Chapter 1

the laws of love.
April 6th marked the first time Oh Sehun overslept.

A screech pierced the otherwise tranquil morning as he scrambled down the stairs, pants half on and toothpaste residue left on the corner of his lips. A quick glance at the clock reminded him that he had two minutes to run a fifteen minute walk from his house to his class before his teacher scolded him in front of everyone.

Deciding to opt for an empty stomach over a day of embarrassment, he scurried past the kitchen and out towards the front door. "Bye mom. Gotta run!" He announced while haphazardly running his fingers through his tresses to try to flatten his bed hair. His tie was still crooked and his uniform jacket was only half way buttoned but those were things to worry about later. Running out before his mother could scold, he hauled his slender figure through the morning breeze as fast his legs could carry him.

It took him a full eight minutes to step onto campus grounds. Eight minutes late to one of the strictest teacher's class on campus. Sehun whimpered pathetically to himself as he bounded up the stairs, arms already hurting in thought of the punishment he'd surely be subjected to. He almost had half the mind to turn back and pretend he'd fallen ill for the day as he dawdled by the classroom door. Of course, everyone knew that Oh Sehun was the worst liar on the planet so he pushed away such thoughts and entered with a dejected sigh.

As opposed to a harsh scolding, the boy found himself greeted by the chatter of his classmates and a, "Sehun hurry up!" by a voice belonging to none other than his friend Luhan. No teacher in sight, it seemed as though he'd been truly blessed by a miracle as he collapsed into his chair, attempting to find his breath.

"Where's the teacher? He's never late." Sehun questioned once he'd manage to replenish the oxygen in his lungs.

"I hear we got a new transfer student. He's probably bringing him over right now." The blonde haired boy chirped with a slight shrug of his shoulders. Sehun merely nodded at the explanation, thankful for whatever the reason was. With the spare time, he decided to quickly fix his uniform before pulling out his textbooks to make it appear that he'd been there the entire time. It was then that he finally noticed a single white envelope caught between his literature and math book, probably shoved into his book bag by his mother in the morning. "What's this?" He muttered to himself.

There was no information on who sent it on the front of the envelope. He hadn't exactly been expecting anything either. Nonetheless, he carefully pried open the seal before pulling out the pieces of notebook paper from within.

'Mr. Oh Sehun.

How is my high school self? I am writing to you from ten years into the future. There's something that I would like to ask you to do for me. I have a lot of regrets I hold in my heart and I am hoping that by writing to you, you can make something happen.

Of course, knowing myself, I'll provide you with some things that will happen to you in your time so that you can believe my words.

April 6th - Morning
You will have forgotten to set your alarm and overslept for the first time.

A new transfer student will join your class today. His name is Kim Jongin.'

At this point, Sehun let out a scoff as he shoved the rest of the pages into his desk. 'What a lame prank.' He thought to himself, deciding to waste the rest of the time watching his friends Chanyeol and Suho banter over last night's soccer game.

Another seven minutes went by before their teacher finally made his entrance. Entering right behind was a boy with full lips, tired eyes, but a pretty face. Sehun couldn't help but admire the other despite being a boy himself. A quick introduction from the teacher informed the rest that the new student joining their class was Kim Jongin.

That was all that was needed for Sehun to gape his mouth rather unattractively as a surprised exclaim escaped his lips, garnering the entire attention of the class. Immediately the boy flushed red as he dipped his head in apology to their teacher. More frazzled than embarrassed though, his fingers searched blindly for the letter once more to confirm it. 'No way. It's for real?' Turning the letter to the second page, Sehun read the next line in his head.

'He will be assigned to sit next to you.'

"Perfect. That's Oh Sehun. Go sit next to him." His teacher dismissed as the new face approached the empty desk next to Sehun.

Wasn't it too early to be having a complete mental collapse?

He spent the rest of class wondering what demon magic had found it's way into his hands and stealing sneak peeks at the boy who he couldn't tell was making his heart flutter from being from the letter or because he was, well, really hot.

At the sound of the bell, his friends habitually gravitated towards the back towards his desk as Luhan eagerly swung his arm around his shoulder. "Sehun-ah. Come home with us~ We're going to Kyungsoo's place for food." Never one to disappoint his friends, Sehun easily consented with a nod of his head and an eager smile. As he rose from his seat, his eyes glanced toward Jongin's fleeting figure and as anticipated, Luhan called out. "Ah, Jongin! You should come join us." It wasn't out of the blue for Luhan to be so friendly but Sehun's lack of surprise was truly the result of the letter.

'You invite Jongin to hang out but he refuses.
- Just this once though, don't invite him.'

Despite Jongin's modest refusal, Luhan's eagerness could not be beaten and so soon enough, Sehun found himself walking down the hallways with all of them in a group. He took another glance at the first reminder on his letter as he contemplated the liability of it all. What reason was there not to invite the new student? Everybody including Jongin himself seemed to be content with the way things were. Deciding to ignore it this once, Sehun tucked the letter back into his bag before immersing himself into the round of introduction.

The rest of the walk to Kyungsoo's parents convenience store was filled with laughter and jokes. By the time they had arrived, any doubts Sehun had stored into his heart had been tossed out. Jongin was obviously fitting in and having a good time. It was a good thing he hadn't stepped out to stop Luhan from asking him to join.

The group settled down onto the table outside of the shop as Kyungsoo brought out an array of ice cream. Kyungsoo handed them out per their request and Sehun ended up with the watermelon flavored once despite his preference for the vanilla cream one, having purposefully not chosen it knowing the other's wanted it as well. He'd just motioned to tear open the package when Jongin's low voice caught his attention. "I'll trade you!" A crooked smile on his lips and arm reached out with the vanilla cream ice cream in hand, that was the first moment Sehun's heart rapidly fluttered in the other's presence.

"A-Ah sure." Sehun agreed as he handed over his. He couldn't help but wonder if the other had noticed that he'd wanted that specific one. It was probably a coincidence though and so the boy dismissed it with a content smile before digging into his treat.

They all spent another half hour talking amongst themselves before dispersing for the day. As they all waved good-bye to one another though, none of them had anticipated that for two weeks, Jongin did not come to school.

Those entire two weeks, Sehun could not help but wonder, could it have been because he disregarded the warning not to invite him?
