Final

Sky & Earth

It hasn’t been long ago when she discovered an unbelievable phenomenon. She – the wandering ghost – fell in love with a human. How? Well, love is an indescribable thing so I don’t know. But one thing’s for sure. This love is a forbidden love.

A boy with brown hair sat under a cherry blossom tree – adoring how the tree is now in its full blossom. His lips formed a small yet sweet smile, a smile enough to melt her heart. She’s just beside him, adoring his smile. She was always there, sitting beside him all the time. And even though he doesn’t see her – seeing him was enough for her.

And every day – she writes letters for him. Letters that will remain unread. But letting her feelings out was enough for her. Just seeing the boy who has her heart is enough for her, and even though they won’t really meet – all she wants is to be by his side forever.

And as usual, she follows him to school. She sees how girls ran over him, but the boy seems to be always looking blank – as if he’s searching for something all the time. He settles himself to one corner of the school’s canteen. She remembers that his friends have some projects to do today so he will be left alone today. Alone for the mere eyes of human but he always has company wherever he goes.

“Himchan sunbaenim...” A girl slowly approached him with a lunch box on her hands. She looks really pure and innocent. She’s exactly what a man desires as their girlfriend.

She places the lunchbox on his table before bowing a little. “I made this for you.”

He flashes a smile before pushing the lunch box back at her, “Thank you for the effort but my girlfriend might get jealous. But I would appreciate it if you will offer this well-made food to those who are hungry and needy.”

The girl smiled as she took the lunchbox to her arms. “I will. Thank you!” She bows several times before turning away from him. He once again leans his gaze towards the window, his eyes watching everything – just like how the ghost watches over him.

Tears fell from the ghost’s beautiful eyes, the fact that he has a girlfriend made her sad but all she wants for him is to be happy. And she knows that a ghost and a human cannot be happy together.

And as usual, he sat under the beautiful cherry blossom tree and the ghost is just beside him, now also adoring the beautiful tree in their sight. “I feel that I’m going to heaven soon.” She whispered, her hands reaching towards his face.

“Young man!” An old woman suddenly came running towards him. You can see the traces of youth on her and you can say that she was so beautiful back on her days. Himchan stood up immediately and bowed politely.

“Grandma, are you the caretaker of this house?”

“Yes I am and I saw a shoebox containing lots of letters beside this tree. They are all for you but the handwriting look like Joohee’s.”

The ghost blinked her eyes as she heard her name. She suddenly felt a bang in her body; her presence is slowly fading away. Just one blow from the wind and she’ll surely disappear – just like how the Little Mermaid became bubbles.

The old woman hurriedly gave Himchan the box before bidding goodbye. “Joohee’s?” His lips formed a smile as he sat down under the tree to read the letters. He felt the wind passed through his cheeks, and then the ghost was gone without him knowing.

He slowly opens the box revealing letters written in assorted coloured papers. He decided to read one of them and what surprised him is that the handwriting is indeed from Joohee – the girl he once loved.

Dear Himchan,

How are you today? Spring is coming soon! I learned it’s your favourite season, mine is winter though. Aigoo – I’m glad you got number 1 in your class. Please don’t starve yourself from now on okay? And please don’t smile too much towards girls! They might misunderstand. Tsk tsk.

From. SJH

Dear Himchan,

Would you believe me if I say I’m a ghost watching over you? Don’t worry! I’m not scary at all. Believe me. And and, the strawberry bracelet you are searching for is behind the picture of your mother in your room.  Clumsy guy.

From. SJH

Dear Himchan,

What a drastic change! You changed your blonde hair to brown hair. But don’t worry, you still look handsome. The cherry blossoms are blooming soon! I remember I read a quote about cherry blossoms and love before but I don’t remember. Truthfully, I don’t remember anything except for my name. Such a pitiful ghost don’t you think? Ehe.

From. SJH

Dear Himchan,

You have a girlfriend? That’s good then, I think? Let me meet her okay!  I still can’t remember that quote. Huhu, I promise to remember it soon! Don’t skip meals and sleep well okay?

From. SJH

Dear Himchan,

I think I’m going to heaven soon. It was fun being with you. I won’t forget you okay? I’ll make sure I’ll be reborn soon. I remember the quote! And I fell for you just like how the cherry blossoms fell from its branches. Kim Himchan, I love you!

 From. SJH

Tears fell from his eyes as he read the last letter. He immediately places the box of letters in his backpack. “Joohee…You are not leaving me. Without saying proper goodbyes.”

My sky......

A girl with blonde hair and pale skin who was lying on the hospital bed for six months due to a car accident was continued being checked on by the doctor named Yoo Ara also known as her best friend since birth.

The blonde girl slowly opened her eyes, her nose smelling a smell she doesn’t like at all. Hospital.  “Ara-yah.”

The doe eyed girl hurriedly attended to her bestfriend, her body shivering. “Unnie – you are awake.”

“Was I sleeping? For how long?”

“Six months.”

“That..long? But – ” Flashbacks from the time her soul was roaming around came into her mind, with tears suddenly falling from her eyes. All this time – she thought she’s dead but – she was still given a chance – a chance to love him with all her heart.

“Go rest unnie. I’m gonna call your family okay?”

“JOOHEE!” Himchan panted as he opened the room’s door, tears falling from his eyes as soon as he saw her awake. Joohee’s eyes widened with Himchan in front of her – shouting her name. Ara immediately leaves the two with a smile on her face.

“Himchan.. How do you know me?”

He slowly made his way towards her, eventually pulling her for a hug. “Don’t you remember? I’m the guy always beside you on the bus. Also the one who brought you to the hospital.”

“Oh, I remember you……. But you know, I’ve been watching you since I’ve been sleeping for six months.”

He lets out a chuckle, as he showed the letters he received. “I just knew and I panicked when you said you were going to heaven and I won’t let that happen.”

“I love you, Kim Himchan.”

“I have been saying I love you to you for six months and you’re actually the girlfriend I’m telling to everyone you know.”

Joohee blinked her eyes for a few times before laughing, “I am?”

“Yes and I love you forever, Song Joohee.”

His lips found its way on hers. Who would have thought that they were really bounded together? And she came back just right in time, now all of the cherry blossoms are in their full bloom. Just like their love.

Two years had passed, Himchan and Joohee are still happily inlove together. He was just like the earth, strong and unstoppable while she was like the sky, calm and beautiful. The earth can never get away from the sky and so does the sky. Things meant to be are really meant to be.

The blonde girl sat down in an empty chair in one of the cafes she loved. A beautiful strawberry bracelet was lying on her right wrist, she remembers it was the thing Himchan was searching for thoroughly when she was still roaming as a free soul.

“Joohee!” The familiar voice of the man he loves suddenly emerged out of nowhere. He immediately makes his way to the blonde who was already smiling happily.

“Himchan-ah.”

He gives her a small kiss on the cheek before sitting right across her, “Did you wait for long?”

She shakes her head softly as she reached for her coffee. “Not really. Don’t worry.”

His hands reached to the pockets of his coat, slowly taking out a box. He opens it and shows it to Joohee. Inside was two rings, with the mere sight of it – Joohee began to tear up. “Song Joohee – Thank you for falling for me like how the cherry blossoms fell from its branches. Thank you for opening your eyes again to be with me. You may be imperfect but for me, you are the most perfect girl I have seen in my life. Can you please continue loving me? Will you marry me?”

“Thank you for waiting for me. I will never stop loving you and being your wife sounds like a good idea.”

Fairy tales do exist, and for Joohee – being with him is indeed Happily Ever After. And calling her as his wife is the most beautiful thing he had heard.
