the doctor coming through the door with a nurse on his hip.

“Mister Kim, may I speak to you for a second?” The doctor inquired as he stood up and carefully lifting your hand off of his before he followed the doctor out into the hall, leaving you to the nurses’ care.

“How is she doing Doctor?” Woobin questioned once the door was closed behind them, both of them stood right outside your door as the doctor looked into his eyes.

“I am going to be completely honest with you, son” The elderly doctor started, Woobin focused in on the doctor’s eyes, his leathery skin wrinkled on either side of his eyes, Woobin searched for answers but he only saw sadness behind the doctor’s eyes hanging onto his every word while his heart thumped loudly in his chest.

“She is in critical condition, we did everything we could for her but the damage done could be too much for her. We will be surprised if she makes it through the night” The doctor told him as Woobin’s heart stopped for a second.

“Isn’t there anything more you can do?” Woobin pleaded, his brown eyes swelling up with tears, “We have a wedding in a few months, we were going to start a family and live happily together, we were going to grow old together and watch our kids have kids of their own.” Tears rolled down his cheeks like bullets, falling one right after another.

“I am sorry, we have done everything we can for her” The doctor raised his hand and placed it on Woobin’s shoulder.

“I-Is there anything I can do for her?” Woobin choked out with the steadiest voice he could muster. “If she needs any organ please take it from me, I will do anything to save her. Please… I can’t let her die…” Woobin’s head dropped as he tried to stabilize his breathing.

“We will see if she makes it through the night, then go from there” The doctor replied before a passing nurse whispered in his ear then nodded to her. “Go back in son; I will see you in the morning.”

Slowly moving back into your room, he took his seat next to you as he lifted your hand and placed it back into his. Staring at your chest, he watched you take slow breaths as the nurse turned off the breathing machine.

“I took out her breathing tube, she is doing well breathing on her own, but if she has difficulties through the night press the nurses’ button” The nurse instructed as she started to wheel out the breathing machine. Woobin lifted his eyes from your moving chest to your mouth as an oxygen mask rested against over your nose and mouth.

“Please get better, please fight for yourself, for everyone who loves you, for you family, for me” He whispered into the stagnant air around you, “Don’t give up, you aren’t a quitter” He added before his voice began to break once more.

Leaning back in his chair, he turned his head to see your purse sitting on top of the table beside your bed. Outreaching his free hand, he brought the purse over onto his lap while he slowly dug through your purse. Finding your broken phone and your engagement ring, digging around a little more, he found a small notebook inside as well. Pulling out the notebook, he placed it on your purse before he opened the front cover.

Our Wedding Plans, were written in your handwriting on the first page, a smile curled onto his sad lips, flipping through the pages, he saw all of your plans from the flower arrangement that you were going to carry down the aisle to the venue and the vacation the two of you were going to take on the honeymoon.

Through the night, he watched over you, flipping through the pages in your book as he added some things in an attempt to make it the best wedding you two could create, before drifting off into a light sleep.

Morning light bled in from the window as you started to wake, feeling trapped in your own body, you whined as Woobin stirred awake from the bright sunlight. Sitting up a little in his seat, he placed the book aside as he leaned forward to check on you, pressing his lips against your cheek, he kissed you good morning.

“Good morning, baby” He whispered as he made sure that you were breathing, his eyes moved up to the heart monitor as they were the same numbers as they were before he fell asleep.

The door slid open to reveal the doctor and two nurses, one on either side. “Good morning”

“Morning Doctor” Woobin bowed

“I came in to see how she was doing” He replied as Woobin nodded and stood up, gently slipping his hand from yours so they could have more room. Moving around you, they checked your reflexes as Woobin chewed on the side of his finger nervously, hoping they found something good.

A bright light shined in your eyes as you tried to move your head away from it, whining a little, the doctor and nurses stopped and looked at each other to see if they heard what the others did.

“No way” The nurse muttered under her breath as the doctor as they worked around you.

“Is she okay?” Woobin questioned as he watched the nurses and doctor move around you hastily.

“Her finger moved, Doctor” A nurse remarked as Woobin’s hopes heightened

“If it moves again let me know” He says while checking your vitals

“I-It moved again” The same nurse told the doctor

“Good girl” Woobin cheered from the sidelines.

“Sir, she opened her eyes” Another nurse remarked as they hustled around her. The doctor shined the light in your eyes as the response from your pupils was perfect.

“Let’s move her into another room” The doctor commanded as the nurses nodded and began packing you up for the move.

“D-Doctor where is she going?” Woobin grabbed his arm lightly, careful not to hurt the doctor.

“_____ is going to spend a few days in the hospital then she can go home with you” The doctor smiled and patted his shoulder again, “You two can get married once she is released”

“Thank you sir, thank you so much” Woobin bowed a full ninety degrees to show his appreciation

“She did most of it” The doctor smiled, “Good luck with your wedding, you two deserve each other.”

“Thank you sir” Woobin bowed again before he followed your gurney to your new room so that you could recover better.

Six months later, you stood at the end of a breathtaking aisle way, your father stood next to you as your arm was linked with his, lifting your head slowly, you saw the love of your life, Woobin standing up at the altar. The music played as you and your dad made it up to where Woobin was, your father passed you over to Woobin as you kissed his cheek and watched him sit next to your mom.

Woobin helped you up to the altar as the two of you held each others hands. Slipping on the rings on each other, the two of you echoed the “I do’s” before Woobin leaned in and kissed you deeply.

Relieved that you were here with him and that he could share this special moment with the one he loves, he pulled you close and let the kiss show all of his emotions before he pulled away. Smiling up at him, you saw his smile curl on his beautiful lips. Picking you up in his arms, he carried you up the aisle, ready to fulfill the other dreams that the two of you made together.
