Narcissus

Description

He chased her to the end of time, but in every life, she slipped through his grasp like moonlight.

Foreword

Only the enlightened can recall their former lives; for the rest of us the memories of past existences are but glints of light, twinges of longing, passing shadows, disturbingly familiar, that are gone before they can be grasped.

- Peter Matthiessen

.author's note

This story was inspired by the Legend of Narcissus  as well as this Tumblr post, which compelled me to rise to the challenge. Look at me, being all hipster, shipping idols with themselves.

Chapter 1: Whoa. Like, WHOA. The ending was incredible. I loved how you kept it short, yet deep and tragic. This is incredible.

Chapter 1: This was short, yet deeply moving. As trixyBee said, it's interesting to see how you transformed the heartless Narcissus of mythology into a sympathetic figure. Even though he did wrong and deserved punishment, his later suffering seemed disproportionate and therefore tragic.

Chapter 1: This story was gorgeous! Short and not sweet... Haunting, a little depressing, very thoughtful. Congrats on winning the comp!

When I first read this, I was quite annoyed because I've had a similar idea since six years ago, and I couldn't post it because of so many similar stories, and yours is so wonderfully written! Who can even top this?

It's so simply narrated, but is very picturesquely desperate and just... ;~; How you gave a relatability with such an impossibly annoying mythical figure is astounding.
