How We Met

Final

“Don’t forget about tonight.” Luhan said to his girlfriend Hanmi, as he fiddled with his tie in front of the mirror.

Hanmi simply nodded, not uttering a single word.

Luhan turned to his girlfriend, worry evident in his face. “What’s the matter? Are you not feeling well?” He asked putting the back of his hand on Hanmi’s forehead. “You don’t seem to have a fever. Are you alright?”

Hanmi shook her head and sighed. “I’m just scared.” She admitted.

“Scared? Of what?” Luhan asked.

“Your parents.” Hanmi said, feeling a pang of guilt.

It was true, Hanmi was horrified meeting Luhan’s parents. Not because they were mean or evil but simply because they might disapprove of their relationship. Parents always want the best for their children but that thing that worried Hanmi was they might not think she was the best for Luhan. And she didn’t want that, she and Luhan have been dating for 4 years, the mere thought of them separating breaks her heart.

Luhan softened and sat on the bed, next to her. He took the girl’s hand and intertwined it with his. “Don’t be. They’ll love you.”

Hanmi’s head shot up, annoyed with Luhan. “How could you say that?” She accused. “For all we know they could hate me and make us break up!”

“Hey, don’t say that.” Luhan said calmly though she could hear sadness in his voice. Guilt quickly engulfs her. Embarrassed, Hanmi ducked her head down. “Hanmi, look at me.” The girl shook her head, not wanting to meet his eyes. “Please Hanmi.” He begged.

Sighing, Hanmi slowly lifter her head. Luhan noticed her eyes, shiny with tears and gently cupped her face, “Everything will be alright.” He assured. Hanmi slowly nodded her head. “I promise.” Luhan said, placing a chaste kiss on Hanmi’s lips.

“Are you ready?” Luhan asked as he turned his car’s engine off.

The couple arrived in front of a house, Luhan’s house, to be exact.  Hanmi slowly nodded her head, her anxiety slowly taking over. All sorts of thoughts ran through Hanmi’s mind. What if Luhan’s parents didn’t like her? What if they disapprove of their relationship? What will happen then? The feeling of someone tugging her hand brought her back to reality. She looked up and saw Luhan softly gazing at her. “Don’t worry. Everything will be okay.” He assured, softly gazing at her.

She smiled, ‘I don’t what I’ll do without you.’

Smiling softly to herself, she intertwined her fingers in Luhan’s. A feat that made Luhan’s heart race. Luhan loved Hanmi and he was sure she felt the same way. It’s time. Luhan thought.

“Let’s go.”

“I told you there was nothing to worry about.” Luhan teased as they made their way to the dining room.

Hamni covered her now red face with her hands. “Shut up.”

Luhan chuckled at her actions. He took her hand and placed a kiss on top of it. “You charmed them. Did you know that?”

Hanmi stared at her hand in Luhan’s. She couldn’t help but feel that they were made for each other. The missing piece of the jigsaw, she always thought. She lifted her eyes to meet Luhan’s. “Did you really think they liked me?”

“They were dazzled by you.”

“So,” Luhan’s mother said looking at them with twinkling eyes. “How did you guys meet?” She asked merrily taking a spoonful of rice.

Luhan chuckled at her mother’s childishness and gazed at Hanmi. Hanmi quickly caught his gaze and shared a knowing smile. “Well,” they started.

Shin Hanmi

“Thank you for all your hard work!” Said the old lady that owned the flower shop while handing Hanmi an envelope containing her hard owned money.

The young girl smiled and bowed at her. “You’re welcome!” She cheered and accepted the envelope gratefully.

The old lady laughed at Hanmi’s enthusiasm.

“What should I do now?” Hanmi wondered, looking at her money.

Hanmi passed by a bookstore when something caught her eye. ‘Saying Goodbye in Two Languages’ by Lena Park. Hanmi have always wanted to read that book but never got the chance to. Looking at the money on her hands she went inside the bookstore.

After buying the book, Hanmi looked for a place to read. A small coffee shop caught her eye. There’s only a few people inside. Hanmi smiled and went inside.

4 years ago. Seoul, South Korea.

