Encounter

Of Tomatoes and Carrots

Grumbling in dissatisfaction for the nth time that morning, the twenty-four year old continues to circle horribly underpaid job offers under the employment column of the daily paper. He’s mentally exhausted and stressed from having to worry constantly of finding a job since his arrival into the Big Apple--New York City--just a few days prior. In truth, the young man had never imagined that the move to America would be this frustrating. He opted for the plan that after jumping on a one way ticket airfare, the rest of his life would fall into place.

Oh how naive he was.

Fresh out of college, Bang Yongguk had ambitiously defied his family’s opposition of allowing him to move to the United States. They expected him to use the degree that he had worked so hard for to earn a white collared job in an office. But Yongguk had other plans. He always had. His happiness wasn’t to be found behind a desk in a cubicle, it was to be found in the states. All his life he loved the cultural diversity, excitement, and endless opportunities that America had to offer and simply wished that he could simply get a taste of it. Despite the fact that his current living circumstances weren’t great to say the least, he was happy. Happy that he went through with his dreams and is now currently enjoying a cup of black coffee on a Sunday morning right off from Central Park.

But then again, he was jobless and only had around a few hundred bucks left that wouldn’t be able to sustain him for long. Sighing in frustration, Yongguk couldn’t help but run his fingers through his hair in discontent and rub his face from the bittersweetness of his current state.

“Rough morning?”

“You wouldn’t believe it.” Yongguk responds half heartedly in his heavily accented English to the young male refilling his half empty cup. The boy only nods as he offers a sympathetic smile before heading over to another table and offering other customers a refill in coffee as well. Looking back at the poor list of job offers that he had circled, Yongguk twisted his lips in displeasure. None of these jobs were going to take him anywhere, especially not out of the cheap, battered motel  that he was residing at. He needed a job and he needed one soon if he ever plans in getting a real place to stay for the next couple of years. But with few options to turn to, the poor guy was out of luck. And so, Yongguk packed his belongings and headed out of the shop to make way towards the closest job offer located within the area.

Leaving with a backpack slung over his right shoulder with the newspaper in hand, Yongguk was not in the least prepared to collide with another body as he made his way out from the shop. With his naturally built frame, he only stumbled a few wobbly steps back; whereas the person he bumped into flew to the ground. Without much thought, Yongguk quickly offered a helping hand.

“Hey, sorry about that. Are you ok?” he asked with concern. “I honestly didn’t see you there.”

I maybe short but I’m not that short.” The young woman mumbled to herself in Korean. As she grabbed his hand, Yongguk couldn’t help but almost smile at the familiar language. Though it’s been only a few days since he’d last heard or spoke in his native tongue, it was still a nice surprise nonetheless hearing it unexpectedly of all places.

Yah, I said I was sorry.” He replied back in Korean with a friendly quirk of his lips. The young woman who was not expecting to him to reply--let alone even understand what she had said-- snapped her head up and stared in bewilderment at the man before her. With a tint of pink in her cheeks from embarrassment, she couldn’t help but choke out a quick apology.

Yet, ironically so it was Yongguk who was choking. Though he was surprised to have encountered his first Korean since his landing, he was even more surprised to have stumbled upon such a beautiful woman. She was without a doubt attractive. Her blonde hair was almost as strikingly reminiscence to his back during his days in high school. Eyes lined with precision and lips glossed with a sweet colored pink, Yongguk was enraptured at the beauty before him. Sure, he’s seen  his fair share of beautiful women before, yet nothing was as captivating as compared to the one before him.

“I didn’t realize you were Korean, I didn’t mean any harm.” She spoke genuinely, shameful of her brash attitude.

“Nah, it’s fine.” Yongguk drew out his words slowly as he finally took notice of the sinfully tempting body that the young woman possessed. His eyes raked along her frame slowly, appreciating every curve of her body in the short (not that he minded) black and white striped body con she donned. As his eyes traveled back up, he suddenly realised that he was checking out the girl too obviously; for the beauty in front of him now had an eyebrow arched with a teasing smile gracing her lips. "Uh...I'm Yongguk, Bang Yongguk." He quickly introduced trying to cover his stupidity.

With a hand covering her face as she emitted a l=light hearted laugh, Yongguk swore that his heart stopped. "The name's Lee Chaerin. " She said, offering the baffled man a smile that left him feeling weak in the knees. Oh, how his heart was reduced to nothing more than melted chocolate as he continued to stare at Chaerin like a child admiring his first crush. With a lack of response, the Chaerin took a step back and bid him a farewell as she turned to enter in the coffee shop. "It was nice meeting you Yongguk."

Watching her enter the coffee store, all thoughts of going in for the job offer no longer mattered. He was entranced, hooked, desperate, and left wanting more of the mysterious young woman. Thus, he quickly stumbled into the store doors right behind the girl, fumbling over his feet. "Hey! Let me to join you!" He declared with a goofy, gummy smile on his face.

