There are two dimensions to this world. And asides from one main difference, the rest of the worlds are almost identical.
In one of the dimensions, there are people called the Herzlos who are said to have been "touched by darkness", turning them into creatures hungering for human flesh at night. However, this effect only shows up once the sun sets, so nobody can tell if the people around them are dangerous or not throughout the day. This only makes everyone suspicious of each other and throws the world into chaos.
The main reason humans have not yet gone extinct is because of an organization called the Praelia, which train individuals who wish to fight against the Herzlos. While anybody can join, only the best survive.
Though many joined their ranks in the beginning, they soon realized that it was not all glory after the majority of the new recruits were killed within the first three years. Their ranks constantly diminish in size while the ones who are "touched" continue to grow.
But the people were suddenly given new hope when an oracle predicted that people not from "this world" will arrive and chase away the darkness.
It has been almost three hundred years since then, and the Praelia are barely hanging on.
When will the light finally arrive?
And with the Herzlos suddenly seeming to gain intelligence, will the light be enough?
