Chapter 1

Petals in the Snow

My name? Oh Sehun. I live a relatively normal life. I go to university every day and come home to my family. I like someone a lot, but I could never expect him to share my feelings in return. Honestly, nothing exciting really happens in my life, nothing except one day every year when the city goes into panic.

Seoul is cold today, the wind is blowing harshly and the grass is covered in white, the newly blooming yellow daises a bright contrast. Time seems to not have a meaning as the snow silently falls, covering the ground with an icy blanket. I always loved the way things looked buried in white. The clock in the distance chimes 6:30. Only thirty minutes until…

“, I’m going to be late!” Sehun yelled, wanting to slap himself for waking up late. He had never been one that was on time, but today of all days he couldn’t afford to be late, or he shouldn’t be out on the streets after seven today. Everyone knew that this was the day every year that people were kidnapped from their homes. Last year was the most ever reported to go missing, a grand total of 300 people were taken right out of Seoul. No one knew where they went, or at least if they did, no one said anything about it. Sehun quickly got dressed and ran out of his house, wanting to get to the university building as fast as he could. He looked around, praying to some higher force that he would make it there. He swallowed thickly in the cold air, before looking back down at his watch, 6:45. “…” he mumbled again. It was nearly a twenty minute walk to the school, he’d have to run. And run he did, as quickly as possible. He thought he heard a car screech behind him, but he didn’t turn back nor stop running till he reached the school gates and entered the building. 6:55.

Sehun gasped in relief when he entered his classroom and all his friends were there. There were mumblings about a few students not turning up for class that day, and two girls in the back were crying. He felt his heart break for them, knowing well that they knew they had lost someone and that they were never going to see said person again. He counted himself lucky that he hadn’t lost anyone, or at least anyone he knew about.

“Now I know all of you are worried about everything that is going on, but we all have to try our best today as well. We can only hope for the best and continue on with our lives.” the teacher said as Sehun stared out the window. The snow was falling hard now, so hard that he couldn’t see more than a few feet away, wonderful to hide what was going on in the city that moment. He sighed and looked at the empty seat beside him, the one that was usually occupied by a lively girl with brown pigtails in her hair. He would miss seeing her every day. Sehun wrapped his jacket tightly around himself.

“Did you guys hear about the new kid?” Sehun’s friend Jongin said as he took his spot at the usual place at lunch. “They said he was taken right out of his home, his parents came in after they heard a big crash in his room and found his window broken and no site of the poor kid.”  Zitao another one of his friends, shook his head sadly.

“That’s so messed up man…” He said in his thickly accented Korean. “I didn’t know about these kidnappings when I came here from China, honestly I don’t think I would have transferred if I had.”

“I don’t blame you.” said a deep voice coming up from behind them. Sehun turned to see the awkwardly tall guy behind him.

“Chanyeol.” Jongin greeted with a slight nod of his head. Chanyeol was their senior by one year, but was their good friend and kept them in the loop about what was going on in the upper classes.

“Did you guys hear?” He started. “The entire senior class is in a panic.” This perked all of their interests.

    “Wait, why?” asked Zitao.

“Apparently Junmyeon-ssi hasn’t arrived at school today.” Sehun felt his heart sink as he heard the name. There was a small sob from besides him and he turned to look at a smaller boy with large round eyes crying quietly. He had seen the boy before a few times, but never enough to actually get to know his name.

“H-hey, are you alright?” Jongin asked, apparently seeing the distressed boy as well. The smaller looked up sadly and shook his head.

“N-no…” He whispered quietly. “Junmyeon hyung… he couldn’t have been, right?” He stared at Jongin, begging for some sort of reassurance that everything was alright, that his hyung was fine and was just hiding. Jongin looked down, not wanting to hurt the boy’s heart more than it was, but at the same time not wishing to lie to him.

    “What’s your name?” Jongin asked.

“K-Kyungsoo.” The other said. Sehun nodded slowly, the name sounding somewhat familiar.

“You’re close to Junmyeon-ssi then?” Jongin said, frowning when the other broke out into more tears and nodded.

“He is like a brother to me… He was there to comfort me when…when…” Jongin placed a hand on the boys back, trying to comfort him in any way he felt possible. “Two years ago, my father, mother, and sister were taken… Junmyeon hyung, he took me in and helped me as much as possible. He told me that he was going to go to the old woman’s next door and help her into the shelter before coming to school… he should be here!” Jongin pulled the sobbing boy into his arms and held him gently. Sehun looked down at his lap. That was Junmyeon for you, one of the most caring people you would ever meet, and the most popular kid in school. Sehun remembered meeting him more than once and he was always really kind. He didn’t know when exactly it was but he had developed feelings for the older boy and he didn’t even try to deny them.

“I-I’m sure he’s fine…” Sehun mumbled, more to himself than anyone else really. Jongin frowned at him.