After the fateful encounter of having coffee with Lee Chaerin, Yongguk had learned a lot about the young woman. She was relatively the same age as he was and lived in Korea for a couple of years during her childhood. The rest of her life was spent in France, Japan, and a great majority in New York City. Like himself, she had also left the comfort of her home and flew oceans away in pursuit of following her own dreams. But unlike Yongguk, her dreams were already coming true. She had an eye for fashion; after working as personal assistance for a small boutique in Manhattan, her connections later landed her a job at one of the biggest fashion labels within the city. Now, the young woman works as a secretary taking calls, phoning celebrities, and setting up high fashion events that were tighter to get into than her own pair of leather leggings.

Yet, what captivated Yongguk was her intelligence. The way she viewed the world and saw things in her own light were almost philosophical. In many ways, she was like him. Both are art appreciators who valued the blessings in life, loves children, has an obsession over rap music, sleek black attires, and fancy shoes.

Yep, right off the bat when Chaerin said she owned a pair of Timberlands and had a mixtape of underground music the guy was sold.

Now three years into their relationship, Yongguk would certainly say that his life finally fell into place. Weeks after meeting Chaerin, he worked a few odd jobs here and there until eventually months later, he landed an office job at some hotshot business corporation that he never heard of. But Chaerin insisted that it was too good of an offer to pass up. Like a love sick puppy, Yongguk listened and followed her commands blindly. And was he sure happy that he did because with money rolling in, the guy was finally able to relax a little and seek out apartments to move into. In spite of being able to financially support himself, his girlfriend offered her apartment instead and suggested the idea of taking their relationship a step further by living together. With no objections, Yongguk had happily brought his luggage over the next day and hugged his girlfriend tightly, expressing just how excited he was. In response, the girl only laughed whole heartedly at his sweet innocence and return his hug with equal vigor.

"Chae, I'm home." Yongguk announces as he kicks off his shoes, entering into the shared apartment. Though he doesn't get a response, what he does get is a delicious waft of chicken that's being cooked in the kitchen. Entering into his home, he sees his girl--yes his girl--cooking up lunch by the stove. It was endearing really, watching Chaerin looking so focused at the frying pan in front of her. She was standing in her black Hood by Air sweater (that was worn more like a dress due to her petite frame that Yongguk had found just adorable), not noticing how her boyfriend was admiring her legs from behind. Hunching slightly, he came forth and wrapped his arms around her waist pulling her close until they were chest to back. "Babe, I said I was home."

"I heard you the first time. Now, leave me be. Go freshen up, lunch will be ready soon." Chaerin says as she doesn't break her concentration from the chicken. Not even when Yongguk leans over her shoulder and sneaks a peck on her cheek.

"Nuh-uh, no way mister. The last time you pulled something like that, my fillet burned because you couldn't keep your hands to yourself." The woman states as she wiggles herself out of her lover's hold.

Yongguk only responds with a shout of laughter, "Not my fault you resist my manly charms."

"Bang Yong--!" Chaerin shouts at his cheesy words as she turns to him in attempt to give him a glare that'd have him running for the hills. Yet, what happens next is that the clever Yongguk closes in and kisses the words right out of . She was persistent at first, not giving into his flirtatious ways; yet soon enough, she relaxes and she indulges in her lover. Pulling back, Yongguk stares fondly at Chaerin.

"See? That wasn't so bad right?" he teases with smile that's all gums and teeth. Chaerin only huffs and turns back to her chicken. Though she doesn't admit it, her flushed face and avoiding eyes says it all. With no response, Yongguk only emits another round of laughter and heads on up to their bedroom to freshen up.

Changing out of his stiff business suit, Yongguk descends the stairs in sweat pants, a tee, and a snap back worn backwards (just the way he likes it).

"Smells great." He compliments as he slides into his seat at the table, accepting the plate of chicken salad that Chaerin hands him.

"How was work?" She asks casually before chewing on a piece of chicken .

"Fine." Yongguk responds as he steals one of Chaerin's cherry tomatoes.

"Hey!" she scolds him as she tries to slap his fork away from invading her meal. But alas, nothing can stop Bang Yongguk as he quickly shoves the tomato in his mouth. He laughs with a mouth full of salad as he watches in amusement at how frazzled his girlfriend can easily get. She responds with a glare that's meant no harm at all, before she quickly steals one of his carrots in retaliation.

"Yah!"

A fit of giggles soon escapes from Lee Chaerin, as Yongguk quickly comes towards her and throws the girl over his shoulder and drops her onto the couch. “You’ll pay for this Lee Chaerin!” He hollers in attempt to be scary as he arms go straight to her belly and tickles her without any second thoughts. As a result, the young girl squeals and squirms in delight trying to fight off her boyfriend’s tickling hands.

With lunch being long forgotten, the apartment is filled with sounds of sweet laughter as the couple spends the rest of the day enjoying each other’s company.

Chapter 1: that was so cute! you did well for your first time! my only comment of constructive criticism is to focus more on story development in the future, but for cute little fluffs like this that isn't really important :)