Xi Luhan

Luhan’s soccer practice was cancelled because his coach had a date with a teacher in their school. Luhan rolled his eyes when he first heard about it but decided to give him a break. Their coach was a fat guy with a balding head; it was a miracle that he scored a date even though his date was none other than Ms. Lee the cat lady.

“Want to go with us?” Chanyeol, his teammate asked.

Luhan looked at him with curiosity. “Where?”

“There a new video game being released today. Me and some of the guys are going to buy it. It might take a while though, Chen said that there was already a huge line.” Chanyeol explained.

Luhan thought about it. It would be a good thing to bond with his teammates but when he realized how hot and long the line would be decided against it. “No thanks.”

“You sure, man?”

Luhan nodded, “Positive. Have fun though.”

Luhan lazily strolled the streets of Seoul for anything that would catch his eye when he passed by a coffee shop. Seeing that there were only a few costumers, he decided to go inside.

When Luhan looked up, his eyes saw a girl holding a book in one hand and a cup of coffee on the other. Luhan couldn’t see the girl’s face properly since the girl’s head was down. Luhan craned his neck to catch a glimpse of the girl’s face when the girl’s head suddenly shot up, Luhan felt his heart beating irregularly in his chest. He froze in his tracks. She’s gorgeous. Luhan felt a blush rushing to his cheeks. Badump. Badump. Badump.

Distracted, Luhan didn’t notice the girl inching closer to him until it was too late. The girl had bumped into him, causing her drink to spill on his shirt. “Oh my goodness!” She shrieked. “I’m so sorry!” She apologized, bowing in front of him.

“It’s fine. It’s fine. Don’t worry, it was an accident.” Luhan assured.

The girl looked up. Her brown orbs looking straight at him. “Are you sure?”

Luhan was mesmerized and felt the heat rising to his cheeks. “Yes. It’s fine.” Luhan said.

The girl looked at him. Luhan noticed her stare and felt hot all over. Luhan never felt this way before. Not one of the girls he had dated before made him feel this different. “I’m really sorry though.” She said.

“It’s okay, you didn’t mean too. I’m Luhan by the way. Xi Luhan.” He said, extending his hand.

The girl stared at his hand and smiled. She took his hand. “Hanmi. Shin Hanmi. It’s nice to meet you.”

“And the rest is history.” Luhan finished. “It was love at first sight.”

Hanmi smiled and took Luhan’s hand. “We dated two months after that day.”

Mrs. Xi, Luhan’s mother looked at the couple with twinkling eyes. “What a sweet story. I wish our story was as sweet as that.” Luhan’s mother elbowed his handsome, Mr. Xi.

Mr. Xi groaned in response. Luhan chuckled at his parent’s behaviour.

Dinner ended with a bang. All the doubt Hanmi had of Luhan’s parents were gone.

“I need to tell you something before we leave.” Luhan said, in a serious voice.

Hanmi got nervous with Luhan’s sudden change. “What is it?” She asked.

Luhan slowly got down on one knee and took a small box from his jacket. "Oh my goodness!" His mother squealed in delight.

Hanmi cupped her face. She could feel the hot tears in her eyes.

"Shin Hanmi," He said. Hanmi could feel the tears stinging her eyes as she looked at him. "The moment I met you I knew you were the person I would share the rest of my life with, you’re my soul mate, my love, my other half, my best friend, my one and only. The first time I saw you, you were wearing the shirt of my favorite band and reading the book I always loved.”

He looked at her, his eyes, watery with tears. “The moment I laid my eyes on you, they played the song that was stuck in my head for weeks and I couldn't help but think that it was destiny and now I know it was. Looking back on everything, I couldn't help but be thankful that you spilled coffee on me though I wished I didn't wear my favorite shirt." Hanmi chuckled, tears falling from her eyes.

Luhan continued. "I love you Hanmi now, forever, and always. As cheesy as it might sound, you complete me. I promise to love you, to honor you, to treasure you for the rest of my life. Shin Hanmi, would you give me the honor of being the happiest guy in the world? Will you marry me?"

Hanmi choked on her tears. "Yes! Yes Luhan, I will marry you!"

Luhan got up and put the ring on her finger. He gazed at her, lovingly. "I love you."

"I love you too." Hanmi answered.

Luhan swooped her in his arms and kissed her lovingly.