“Sehun…” The younger quickly shook his head and got up, and ran, he didn’t care that teachers were yelling at him. He didn’t know exactly where he was going until he came to a door that led out onto the roof. Sehun hesitantly opened the door and walked outside, immediately pulling his jacket closer to his body as the cold air met him. He looked up at the sky, the snow still falling, but not nearly as hard as it was before. The tears spilled out of his eyes before he could even begin to try and stop them. His heart felt like it was shattering into a million pieces, and he could feel every piece shatter into a million more.

“IT’S NOT FAIR!” He screamed at the sky. “PEOPLE…PEOPLE SHOULDN’T HAVE TO LOSE EACH OTHER! NOT… not people we love and care about…” He felt a sob break out of his throat and he fell to his hands and knees, giving into his tears at last, letting them fall freely. He didn’t know how much time he had spent on the rooftop crying, but it had been long enough that his entire body was shaking and numb from the cold and his lips were blue and now chapped.  Slowly he stood, wiping the tears from his eyes and looked over the edge of the building to the rest of the campus. It was beautiful, the snow was covering the early spring flowers.

“H-hello?” Sehun’s eyes widened as he quickly turned around and saw another boy at the door that led back into the school. Though the other looked years younger than himself, and was much shorter, he wore a senior jacket. “I-I’m sorry but no one’s supposed to be up here right now… the door should have been locked.” The boy said in a painfully quiet voice.

“I’m sorry, I was just leaving…”  He said walking back to the door and glancing at the other. The boy had blonde hair and eyes that seemed to always look a bit lost.

“Sorry to bother you… but it’s my job to make sure people don’t come up here when they aren’t supposed to.” Sehun shook his head.

“It’s fine, I shouldn’t of came up here, I don’t know why I did in all honesty. Have a good day.” The other nodded and watched the taller walk away. Little did Sehun know, but the other boy had noticed as soon as he had went outside, he had heard the younger’s crying and let him have his moment before telling him. Little did Sehun know, that the boy he had the chance of meeting there, was Kim Junmyeon’s best friend.

The rest of the day went by in a haze for Sehun, he couldn’t seem to focus on anything except Junmyeon. He sighed in relief when his classes finally ended for the day. Maybe it was the fact that there were too many people out, but every year when class was let out, the kidnapping came to a close. Sehun frowned and watched the ground as he began his walk home, hoping that he would see his mother and father home with his younger brother safe and sound, ready to continue on with their lives.

The street was empty as he continued on his way home, eerily empty. It was 5:30 in the evening,  normally people would be off work and walking around with their daily lives. But it was all quiet. He nearly jumped out of his skin when his cellphone rang.

    “Y-yeobosayo?”

“Sehun!” The voice on the other line called out.

    “Ah! Omma! You startled me!”

“Sehun, listen to me, get off the streets, get home as fast as you can you understand?” Sehun blinked, totally confused, but didn’t argue as he picked up his pace.

    “Why, what’s wrong?”

“The kidnappings, they are still going on, no one will come out of their home and the kidnappers are taking advantage of it! Your father and I will be home as soon as possible with your brother.” Sehun’s eyes felt like saucers by the time he finished listening to his mother. He again ran as quickly as he could without slipping on the snowy ground.

He arrived at his house shortly after, panting breathlessly as he closed the door behind himself and leaned up against it. It had been locked and no one seemed to be home yet but Sehun couldn’t help but feel uneasy.

“O-omma?” He called out into the dark house. There was no response. Sehun couldn’t help but shiver in slight fright. “Okay, pull yourself together Oh Sehun, it’s fine, nothing is going to happen. Omma and Appa will be home soon and you’re going to have dinner and continue on with your life just like you always have.” Though he tried his best to try and make himself feel better, he stayed stone still by the door, trying to peer into the dark house. There was uneasiness in the air and he nearly jumped out of his skin when he heard a car door outside shut loudly. He glanced out the window and sighed in relief when he saw his father’s car, his family quickly hurrying to make their way to the door. But as he turned back around there was a man standing in front of him, a wicked smile on his face and Sehun screamed and struggled when the man grabbed him. His family had obviously heard the commotion inside the house.

“SEHUN!” His mother screamed, desperately trying to get the now jammed door open. Sehun felt a hand clamp over his mouth and a sickly sweet smell wafted into his nose. It made him dizzy and he immediately knew that it was chloroform. Sehun elbowed the man in the stomach, stumbling forward when he was let go of, grabbing onto anything he could to keep himself up, knocking over a lap in the process. He could still hear his mother’s cries outside, desperate to get to him.

“Oooh we’re a feisty one now are we?” The man said, his voice raspy from what sounded like too many years of smoking. “You should do real well in the game then!” Sehun shook his head, trying to clear it and focus on the man that was once again advancing towards him, cloth back in his hand. Everything afterwards was in a blur for him. Sehun fell to the ground trying to back away from the hand covering his mouth again, only barely conscious of the front door crashing to the ground as his father burst into the house, immediately rushing the man. But it was too late as Sehun felt his body lifted from the ground, glass shards flying past him as the man escaped with agility through the glass door. The last sight he remembered seeing that night was that of his mother falling to the ground, screaming and sobbing as he was tossed in the van, his world turning black.
