Rubato
Description
Even the loveliest melodies will one day fade to silence.
Foreword
The world is never quiet, even its silence eternally resounds with the same notes, in vibrations which escape our ears. As for those that we perceive, they carry sounds to us, occasionally a chord, never a melody.
- Albert Camus

.author's note
This story is based on the musical term tempo rubato, which refers to rhythmic freedom in a performance marked by slight accelerations and decelerations. In Italian, tempo rubato literally translates to "in robbed time".
Although this story was previously published under the same title, I was dissatisfied with the cast and felt Minho and Taemin were better suited for their respective roles. After extensive revision and the insertion of musical references, I am much happier with the results. The piano pieces that Minho plays in the story are ones that I have performed myself and as I was writing this story, I realized how empty my life has been since I abandoned my instrument. Like Albert Camus says, the quotidian sounds that we perceive can never be music, no matter how hard we listen.
Lastly, this one-shot is dedicated to the amazingly patient lubiks-cube.
